I replaced mine on general principal. Couldn’t believe how much tighter the new one sealed. It started with the oil cap because it was leaking oil. So I just replaced them both.
The tankpressure should not have any influence on running right. The pressure is regulated by the impluse line to the carburetor where the diaphragm functions as a fuel pump which will suck up the fuel from the tank. The tank vent is only to prevent a vacuum in the tank but other than that there is no pressure regulation in the tank itself. It could have worked for you but logically it is not the solution for the problem. A chainsaw will also run properly without a tank cap.
There is an impulse line because you need a pressurized tank ... if you have a leak you have no pressure. pretty obvious but you most definitely need the cap not only on but sealed 100%
Some of those style caps were recalled at one point as well. Any one with Stihl should run their numbers to see if the equipment falls into the recall. Chainsaws and weed trimmers.
Are you saying the saw would not accelerate when needed? My saw seems to bog or hesitate when cutting. If that is the case of what you are saying, then you are my hero. Thanks
Paul, a slight hesitation on throttling up could be one of two things. A simple carb adjustment, or the carburetor strainer (internal screen) needs cleaned out. Check the O-ring on the cap and if it's ok, I would lean towards the carb needing attention. Cheers! Zip~
There is a prefilter in the tank as well as under the pump side of the carburetor. There's a diaphragm side and the fuel delivery side on these carburetors. Nothing scary inside them. The screen/filter inside the carburetors are to catch anything that gets past the air filter and often, they become clogged. It's about the size of a pencil eraser. Here is a video that shows how to clean one of these carburetors. Zip~ th-cam.com/video/Lpe6fH2CuZ0/w-d-xo.html
I just want to let you know that I thank you for your post. I just fixed my problem watching your video. You just saved me going through a lot of hassle. I thought I had to have the carburetor rebuilt. Who could have thought. It's blessed to watch your video. Thank you again. If you would like my videos about loving America, please search TH-cam Du Hua.
Thank you for your Service Du Hua. I'm an 8 year Navy Veteran my self and I think you'll find I have a very strong bond with my Country. I will check out your Channel. And I'm glad this helped you with your saw! Cheers!! Zip~
Close to the same thing, my wife didn't tighten her gas cap after getting gas. On the way home her check engine light came on. She took it to the dealer, paid them $90 for them to reset and tighten the cap. Auto Zone would have checked it free.
The check engine light came on because it is programed to show if the cap isn't sealed as a part of emissions reduction; keeping the gas in the tank from evaporating out the fill opening! The car ran fine with the loose gas cap.
After I replaced the cap (bought a new one), I took an o-ring from my kit that also did the trick. Now, I've got a spare cap and 9 more o-rings. This problem won't plague me again. lol Cheers my good Friend! Zip~
what was wrong with the old caps ? I don't need more problems when out in the woods. had several problems with these caps. switched back to husky saws. they run good with less problems.
Yea Zip I know frustrating it is when you go thru all that and it will won't run right and when you discover it was a silly simple fix, you look at yourself. and go "Duh"! I have a older 3hp horizontal shaft Briggs that came attached to a transfer pump that will not run. I cleaned carb in a ultrasonic cleaner, have good spark, the pickup tubes are fine. I finally got it started ran like it was loading up. Went to adjust the carb and it stalled and will not start. It has me baffled. Also has decent compression. Any ideas would a great help. Thanks Ray from Central Ohio.
If it's the carb I'm thinking about, take the main jet metering screw out and using a soft solid core wire, like a garage door wire and poke it through the main jet hole. Then use compressed air (low pressure) and make sure both pick up tubes are clear also with low pressure air. Some have a check valve in the longer pick up. Also, if the engine sat for an extended period of time, the fuel turns to varnish. You may think you've gotten the pick up tubes clean and clear, then the introduction of new fuel softens the varnish and causes a new plugged up pick up. A can of carb cleaner also goes a long way at eating up the old varnish, but expect the issue to continue until all the varnish is clear of the pick up tubes. Cheers! Zip~
That's a pretty common issue with the "smart" ignition technology in the 201 and why many prefer the 200 over it. Others have said if they blip the throttle right before the saw reaches idle it saves them from stalling out. But so far as I know, there isn't a good fix other than setting the idle speed higher, which runs the risk of the chain continuing to engage from the clutch. Sorry I couldn't be of more help Blades. Cheers! Zip~
Hey Zipp! The ven't on my 200t don't look like yours. But, when I cut horizontal gas comes out of the ven't at the carb, then it dies. How to fix? Thanks.
I am glad you made this, I never look at the gas cap.... I will now.. :) Also K.I.S.S could stand for Keep It Simple Student that would pair nicely with your lesson for today video. :)
If it's been a while since the carburetor has been gone through and cleaned, it may be time. Another possibility is the ignition module may be getting weak. Start with the easy stuff first. Gas Cap (like in this video), Increase Idle Speed Screw, carburetor cleaning, fuel line replacements, Ignition issues. Then if you're still having issues, I would take it to a reputable service center. But there are many things you can perform your self before hand if you're confident enough. There are plenty of videos here on TH-cam to help you with all of the maintenance procedures. Good Luck Ranger! Zip~
Are you still monitoring your page buddy? I also am having an idling problem with my beloved ms200t I also have a 201 and a 150 but I’d really like to get my 200t back in service if you’d be willing to run some things by you.
ZippoVarga hello mate sorry about slow reply it’s been terrible here! Too much work and bad weather!! Basically my fuel Lines are fine, my air filter is fine it starts fine and revs well enough but seems to get hot kinda quick and won’t idle at all! Was thinking to try adjusting the carb blind (as it won’t idle even for a moment) should I check something else first? I checked with a gas cap from my 201 and same issue
The cam lock on the cap was weak on top of the o ring being bad. The cap didn't break the bank and it was insurance that I wouldn't be dumping all my fuel while aloft in a tree. Cheers! Zip~
You gotta hold your lips right to get that new fuel line in eh!!! 10 years from now there will be an error code and you will have to clear the code with your OBDI reader.
Oh Bruce....Have you done one of these yet on either the MW192T or 200T? What a PIA they are! lol...I'm still glad I have the piece of mind of new lines and vent, but yes....a real pain in the arse! lol That reminds me....my local Stihl guy ordered filters for me that I need to go pick up this morning. Cheers my Northern Friend! Zip~
Dude. Holy cow. Spent like 20 hours on this thing and it was the cap. Runs flawless when I hold cap shut with hand and test it. Damn thank you!!!!
I replaced mine on general principal. Couldn’t believe how much tighter the new one sealed. It started with the oil cap because it was leaking oil. So I just replaced them both.

