I'm Becoming a RAV4 Prime Apologist

  • It's no secret that the Toyota RAV4 Prime is one of my favorite vehicles. There simply isn't anything else like it on the market, but... competitors are closing in. While none of them has matched the RAV's full combination of practicality and efficiency, some are getting darn close -- or offering compelling alternative reasons. Does the RAV manage to stay ahead of the Ford Escape PHEV and Hyundai Tucson PHEV, or are its glory days behind it now that the federal tax credit no longer applies? I took one down to the beach on vacation to find out.

    Love my Prime. I remember walking out of the grocery store and witnessing someone turning their head as they walked past it since I had it plugged in charging on the free EV parking spot. Just got the tow hitch installed so I can fully utilize that 2,250lbs of tow capacity.

      Lol, I had a similar experience. I was parked in a hospital parking garage in one of a few free charging spaces for EV vehicles that the had.
      As I was returning to my vehicle I ran into another woman who was just unplugging her Tesla in the next slot. She began to gush how she just loves her EV car. Then asked what kind of vehicle I had as she didn't recognize it (from the side). I told her is was an Rav4. She looked astonished and said she didn't know there was an EV model. Then she asked about the range. I told her it was a PHEV, that it gets about 42 miles of range. Looking very underwhelmed she then when into how she has gets well over 200 miles on her Tesla, how it has so much more range. I told her I had considered a full EV, but didn't feel like the infrastructure was fully in place to support them at every station yet. Then there is the time to charge with the current state of battery tech. It still doesn't beat 5 minutes to fill a tank of gas. But the main reason being we like to take long road trips and worrying about reaching the next charging station in the middle of nowhere was something I wanted to avoid.
      Needless to say, the enthusiasm on her face dimmed significantly, ending the conversation with "oh yeah, I see what you mean. Well nice meeting you."

    You keep focusing on in the video, what alot of people keep focusing on - how much it costs. I'm in Vancouver, Canada and i could care less, because in 10-15 years i'm going to resell my 2024 for more than any other Rav4 as a %age of new price, and for far more than it's Korean cousins. Having the newest tech may be best for you, but for me it's all about reliability and total cost of ownership. And that's why i think this is still the best choice, even in 2024 with the new Rav4 set to come out next year. I bought an XSE WITHOUT the $6,000 tech package, because i'm a truck driver who doesn't need the majority of the tech stuff.

    I would love a RAV4 Prime as part of an optimal two car garage solution. But that price! Not to mention lack of availability. With a new 2024 RAV4 on the way will be interested to see if Toyota can even meet the demand for the current one. We did have a dealer agree to an SE at MSRP only but it was right after the tax credit ran out. Bummer as with the credit it would have a much better value than a hybrid. And a great unique and valuable commentary as always.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do wonder what the Prime’s power train would add to a base model RAV. Obviously, a fully loaded model with limited availability is going to command i high price, but if Toyota can increase production to match demand and proliferate it across trims… would that bring the price down to around $30k base? We own a base LE trim, and I’d certainly consider trading some options for that powertrain for a daily driver.

    So far I am very satisfied with my 2022 R4P. Daily commutes to work average around 36 miles round trip. For all intents and purposes, I have been driving a full EV vehicle around town as I can go many weeks without burning a drop of gas.
    My record distance on an EV charge was nearly 50 miles. It was during the summer, using every trick in the book for acceleration and regen. Making liberal use of the S-Modes, etc.
    I went with the R4P because my family enjoys long road trips to Florida to visit family on vacation. More than 2000 miles round trip. I a full EV would not be practical for me. Especially since we drive straight, no overnight stops. Which is over 900 miles one way. That 302hp on the open highway is awesome too.
    Also, not having any "range anxiety" is a nice bit of peace of mind. Don't have to hunt down charging stations. Especially in those off the beaten path small towns or gas stations along the way.
    That said, this is my first winter with the R4P and I can definitely say the weather and temps are a big influence on EV mileage. I have seen the range drop a few miles, and charging seems to be at least an hour longer. But it was expected, with grid lock traffic, longer periods using the headlights, heating, etc. The estimated EV range literally drops a few miles on the dash as soon as you turn on the heater.
    At any rate, I am still very happy with the vehicle so far. (Though I have some concerns about this "cablegate" situation I recently learned of.)
    Being someone who enjoys tech and electronics as a hobby, one of my hopes is that I can build a solar array on the garage that would charge completely (or more realistically in conjunction with grid power) the Prime. So I can reduce overall home electrical cost in charging it.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Got my RAV4 Prime SE 02/2021, paid $3,000 in over priced dealer Add On. Back then it was $7,500 federal tax credit and $3,000😊 in SCE and clean fuels rebates. Almost 20K miles with 80% in EV mode. Currently paying 16 cents/ kilowatt, and oil changes every 10K miles. I usually get close to 40 miles on the battery in mix driving. Overall I am totally satisfied with it including the price I paid.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Most of these packs have a substantial number of cycles before they deteriorate as well as safeguards built in to ensure they last as long as possible. Also, as battery packs age they don't just stop working; they simply don't retain power as well. Most research seems to show around an 80% average retention many years down the road, which means on something like the Prime your 40 miles of range would be closer to 35--not a huge difference. I would confidently keep one long term, especially since Toyota has been a leader in the hybrid space

    I finally gave up tryign to find one and decided to just pay a deposit at a large dealer in Ohio to get on their waiting list. Based on the number of people they have waiting and the number of allocations they're expecting to get, I should get mine in 18-24 months. Yep, Toyota really sh*t the bed on this one. It's criminal that this far into the supply chain problem, they're still struggling to produce their most popular models, while most other brands are in much better shape. I half way believe Toyota is intentionally suppressing production to keep demand (and prices) at the max. Every brand is trying their best to condition their buyers to accept that these absurd prices are the new normal.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This has been a problem. It’s bumming me out how often I hear this from people: not just about models like the Prime but about all vehicles. Dealers need to stop hosing people and using inventory as the sole reason. As conditions improve, it’s unacceptable. Thanks for watching, and best of luck!

    As a recovering plug in Prius driver, I am used to looking down my nose at SUV's, automatically thinking, GASHOG. But now that I bought a 2021 Prime 2 days ago, (paid 40 K, it has 22 K miles on it) I realized that I have to change my attitude. Unlike the easily recognizable Prius, the Prime kinda looks "normal" to the general public, at least to most of them. Now I am worried about some some snob of a Prius driver thinking I'm driving a gas hog of a SUV, whereas actually my overall fuel usage will be less than the Prius. Yes, I'm joking. Like most, my average driving day can easily be covered by the EV range the Prime has, I am selling my 2 wheel drive Prius, AND my older RAV4 AWD rig, now that the Prime will offer better economy in most of my driving (with excess solar power, my recharging is free) plus it will also keep me moving in the winter snow.

    You know, that’s basically just another crossover. SUVs are bad for the environment. Crossovers are bad for the environment. They’re very unwieldy, top-heavy and dangerous. And if you need to haul a lot of stuff, you could just get a station wagon or a sedan for a large truck or something like that. You don’t need that man midlife crisis truck.

    • @KnightSanguinius
      @KnightSanguinius หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Prime has its battery quite low down and so it's not as top heavy. Also as station wagons have become less popular getting a hybrid station wagon would probably be difficult and so you'd most likely have to get an ICE one which will be worse for the environment than a Hybrid or Plug in Hybrid SUV. If you can convince a reliable automaker like Toyota to make a Hybrid or Plug in Hybrid station wagon then my second argument can be invalidated retroactively.
