    Hello! New to your channel and fairly new to sewing...not counting the doll clothes I made with my grandmother when I was a child...just want to say that I really enjoy your fabric/pattern hauls! Like another one of our subscribers, I have reservation about buying fabric online without touching it. I’ve ordered from fabric mart before and had a few surprises once the package arrived. I blame it on my lack of knowledge but I’m slowly learning! Watching your fabric hauls/ opinions on fabrics has helped me quite a bit in deciphering which fabric would work for which project. I wanted to also thank you for that. You’re a joy to watch!

    Hi Viv! I love hearing about your week! It really helps me feel happy like visiting a friend during this divorce I’m going thru. You always make my day when I get to watch your video, about you good makes and bad! Lol we all have those don’t we?! Don’t know why some patterns don’t go together and some don’t look good when you have it made! Keep them rolling’ ❤️

    First off - you're such an inspiration! I'm serious. I've started sewing for myself again and I love the way my wardrobe is growing. Thank you for the pattern reviews and the ideas about matching fabrics to patterns. My fabric stash is shrinking and my pattern stash is growing! Woo-hoo!
    Secondly - thanks for talking about struggles. It's just a pain to have to push thru something that's not working. I made a very cute dress recently and put pockets in it - then tore them completely out because Simplicity was right, it was better without them. One day I'll learn. . .
    It's been 80-85 degrees here along the gulf coast and I can't believe it's only March. I don't know what I'd do without all the sunshine. After years of the dreary winters of the midwest, I'm in heaven. I'm sending some your way!

      Jen!! This is so sweet, thank you!💕I love hearing that you’re sewing up a storm. That is fabulous. Now I’m inspired right back by you!! You’re so generous to tell me this. I’ve been feeling rather low about my troublesome sewing and wondering when it’s going to “get fun” again. Well, you are infusing me with some much needed optimism! Can’t thank you enough.👍👏👏

    Hi, Vivmom. You've given me the courage to order fabric online. It's so hard to buy fabric without touching it. I bought linen when Fabric Mart had it on sale. It's lovely, and I'm making a dress with one of my choices. I like the stripe fabric you have.

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yay Norma!! I know, it feels like stepping off a cliff to order fabric without handling it. But it gets easier, and often it’s even better than I’ve anticipated. That’s always fun. Sometimes it’s worse, it happens, but then it’s just a challenge to use it creatively. Your linen dress is going to be gorgeous, I just know it.

  • @lizcole8018

    Hi Viv! I think your hair is lovely and your dress is too! I'm very conscious about my non-waistline but I like the tie styling very much. I will wait for the Kwik Sew sale and maybe treat myself, or may just order it today because you know, there's no such thing as too many patterns! I have gone mad recently with the half price Simplicity sale and another sewing company had all patterns half price for a few days. Well hello Vogue! 😍 It's lovely and sunny here in Rome (Italy) and what a difference it makes to one's wellbeing! Happy sewing! Liz

    Hey Viv, I made my maturity clothes, it was a Simplicity pattern, made several pieces out of chambray. Did some colour blocking with the matching stripe. I had a lot of fun making these clothes I even did some machine embroidery on the pockets. No one knew that I made them. I later sold them at a yard sale five years later! This was a good memory.

    So love it when I look and you have a new video up! 😀 Your hair looks great and that mauve is a beautiful color for you. Happy you’re getting some sunshine. It’s been hot and wet here in the south- already. 😟 makes me worry about how hot the summer will be. That’s bad for hurricanes. Thanks for popping in and sharing the wonderful patterns and fabric. Hi vivmom loving those fabrics. Sometimes when it goes wrong i wonder why I keep doing it and like you it goes On a hanger in the back of the wardrobe! But it's that super hobby which allows me to make anything I want (within reason of course!) in whatever fabric of colour. I just love it when that fabric gets delivered !!

