Ours too, mind you sometimes it's hard for us to choose a favourite seafood dish in Mazatlan. We're definitely spoiled for choice here, but zarandeado is always a lovely treat.
Fiona, you're not a cheapskate, you're frugal... which has enable you to travel for years and have amazing experiences! 😃😁 Frugality is a quality to be embraced! I'm so pleased that if friends and family now call us stingy or tight, we simply say... no, we're frugal, and that shuts them up 😁🤣 ~ Mandy
Here in Mexico it's PRACTICO, which also has a nice ring to it! For stingy or tight it's common to say "codo" while pointing to your bent-elbow. This has several meanings form what we understand. A google search will explain these meanings better than we can! 🤣
@@ACoupleofDrifters I am so going to remember PRACTICO... that's great, thank you! I'll look up CODO now 😃😁 I love the informative videos and comments from you two! ~ Mandy
Zarandeado at Mazatlan's palapa restaurants is always a treat for us. Many of the palapa restaurants on the beach serve similar dishes at similar prices, but Puerto Azul is one of our favorites. We hope you get a chance to eat there soon!
Ricky always calls the fish cheeks “scallops” lol. Glad to see you enjoy them too! And Fiona you’re not cheap- you’re frugal ! (Nothing wrong with that !) Great vlog you two, really enjoyed a peak at the Malecón and your fish dinner looked fabulous ❤️🇲🇽
It sounds like Ricky knows how to pick a fish apart, too! It feels good to be penny-pinchers but we're happy we treated ourselves to a feast and destroyed an entire 2 kg fish! Thanks for the lovely compliment!
We hope you have a few good reasons to visit Mazatlan during your trip down in December. If you go for the zarandeado, make sure you bring a few people to help you finish the dish.
@@ACoupleofDrifters You have given us many reasons to visit Mazatlán, but our first trip in December will be much delayed return to the deep south: the Oaxaca Coast for 4 weeks + one week in Mexico City. I will be looking for zarandeado - but searching for somewhere to cook our mercado camarones like that place you featured in Mazatlán. Thanks to you guys we are going to be a lot more observant about food options.
Enjoy your time in Mexico - and let us know if you find somewhere that cooks up your market shrimp for you! We're happy knowing that we've given you a few things to be on the lookout for!
Hi Teresa. The zarandeado is lovely, just make sure you bring a good appetite and a family member/friend or two to help get through the entire platter.
No, I have not tried this style of fish and your video was the first time I ever heard of it. Definitely would love to try it. Love seafood and especially love enjoying seafood in Mexico!!
Hi Yolie, we hope you get to try zarandeado in Mazatlan or it's home state of Nayarit. Here in Mazatlan you'll be spoiled for choice with amazing seafood.
Hi Jim. we recommend Puerto Azul which we've been to many times or La Jaiba Pata Salada, which we've never been to. The reason we recommend these two is because they are always busy. Often you'll see queues for these two palapa restaurants whilst surrounding palapa restaurants are wide open! We've tried a couple of the other restaurants for zarandeado and to be honest we were brought out some milky-eyed, dull-looking shadows of their former fish selves as specimens! Maybe we just chose a bad day of the week to try some other restaurants. We wanted to try somewhere else but we just ended up returning to Puerto Azul. Having said that we have had other fish dishes at other palapa restaurants and they've been fantastic.
Enjoy Puerto Azul! We used to live in Albuquerque years and years ago. Even to this day we still find ourselves drawn to New Mexico and still spend A LOT of time in the state. Also, we think New Mexican food is THE best-tasting regional cuisine in the entire country. As a matter of fact, we are here in Mazatlan right now making New Mexican-style carne adovada with some dry red chilies we brought back from our last trip there!
Hi Mandy. The entire meal -sides included was $24 USD. That is how zarandeado is served, it comes with the rice, salad and pico de gallo. Crackers, tostadas and salsas are bog standard complimentary condiments/accompaniments that come with just about most dishes in restaurants in Mexico. The beers were 30 MXN ($1.50 USD) each.
F & J.....that fish is sooo good you deserve a treat,,,besides have it for luch tommorrw ,,then its cheaper,,,hahahaha left overs are great..thank you ever so much
oh my goodness i think years ago it was at the crab shackor jungle juice its was in front of las palams hotel now gone,,but a block from panamas bakery
Hi, thanks for the great video. Do you remember the name of the resto? We travel to mazatlan soon enough and are looking forward to local, authentic experience, hence binging your videos. (We speak Spanish.)
Thank you for binging on our videos - this means a lot to us! The restaurant featured in this video is Puerto Azul - this is the third or fourth beachfront palapa restaurant as you head north along the malecon from Mazatlan's Fisherman's Monument. Puerto Azul is between Hotel Hacienda and Hotel Playa Marina. Enjoy your visit to Mazatlan!
Looked delicious, I would do the same as far as taking what's left home, it is unethical to waste food in the world we live in today, especially good food.
It seems they brought out one of the biggest fish they had, 🤔 not nice, they SHOULD have showed you a couple different sizes and let you pick, but they didn't ☹️ just don't go there again and next time walk away if they don't want to sell the less pricy fish 🤨🤔
Hi Olivia, We've ordered zarandeado (and whole fried fish) from this restaurant on many occasions - sometimes they have a selection of sizes and sometimes they don't - it all depends on what they have that day and how busy they are. We ate the whole fish...and it was a bruiser! Indeed, next time we will definitely be on the hunt for a smaller whole fish when our cameras aren't rolling! 😂
My favorite way to eat fish
Ours too, mind you sometimes it's hard for us to choose a favourite seafood dish in Mazatlan. We're definitely spoiled for choice here, but zarandeado is always a lovely treat.
So lovely to see you laughing and smiling at the end 😃😁 25 years together is a wonderful achievement, so congratulations! 🥳🎉 ~ Mandy
Thank you Mandy!

