I was 7 years old and I played the shit out of that game with a joystick lol. I had a Shrek themed car and everything. I just got iRacing and it feels so familiar.

@modernwarfare21999 Dirt to Daytona was awesome and I love the grass-roots aspect, but MAN, 43 online drivers on free servers, realistic physics, custom paint booth where you could use Adobe Photoshop, countless free mods including cars, trucks, rules, tracks of every year, era and sponsor on asphalt, concrete, dirt, where you can relive favorite races from racing Richard Petty and Darrell Waltrip in 1975, there was no end. You could take restrictor plates off, tweak setups and gear ratios, tie-rods, caster/camber, track bar...You could use pace laps to warm your tires, especially for cooler track surfaces. The wind direction and heat mattered and affected tire pressure and how much grill tape you could use. The blowovers were so realistic that you felt helpless just by spinning in the wrong angle. It was the ultimate simulation.
Imo EA won the arcade/simcade battle but Papyrus won the sim battle. Sure, EA got a pretty much exclusive contract, but I feel like a lot of people forget that iRacing is literally NR2003. As in, developed directly from it, and until surprisingly recently used an upgraded version of the exact same engine. Almost all of the iRacing starting developers were from Papyrus, so there's basically a direct through-line. And considering iRacing runs the official NASCAR sponsored eRacing league, I'd say that's pretty damn impressive.

Oh my god. Words CANNOT describe how much I LOVE Thunder 2004. I was like 2 when the game first came out, but I didn’t start playing it until I was around 5 years old. The game honestly shaped my love for both racing games and racing in general
NASCAR 98, 99 and 2000 are still my favorites. I was always terrible at them and constantly worked to get better. Eventually I was able to win the season championship at 100% length. I basically spent two summer vacations doing it.
My mom was a nascar fan at her childhood. They always occupied the arcades seats and form a line behind them. My mom always pretended to be Jeff Gordon and her friend dale Earnhardt and played together to see who won first. At 2013 the arcades was still there and I also loved and went there almost everyday. But when it's my first ever nascar game I played it's nr2003.
I got a PS2 and Thunder 02 for Christmas one year and i swear to god my eyes were almost bleeding when I finally turned it off that night. Also, no Chase for the Cup or Total Team Control? I loved those games.

I love it! I just got through editing NASCAR 07, so I'm hoping a week or so and it'll be out. Also I loved NASCAR 06 as a kid too... that being said you might not be happy with the review lol
tried out 22 nascar games last year... it was exciting jorney. But still I didn't find an ideal one. With good AI, convinient control on gamepad, feeling of realism, good representation, good damage model (all games for last 8 years are not ok), w/o tech issues os stupid bugs, and with rewind feature. Heat 2002 and Dirt to daytona is my personal top to enjoy. But these are really old games.
So, the reason Dirt to Daytona has good dirt racing was because Monster Games were the developers of Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, which focused on local demolition dirt races. In fact, almost all the tracks used in Eve of Destruction would be used in Dirt to Daytona.
The Amiga/Atari ST version of Days of Thunder is a completely different game to the NES one. And there was also an alternate cancelled version of Days of Thunder for the NES that was leaked recently!

I think it sucks when games are licensed to one company and another can’t have a shot to make a game that may be better.. EA has had a strangle hold on madden for years and Ive always wondered what 2k could do with the game.. what would 2k do for nascar?

Oh dude absolutely, the 29 car and Shadow the Hedgehog are about as "early 2000s edge" as you can get. "I am all of me" would be pretty aggressive for a song choice as far as NASCAR goes, but they did a lot of that around that time.