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We keep going back, for good reason!! I’m not one to let a pattern beat me. I was trying all sorts of things with the Simplicity top, including chopping out most of the unneeded gussets that fanned out like flags over my hips. What a bad design!! Live and learn. That’s the beauty of sewing. (One of the beauties, there are so many more!😄)

    Hi Viv, you are like a breath of fresh air! and I love your hair.love the new look patterns you found, when I go to the Wal-Mart by me they never have any new patterns, I thought about asking one of the associates why, but didn't have time.

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda! I asked at Walmart one time about the deplorable state of the pattern drawers. The answer was less than encouraging. “oh, they get new patterns?” She asked ME! I explained that new patterns are released but I never see them at Walmart. Then she “remembered” that “some lady” comes in “every so often” to replenish the drawers. Uh, thanks. (For nothin!!😂)
      Thanks for your kind compliments.💕

      I screwed this poor dress up, Debi. I got all mixed up with fitting suggestions over at Pattern Review and I spooked and did all sorts of things to the pattern before sewing it that I regretted. I wish I had just sewn the darn thing, because I had to try and undo what I changed. The lesson for me is not to get spun out with advice, and just trust your instincts. (I know people mean well.) I’d really like to sew this dress again as drafted. It’s on my to do list.👍Thanks so much for your compliment!!💕

They are swaddling those babies in the womb, crazy. I loved my maternity clothing, so relaxed and comfortable, really cute tent dresses all except that red polka dot, what was I thinking. Your hair on my monitor looks like a honey blonde to me. Looks nice I think. I bought the same floral stretch knit last week. I liked it when you held it up, so think I will be happy with it too. So funny - I bought the striped twill on my previous order and have made some feather insert cushion covers for my deck furniture. It looks great I think. Now, I am going to be super interested to see what you make with it.

    Love the mauve velvet fabric viv that would look great in a wrap dress, love the stipe fabric as well they would make a great pair of trousers with the stripes running down for summer, I actually got time to make myself two pair of trousers the vintage looking ones wide leg with the buttons going up the front pockets, i made it up in a green cotton first and then a navy fabric with tiny cream spots on all I need now is a good rock n roll venue to go and dance the night away,we’ve just had the wind and rain that’s the tail end of some hurricane from some where not sure where, your hair looks very nice viv let’s face it Hairdresser’s don’t always get it right when it comes to hair colour or cuts come to that, it helps when they listen and take on board what your saying keep sewing and sharing viv xx

    LOL, pregnancy and the days when we were celebrated because we had big bellies. NL6603 is a maternity style dress but whose judging? It looks so comfortable.
    We had sunshine and warmth yesterday but cloudy and snow today. Spring is always a weather roller coaster, get spirits up then following with more winter weather. You'd think we would adjust knowing it's the same every year but I still get pulled in by the occasional fabulous weather.

    • @vivmomsews4962

      Totally! Roller coaster for sure. This morning my husband biked into DC to work; it was 29 degrees when he left home, and sunny and warm by midday. (He had a pleasant ride home.) I’m an old sun fanatic and have the wrinkles to prove it! Ahhhh maternity wear...those were the days.😄👍

    Love the fabric and fresh new warmer weather patterns! Love your dress! I feel your pain! Remember those pants with the very high waist? I was going to take your advice and fold down. Then I looked at the pants...pockets. The opening is part of the waistband at the top. Bummer. I decided I'd just make sure they stayed up, snug waist, because I do want to be able to put my hands in my pockets. LOL! After taking up the sides 4 times ... that 4 times each side! We're talking inches! It doesn't make sense! I measured, went by the pattern. Even measured the pattern pieces to make sure the hips fit. Oh, and (LOL) the fabric is black with some body and stretch. Perfect for pants! The first time I tried them on I pulled up in the back and heard that familiar sound of threads popping. The stretch is up and down, not side to side. Not to be outdone, I realized I did not use a stretch stitch. So back to the machine, for the important parts! LOL! I will hem them now and I WILL wear them. Please Lord, just don't let anybody see the inside! Thanks Viv, love your video's! I AM going to make a top next. Got my fingers crossed.

