Is it possible to fragment an image, by placing a shape over the top? Every time I try, it merges the formats and turns the image into a shape, although I did manage to do it successfully once (I just can't remember how!).

Christopher Joynson You may want to try fragmenting the shape first, then grouping them together and then inserting the picture. This adds the picture across the fragmented shapes, making the picture appear fragmented as well.

you could use a png image of sticker

Vedants, thats right, you can use a png image. You would not be able to customize it to your requirement - color / gradients, size, effects etc. Also you need to consider copyright issues when using others images. Following the video also helps you learn new features of PowerPoint 2013 that you can use to design your own diagrams.