Both NASCAR 2005 and Shadow have a morality system, except NASCAR 05's actually works and influences how other racers treat you on track. Shadow's on the other hand doesn't do jack.
Thunder 2004 will always be the pinnacle of NASCAR Gaming. The in depth career mode, The driving model was fantastic, The Ally and Rival system was awesome, and the incredible soundtrack. Nothing will ever top it.
As a European the only Nascar game I came across was the Nascar 07 for the Ps2 and I bought it for 6 euros. I stuck in my ps2 and the rest is history. Such a great game.
Despite NASCAR 2001 not being the best game, I always loved the song “Give” by Widespread Panic. It was always fun to listen to while trying to get to the front of the pack.
nascar thunder 04 beats out the other, only because i actually forgot about the other one... thunder 04 was like, double S tier. and it really set a standard not just for nascar games, but racing games in general, as noone else was doing career modes so indepth until then (except for maybe Gran Turismo), but so much came right around this game and after, and a lot of it focused so much on immsersive career rpg esque elements. 04 thunder really defined a whole generation of games.
I had no clue that was in a Tony Hawk game at all actually 😂 That section of the video uses a lot of music from Thunder 2004... and yeah they're all goated songs 🤣

I used to play nascar total team control on my ps2,. Its my favorite nascar game, way better then the heat series,,(the current heat series, didnt know about the original heat before this video)
Papyrus Nascar games have no rivals, trust me. Also they create Grand Prix Legends, the very first masterpiece in 3d racing simulation. This game was just on another level.
Nascar Racing 1994 from Papyrus is the cornerstone of the genre. The Godfather of the nascar games that every next games tries to emulate. The game itself deserves more respect from the gamers. It was ten years ahead from his time. The only 2 issues are that it only runs under DOS (you can use dosbox to emulate) and it has 320x240 pixel resolution because graphics cards didn't exist in those years. But still nowadays is fully playable
My first experience with Oval racing was the 1st 3d indycar game, Indy 500. Then it was a floppy disk with a demo of Nascar Racing by Papyrus. Then I bought the full Nascar game, still better than most modern Nascar games. Played many others 2003 is my favourite and still the Best Nascar game.

Honestly never played a nascar game but thats kinda sad that Monster and Papyrus had to stop. It seems like they did extremely well and should have been given some type of work . Papyrus final game getting all 90+ rscores in reviews.
I have no qualms with any of your ratings for the games, as quite a few of these games are pretty bad, and get rated accordingly. However, the sheer amount of red in that first column at 3:28 tells me you either are (a) quite young, or (b) didn't get into NASCAR until about 15 years ago. In any case, the games you are missing, which includes almost all of the Papyrus/Sierra computer games, would show you the evolution and excellence of sim racing from it's much humbler beginnings and how console games have paled in comparison. At least you've been able to experience (and I would say properly rate) NR2003, the final predecessor to what became iRacing.
Yeah you pretty much called it lol. I was born in 1997 so I wasn't even a cognitive person until like 2001, and all we had for the longest time was a PS1 and a PS2. I do think I'll be going through those older games though, felt bad not being able to talk about stuff like NASCAR 98, NASCAR Rumble and the old Papyrus stuff
Most NASCAR games play it pretty realistic with that kind of thing, and since NASCAR requires equal weight and body shape, you cant upgrade those kinds of things in most games. Maybe NASCAR Unleashed or NASCAR Rumble, but I've never played either so I can't really say.

Nascar 98 had cheats before heat. It had paintball mode where you could shoot a paintball that would spin out cars with triangle. I had a lot of good times playing that game with friends.
NR2003 is awesome. The only thing it lacks is good dirt racing. Which, considering that dirt racing was entirely absent from NASCAR at the time I can’t blame them
I remember me and my cousin would play Nascar thunder 03 and do the beach Daytona track and race backwards and wreck everyone until they all went off the track lol good times. Also like u said the rivals and friends in that game were so realistic, NH5 should take a page out of there book
NASCAR unleashed I played it it’s not bad it’s just weird for a nascar game nascar tracks turned into weird off road tracks but definitely my favorite nascar game is inside line lot of paint schemes but don’t cause a wreck at Bristol cause it will clog the whole field up
@@the54car Not at all, it's unlike anything else that bears the name "Heat". I would say it's a different take on a sim/sim physics than Papyrus stuff, but isn't a console arcade game like most of the stuff from that era. Plus the graphics were excellent for it's time!