    Maternity wear styles have changed a lot. When I was growing our family ‘85-‘91, pregnancy was hidden under very tented styles. Now my daughters are starting families and everyone shows off the bump. Empire waists no longer scream maternity wear!

  • @amyshimonkevitz4803
    @amyshimonkevitz4803 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Viv -- I like the dress you are wearing in this post, especially the neckline. The velvety pink fabric is pretty, and even if it doesn't have a lot of stretch, if it is a softer hand, it might make a nice dress, but I'm thinking a short spring-y jacket, not quite a bolero, 3/4 sleeves maybe, or a longer jacket with a subtle peplum treatment. Whatever you decide, I do believe your perseverance will pay off in sewing your Vogue dress. As for those insets/gores on that top you don't like, I'm finding that in ready-to-wear, and it's the designers' way of making a garment fit larger women without making the entire circumference (top to bottom) so big. But the flare those insets create is not flattering at all. Even gathers would look better. It's almost like maternity-wear as well. I can understand your disappointment. I'd love to see you how solve the issue, though. Until later take care and be well. Enjoy the sunshine!

    Hi Viv, there are some patterns that I hate, but I always blame myself (I picked the wrong fabric, I didn't adjust the size enough etc. etc.), it's good to see an expert (in my eyes anyway) say that a particular pattern is a no no, it makes me think that perhaps it isn't
    always my fault! As always, TFS 👍❤

    Hey there! I've got a question for you. Back about 40 odd years ago, I bought a lightweight raincoat from Lerner's Dress Shop that was mid calf. The fabric was really lightweight and was lined. It had a smooth feel to it, but I know it wasn't nylon. It was woven and slightly waterproof. If it was raining, it took a really long time for the water to start soaking through, but if it got wet, it dried quickly...Would you, in your vast knowledge about fabrics, have any idea what kind of fabric that might have been???
    I loved that rain coat/jacket. I would love to sew another one. I just have no idea what kind of fabric it might have been.

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sandcastle, I’m sorry it’s taken me a week. I ordered a “water resistant” fabric from Fashion Fabrics Club described as a “snappy feel” and while it was lightweight, it was waaaay too “snappy” (read: crisp bordering on crunchy) for apparel. My husband made a tent awning out of it. The point is, water resistant fabrics can run the gamut. The trick is to find a soft one. Your Lerner’s coat (what a great old, iconic store that was!) could have been a thinner khaki treated with water-repellant. It’s hard to say. I think your best
      bet is to order a fabric swatch before committing to yardage. Or if the description comes right out and says “raincoat apparel fabric” it would probably work. The fabric itself can be anything from cotton to poly. This wasn’t much help, I know!😭😭

    • @SandcastleDreams
      @SandcastleDreams 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vivmomsews4962 I think I finally found it! There's a company called Dharma Trading and I just got their catalog in the mail yesterday. It's Poplin! It's a very tight woven fabric, but it's light. So, I'll buy some of their poplin and dye it. They sell ready to dye fabrics by the yard and by the bolt.
      Thanks for your response! Happy Sewing!

    I have strawberry blonde hair and when I color it and it comes out one shade darker, I feel it looks black! I think your hair looks dark blonde. Wash it a time or two and it will lighten. I’m a fan of blonde so I like your hair better a little more light, but it still looks great!

    • @vivmomsews4962
      @vivmomsews4962  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes!! I get that shocked feeling, like “what has happened?!” and yet it’s pretty subtle. My hair really is browner now than it’s showing on this video. Doesn’t it figure? I make a big deal of my hair being darker and it looks the same. In real life it’s kind of startlingly dark. But I like it! A little sun (praying for sun🙏) should lighten it up. Thanks for understanding Susan!!
