The funniest thing about Canadian hockey players, is that they're total badasses...but their accent and the way they talk is so unintimidating at the same time haha
The best part about hockey trash talk, is you can actually decide to go to blows In other sports you just try to wind people up, but in hockey you have the chance to back it up, or be called out and have your ass kicked..
What's unique about hockey is that "chirping' isn't usually coming from a place of anger or strong emotion. It's a jovial technique to get under the skin of the opponent. Much different than mic'd up conversations in other sports (MLB, NFL), where insults usually come from rage.
On that Pepsi clip: Phil Kessel gets chirped about eating hot dogs and drinking Pepsi, not necessarily the healthiest of choices. His teammates too have chirped him on it. He's got a good sense of humour about it
I grew up in Toronto too and I've been to a few Leafs games, but I also been to Florida and went to some Panthers games. Same atmosphere, hockey fans are cool people
Back in the 80's a friend of mine played for the Minnesota North Stars. He would give me tickets right behind the players bench. It was so much fun hearing the chatter from the players.
The charity events and fan interactions in hockey are so heart-warming too. A brutal sport like this and most are straight gentlemen. I'd watch a reaction video of those moments from these guys.
And back then (the 80's BTW), it was brutal. I went to quite a few of those games in Edmonton. Pure hatred between them. Semenko vs Hunter fights were epic.
6:16 is a guy named Tie Domi. One of the toughest enforcers that was ever in the game. I've seen videos of him where he's about ready to fight and he's just got this huge smile on his face. He loved that stuff.
Great reaction! We have season tickets for the NHL’s San Jose Sharks and I can tell you when you have a sold out arena of 17,000+ fans, it can be absolutely electric! And when fights pop off, everyone goes nuts! It’s a lot of fun! I can’t wait until we can have fans back in the arena’s safely... yeah we want to get back to going to games but we are ok with taking our time getting to the point where we have that again! And I agree that the whole participation trophy things is absolutely ridiculous! Learning to lose with dignity is just as important as learning to win with class. Even more important is learning that nothing is or should ever be handed to you... otherwise we are raising children expecting that they’ll always get what they want rather than working hard for what they want. I have coached youth softball starting when I was a senior in high school and our league made sure that participation trophies were only for the 5-8 year olds in divisions where we didn’t keep standings. When they hit 9 it got competitive and only the top two or three teams received some kind of trophy.
I love hockey and I think it is awesome you guys have reacted to a couple of videos. Can't wait for you to do more. Hockey gets better and better the more you watch it.
One of the clips was the Flames vs Oilers from when I was a kid (1989?). I used to sneak into the den to watch those western conference playoffs, and they were nasty. The league cleaned up the game, but Islanders-Penguins around 2011 was a modern equivalent.
Kind of did the same when I was in Little League Baseball. Our team finished last and they gave us a trophy. The next year we brought them to the first practice and destroyed them with our bats. We almost won the league that season.
I'm loving this and you guys don't know how accurate you are about hockey players. Everything you've said about other sports applies to hockey, as well.
It's not about loving to win as much as it's about HATING to lose. Also in case anyone was wondering, a pigeon is a player who "picks up the scraps" of their teammates, hence the bird noises.
Phil Kessel Used to get a Hot Dog (streetMeat) and coke before every leafs game. After he was traded, he won the cup in Pittsburg, and brought the cup back to Toronto, and his hotdog vendor outside union Station. Dudes a legend.
U guys should add how wolves change rivers to the list ofthings to watch, its a wildlife type video, only bout 8-10 mins long, but its actually really interesting
It's funny at 12:07 the two players there, Giroux and Van Reimsdyk, they're teammates now and have been prior to that clip they're great friends 🤣 he's just calling his buddy a pigeon hahaha
When Giroux (28 orange) I asked Phil if he’d had a Pepsi today, he was in fact, calling Phil fat. Kessel is (was - he’s nearly done now) the only superstar in the modern NHL with the front porch
Mic'd up moments in sports are great. NHL has some of the best and even the refs chime in. That is one thing I enjoy about Rugby because the ref is mic'd up the whole game and you can hear him talking to all these huge beefy guys like he is their school teacher. If you do like hockey players shit talking, you need to check out Letterkenny. Either the whole show or at least clips like "the best of shoresy" I think you three would get a lot of enjoyment. Love your reactions, keep doing them. Looking forward to next podcast as well.
In hockey you have the tough guys who fight but there is also have the aggitators, they go around winding up other players but very unlikely to get into fights.
The passion is high in hockey because it can be so dangerous. Cheap shit can’t be tolerated. Sticks, speed, and sharp blades can kill. I’m a pa. Native , played it up to high school, seen terrible injuries.
The NFL REAL mic’d up is supposed to be really brutal. They say that if the NFL didn’t censor the game it would be must see TV. Most of the mic’d up we get from them is extremely edited and is never heard by outside ears which is disappointing. Because this is amazing! 😂😂😂 I can’t imagine what they REALLY say on a football field.
From my team, Tim Hunter "Huh, you had your fuckin chance". I was there with.my dad and on the way home in the car he let me repeat it a bunch of times. haha.
The pepsi comment is more of a dig at the fact that Kessel is sorta that "out of shape" athlete with a beer belly. Which he simply doesn't care about. He's managed to rack up over 1000 Game's played over 300 goals, nearly 500 assists and almost 1000 points 2 Stanley Cups (back to back) 3 All Star games. 30+ Goals in the Playoffs nearly 50 assists and over 80 Points. And he probably has a conversation about making the hall of fame.
I think there was probably a reference to coke there which giroux has been accused of doing. He may have been chirped earlier and why he brought it up to Kessel. Total conjecture on my part. Kessel is known for not being a healthy eater for sure.
9:17 A few years ago, the college I attended played a football game against a vastly inferior opponent. The starting players were done by the end of the first quarter. By half-time, the score was 63-0. Early in the third quarter, 4th and 5th squad players were on the field, and things were getting even worse. My school's coach called a time out and asked the referee to speak to the opposing coach to ask him if he just wanted to call it a day and tap out. To his credit, he declined the offer. The game ended 105-6. I read that the losing coach told his players after the game that there's a life lesson in every experience, including the humiliating ones. The odds are very good that everyone will at some point endure an event far more serious than an ass-whooping on a football field. I certainly wished I could trade some of my worst life experiences for an afternoon of futility.
I agree wholeheartedly, play to fuckin win, the competition, the losses the interaction albeit not always civil between players teaches children how to cope with life
They’ve actually done multiple conclusive studies that not assigning winners and losers or giving everyone trophies actually makes the losing team feel worse because they do in fact know what’s going on and they know that they didnt earn anything. And when they don’t keep score kids loose interest significantly faster since there’s no point in playing if you cant win. It’s more pronounced in boys and especially those who are competitive by nature, with some refusing to even take part to start with if no one is keeping score
You call someone a pigeon when they’re a player who “picks up your scraps” and doesn’t contribute. Giroux was messing with JVR because they used to be teammates and this was one of the first games against each other.

I also hate when coaches and teams are criticized in our football for destroying an opponent even when the 2nd and 3rd string players are in and are as good or better than the other team's first string. Are they supposed to say sorry we're that much better than you? We lost a couple of games by 40 or so when I was in high school and it pissed us off more than it embarrassed us.