@@the54car Nice! If you fire up Heat PC make sure you use 'simulation' mode and not 'arcade' and it's a blast to play! (Also it has blowovers before Papyrus did it!)
No nascar game has come close to NR4 or NR2003. But it's not exactly fair to compare a PC exclusive to console casual games. Playing the console games feels like just playing something to relax and not having to try hard in. NR2003 feels like im getting strapped in and about to race for my life. If you want the closest experience to real life racing without getting iracing. Get NR2003 or acquire it from a friend (if you know what i mean). But if you are looking for a fun console experience, Dirt to Daytona was the best ive played so far. I've played this and NR4 on and off since 2002. And with modding support, it never dies.
You're judging some of the old games based on if the game tells you how to play. Back then, you were supposed to read the manual. It was easier to stick that kind of info in a manual than in the game until the 1990's, particularly looking at a system like the NES. For example, if you track down the manual for the NES Bill Elliot's NASCAR challenge it will tell you how the setups work. Honestly, reading the manual for this game you can see there was a lot of thought put into the system. It's on you if you haven't read the manual for a game or don't know that's how games worked back then.
Insofar as I know, NR2003 is the only game where actual NASCAR drivers used it to make a strategy they used in a real race. Granted, this was with the BR mods installed... but still, pretty impressive.
@@jonraybon8582 The Talladega BR track was only used because there was more grip on the outside line compared to the vanilla track. But that only changed the grip of the track, not the physics of the game. It also made the developers angry because the commentators called the game Talladega BR, instead of NR 2003 so they made it so Brian couldnt mod tracks for the game anymore. It was a big old mess.

I played 2005 Chase for the Cup and then Dirt to Daytona and they were both epic. Then i played EA's NASCAR 08 and dont remember anything from it lol did it even have trucks? When i played NASCAR 15 i was SO disappointed

Most of the same devs worked on iRacing. It even uses the same (albeit heavily Thesus'd) game engine as NR2003 and reuses a lot of the audio.
I mean NR2003 is made by the same company so 😗
rFactor 1 and 2 are the only others besides iRacing that come even close these days.

The N64 versions are VASTLY different than their PS1 counterparts (especially in 2000).

nascar thunder 04 beats out the other, only because i actually forgot about the other one... thunder 04 was like, double S tier. and it really set a standard not just for nascar games, but racing games in general, as noone else was doing career modes so indepth until then (except for maybe Gran Turismo), but so much came right around this game and after, and a lot of it focused so much on immsersive career rpg esque elements. 04 thunder really defined a whole generation of games.
NASCAR 98, NASCAR RACING PC & PS1, NASCAR DIRT TO DAYTONA, and Nascar Thunder 2002 to 2004 are still GOATED NASCAR games.

Papyrus Nascar games have no rivals, trust me. Also they create Grand Prix Legends, the very first masterpiece in 3d racing simulation. This game was just on another level.
Bill Elliots NASCAR Challenge was the first racing game on console I ever played 😅
Nascar Racing 1994 from Papyrus is the cornerstone of the genre. The Godfather of the nascar games that every next games tries to emulate. The game itself deserves more respect from the gamers. It was ten years ahead from his time. The only 2 issues are that it only runs under DOS (you can use dosbox to emulate) and it has 320x240 pixel resolution because graphics cards didn't exist in those years. But still nowadays is fully playable

Shows intro of Nascar 98.... Doesn't review it... It was the one i first played and damn it's fun, and the intro is lit!
My first experience with Oval racing was the 1st 3d indycar game, Indy 500. Then it was a floppy disk with a demo of Nascar Racing by Papyrus. Then I bought the full Nascar game, still better than most modern Nascar games. Played many others 2003 is my favourite and still the Best Nascar game.
NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup has the same place in my heart that 2004 does for you.

Probably the one I remember spending the most time with was Nascar Thunder 2003. Its a shame they don't make them like they use to.
Honestly never played a nascar game but thats kinda sad that Monster and Papyrus had to stop. It seems like they did extremely well and should have been given some type of work . Papyrus final game getting all 90+ rscores in reviews.