correct
with no vent the impulse cannot pull fuel, you are incorrect.
If you don't know what you are talking about, don't comment.
There is an impulse line because you need a pressurized tank ... if you have a leak you have no pressure. pretty obvious but you most definitely need the cap not only on but sealed 100%
If the pressure was required, then there would be no need for a vent in the fuel tank system. And the saw couldn't start before pressure built up.
Some of those style caps were recalled at one point as well. Any one with Stihl should run their numbers to see if the equipment falls into the recall. Chainsaws and weed trimmers.

ZippoVarga thank you very much. I will check it out. Now internal filter, is that located in the tank

ZippoVarga thank you
Also a clogged spark arrester screen shows same symptoms

True, thank you for stopping by and confirming the cap and why. Have a great, and healthy upcoming weekend.@@shermanhofacker4428
For the longest time my Farm Boss has never been quite right. I've already burnt up one engine. My fuel cap leaks. This might be the fix. Thanks!
No cracks in the O ring but I know that cap leaks. Maybe the ring got old and shrunk. For $5 I'll give it a go.
After I replaced the cap (bought a new one), I took an o-ring from my kit that also did the trick. Now, I've got a spare cap and 9 more o-rings. This problem won't plague me again. lol Cheers my good Friend! Zip~

The O-Ring was all that was wrong with the cap. I've replaced the O-Ring and have the cap as a back up in my tool kit now. Zip~

+ZippoVarga ok Zip thanks I will try your suggestions.
I wish that was what was wrong with mine. I'm still (not) beating around the bush as a result..
My ms201t dies if I let off the throttle too quickly. What on earth could that be? I cleaned the carb and its just a little bit better.

@@ZippoVarga Your reply was sufficient. Its a shame it does that. Come on R&D guys get it together. Other than that its a great saw.
Hey Zipp! The ven't on my 200t don't look like yours. But, when I cut horizontal gas comes out of the ven't at the carb, then it dies. How to fix? Thanks.
Get a new vent from the dealer

Hey, good substitution!! Zip~ (Zip Tip) lol
Guys one of my 200t start runs and cuts great but if I throttle back from cutting to idle it will cut out.

Why didn’t you just replace the O ring?

Yes, Probably for the best, why on earth they couldn't just use a thread like every other container in the world. Great video by the way.
Nice to know thanks .

Stihl is one of the makers where you do have to buy their stuff. Which is ok. They have a good supply chain.
