  • Bob Pellerin (CTOBOB) drives from Montreal (Canada) to Houston, Texas in his Toyota RAV4 Prime. In the 3000KM (2000 Miles) trip down he keeps an eye out for Changing stations in order to get an idea of what driving an EV would be like. The consumption going to Texas as way better than he return trip. Starting at 4.5-5.5L initially (up to 70MPG) the consumption increased dramatically on the leg back, falling to 6.5L/100KM (34-38MPG).
Bob provides not only tips on what to look at before leaving but also shows you some of the places along the way. Some shots were films with the DJI Mini 3 Pro he reviewed in another video.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ve ordered a BZ4X but am starting to second guess my decision because of how poor the charging network is.

    • @BobPellerin

I have a BZ4X on order as well. This trip has definately taught me that I'm going to only use it for local use. it would be a nightmare both in finding the chargers and how long it takes. We'd only stop for 15-30 min to record and eat. Imagine if every stop has to be hours. Thanks for the comment! Let me know what you end up doing!

My RAV 4 Hybrid gets 44 mpg on the highway. I have spoken for a 2023 RAV 4 Prime. Now after reading your comments, and another that said they only get 34 mpg, I'm not sure if the Prime is worth the extra money.

You get this if you stay local most the time. If you wanted to maximize hwy travel you'll lose a ton of time.

It’s not worth the extra money if all you do is highway as was my case. I traded it in for a BZ4X so now I’m in EV mode 100%. :)

@@BobPellerin Update: on Nov. 18, i took the leap. I traded my RAV 4 Hybrid for a 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. I have driven over 1,000 miles and have spent $0.00 to charge the car. I charge some at work for free, and use a Rivian Waypoint Level 2 11.5 kW free charger ( a 4 minute walk from my door) for most of my charging. And i have used free level 2 chargers on a few 155 mile (one-way) or shorter road trips.
I also own a '99 Ford F-250 4wd for hauling or towing if needed. The Bolt is my daily driver.

These vehicles kind of make sense if you can charge them at home and do a lot of local driving. In any other situation they don’t seem to be worth the extra hassle, plus they cost more than a regular hybrid.

I fully agree with you. Although we drove in EV a lot, the range just wasn’t that great for our needs. So I traded it in for BZ4X.

Why didn't you use PlugShare or some other ev charge station finder PRIOR to your trip to better plan? No one in an ev just goes for a road trip hoping there will be plenty of charging options on the way.

    • @BobPellerin
      @BobPellerin  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sadly the planning was less than perfect. We found broken chargers. If you have to drive to find 1 on 4 that works it’s not ideal. One town had two but required driving out of the way to a hospital.

If an oil change was done before the maintenance light went on that means you just need to reset the light. That light is supposed to come on every 5k miles I believe to remind driver that an oil change is needed.

We own 2 Rav 4 Primes. First just over 2 years the second just over one year.
85% of our driving has been in all EV which is commutes to and from work.
Road trips we don’t waste our time charging. Think about it 3.3 kWh charger 4.5 hrs with a level 2 to go 40 miles is a waste of my time.
Gas mode on the freeway traveling 80 mph will net you 34 mpg.
This is the best all around auto. We have owned.

6000 km is absolutely irrelevant for a Japanese vehicle.
A 6000km toyota is a brand new vehicle coming out of a factory.
The only way to make a sensible review on a Toyota is from 100 000 up.

Crappy video didn't say average litre per 100km for hydrid use . After all it is a hybrid. Not an ev. On a recent trip my gas car was at its best getting 6.8 litres per 100. Average was 7.8 on a 1000km trip so you blew it . That's what I wanted to see . Ev car are not ready for prime time yet .