Heat 2002 also came out on the Xbox, and apparently had System Link support, up to *32* players!
I have no qualms with any of your ratings for the games, as quite a few of these games are pretty bad, and get rated accordingly. However, the sheer amount of red in that first column at 3:28 tells me you either are (a) quite young, or (b) didn't get into NASCAR until about 15 years ago. In any case, the games you are missing, which includes almost all of the Papyrus/Sierra computer games, would show you the evolution and excellence of sim racing from it's much humbler beginnings and how console games have paled in comparison. At least you've been able to experience (and I would say properly rate) NR2003, the final predecessor to what became iRacing.
Yeah you pretty much called it lol. I was born in 1997 so I wasn't even a cognitive person until like 2001, and all we had for the longest time was a PS1 and a PS2.
I do think I'll be going through those older games though, felt bad not being able to talk about stuff like NASCAR 98, NASCAR Rumble and the old Papyrus stuff

I’m curious: Any NASCAR games that had Weight Reduction Upgrades or Bodykits?
Most NASCAR games play it pretty realistic with that kind of thing, and since NASCAR requires equal weight and body shape, you cant upgrade those kinds of things in most games.
Maybe NASCAR Unleashed or NASCAR Rumble, but I've never played either so I can't really say.

Nascar 98 had cheats before heat. It had paintball mode where you could shoot a paintball that would spin out cars with triangle. I had a lot of good times playing that game with friends.

The Xbox version of NASCAR heat 2002 had a full 43 car field. The PS2 version didn't.
NR2003 is awesome. The only thing it lacks is good dirt racing. Which, considering that dirt racing was entirely absent from NASCAR at the time I can’t blame them
If just having NASCAR in it counted for this list Rocket League would be #1.
I remember me and my cousin would play Nascar thunder 03 and do the beach Daytona track and race backwards and wreck everyone until they all went off the track lol good times. Also like u said the rivals and friends in that game were so realistic, NH5 should take a page out of there book

NASCAR unleashed I played it it’s not bad it’s just weird for a nascar game nascar tracks turned into weird off road tracks but definitely my favorite nascar game is inside line lot of paint schemes but don’t cause a wreck at Bristol cause it will clog the whole field up

@@the54car Not at all, it's unlike anything else that bears the name "Heat". I would say it's a different take on a sim/sim physics than Papyrus stuff, but isn't a console arcade game like most of the stuff from that era. Plus the graphics were excellent for it's time!

@@the54car Nice! If you fire up Heat PC make sure you use 'simulation' mode and not 'arcade' and it's a blast to play! (Also it has blowovers before Papyrus did it!)
No nascar game has come close to NR4 or NR2003.
But it's not exactly fair to compare a PC exclusive to console casual games.
Playing the console games feels like just playing something to relax and not having to try hard in.
NR2003 feels like im getting strapped in and about to race for my life. If you want the closest experience to real life racing without getting iracing. Get NR2003 or acquire it from a friend (if you know what i mean). But if you are looking for a fun console experience, Dirt to Daytona was the best ive played so far.
I've played this and NR4 on and off since 2002. And with modding support, it never dies.
Pretty sure the Xbox version of heat 02 had full fields. I know it had a 32 player system link mode

This isn't every single nascar game. There are at least 2 or 3 we had on our windows 95 that aren't on here
You're judging some of the old games based on if the game tells you how to play. Back then, you were supposed to read the manual. It was easier to stick that kind of info in a manual than in the game until the 1990's, particularly looking at a system like the NES.
For example, if you track down the manual for the NES Bill Elliot's NASCAR challenge it will tell you how the setups work. Honestly, reading the manual for this game you can see there was a lot of thought put into the system.
It's on you if you haven't read the manual for a game or don't know that's how games worked back then.

The nascar racing games were the most realistic as far as simulations go. It's 2022 and I still play NR 2003.
Insofar as I know, NR2003 is the only game where actual NASCAR drivers used it to make a strategy they used in a real race. Granted, this was with the BR mods installed... but still, pretty impressive.
@@jonraybon8582 The Talladega BR track was only used because there was more grip on the outside line compared to the vanilla track. But that only changed the grip of the track, not the physics of the game. It also made the developers angry because the commentators called the game Talladega BR, instead of NR 2003 so they made it so Brian couldnt mod tracks for the game anymore. It was a big old mess.

I played 2005 Chase for the Cup and then Dirt to Daytona and they were both epic. Then i played EA's NASCAR 08 and dont remember anything from it lol did it even have trucks? When i played NASCAR 15 i was SO disappointed