Such a cute video - thank you for the info you bring on the dishes and for the views on the malecon. The cheek meat part was funny :)!
Thank you for the compliment - we're very happy you enjoyed the video! Talking about delicious, meaty cheeks gave me the giggles too! 😂
That is a nice treat. It looks very appetizing. Thanks for the vidéo.
Thanks Marthe. It most definitely was a treat. If you've never had zarandeado, we hope you get to give it a try here someday soon.
That looked delicious! Thanks for sharing.
We love zarandeado - this is one of our favorite seafood dishes!
Thank you for adding another delicious looking dish to my to do list!

Hola Amigos. Wow!!! That looks absolutely delicious. That’s a dish we have never had. However we have had cheeks before. Great video.
More fans of fish cheeks! Enjoy your time with family and friends in Texas!
Looks yummy, we will definitely try it when we visit in December! Thanks for the video.

Another adorable episode. Greetings from our Salón del Mar. We returned late last night..
Thanks a million Bruno. Hope you had tonnes of fun back home and that all went well.
I already had dinner, but now you made me hungry again, lol 😂
We hope you get some zarandeado soon! Have you ever had this dish before? If so, where have you had it in Mexico?

Do you recommend a specific Palapa restaurant?

That meal looked absolutely incredible! Were the sides included in the price or are they extra? I think $24 was great value for that fish! ~ Mandy

Hopefully you'll be eating plenty of seafood in Mazatlan real soon!
In China they say the fish cheeks are the best, too!
These are a fine delicacy - we just wish that fish had bigger cheeks! 😁

Hmm 😋 - that looks delicious Fi and Jerry. Susie would have eaten the skin if she’d been there - platter licked clean ☺️
You'd love zarandeado, sounds like wee Susie would too. She might have to do battle with Jerry for the fish skin. 😂🤣
Looked delicious, I would do the same as far as taking what's left home, it is unethical to waste food in the world we live in today, especially good food.
Indeed, wasting food is a no-no for us and bringing our own container hopefully eliminates a bit of waste as well.
