Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

Having the time counter and attempt counter on screen was entertaining... and rather surprising. Almost 240 attempts in almost three hours... averaging four attempts per three minutes, which is an insane pace.
Most attempts were probably complete fails

Pretty sure Scrapman edits his own videos. He's definitely talked about it before, but that may have been a really long time ago - so may have changed.
@@crayder1100He's definitely hired on an editor to help him. He probably does some editing, but the person he hired does a lot of it so he can do research and focus on builds or his music

I have to appreciate the time it took to edit in every try into this video. Made the failures that much more interesting to watch, but made the successful try something I felt I could celebrate with you. One of your top TrailMaker videos in my opinion. Thanks for the entertainment you channel provides!

I think the yaw was broken because the panels were angled causing the wings to affect both roll and yaw. This is an actual concept known as a v tail. Would love to see this explored further in trailmakers and maybe even scrapmechanic.
Yep. In addition, the angling was not taken into account with the forces display.
I saw Yzuei's video last night... and it was very interesting to see your plane build after already seeing and knowing how many attempts it took to get the stunt right.
I think the next movie stunt should be something from Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible movies, since we're seeing a new one coming out now. I'll let you and other commenters who think this is a good general concept be more specific.
Props to Scrapman for spending four hours to turn Yzuei’s car into a convertible
For the sudden flip, you just need to add weight to the nose. Center of mass being behind center of lift and center of pressure doesn't necessarily make it pitch up. Rather, it makes it dynamically unstable in pitch, meaning the higher the plane's angle of attack gets, the more it wants to increase it.
You could fix that in a few ways.
One is adding more horizontal stabilizers near the rear, to move the centers of lift and pressure back. The powered fins artificially move the center of pressure much more than they naturally should.
Two is adding weight to the nose to move the center of mass forward. This usually does better than the first option because it also increases the lever-arm of the pitch control surfaces.
Three, you could elongate the tail, increasing the torque-arm of the horizontal stabilizers, which would make the pitch controls much stronger, but also makes for a bigger swing of the tail in the flare when you go to land, which could slam the tail into the ground if you're not careful.
Four, you could add canards-pitch controls on the nose. This would move the centers of lift and pressure forward, and also balance out control for less tail swing. Canards are almost always a good idea in video games with simplistic aerodynamic modeling. In the real world, they create lots of complications for the airstream over the main wings, so are comparatively rare, but are still used at times for easier rotation on takeoff, or just a cool look.
Five, you could use electronic assistance, i.e. fly-by-wire. This makes for by far the nimblest setup, but is very hard to control or even impossible if the computer doing the assisting crashes or is damaged... and in Trailmakers, the logic systems just aren't that good for that kind of stability control. At the very least, you need a basic PID controller, and that is fairly nightmarish to implement with Trailmaker's janky logic system.
its funny how scrap man always says his yaw is garbage when it is literally how a real plane reacts if you yaw, its never going to be just left and right it will add adverse yaw, which means the plane rolls in the direction you yawed in.
In GTA 5 it really just moves you left or right, but it's a video game.
IRL, how do they counteract that rotation? by rotating in the other way by using the wings?
@@johnderat2652 in a real aircraft you never just use the rudder to turn, you first roll the airplane and pitch back slowly, the rudder comes I to play when the nose inevitably drops due to gravity during the turn. So if you want to turn to the left, you roll to the left, pitch up to do a steady turn and add a bit of right rudder to keep the nose from dropping down (to the inside of the turn) .

@@johnderat2652 yes I am, and I'm actually about 2 weeks or less from receiving my private pilot's license. But that isn't the end of my journey, I'm going all the way to become commercialy rated pilot. (Not to be confused with an airline pilot which I'm not going to be) a commercial rating allows me to accept payment for the services of tours and other things like that. As of now I cant accept payment, all i can do is allow the passenger to directly pay the gas pump for my gas.

I've got it. One person has a large flat car, and the other has a smaller car which jumps off a ramp, and has to try and land on the flatter car. Both are moving, so it may be a little tricky, but since you're cars, it should be easier. Maybe have some kinda number rails on the flat car to make it easier?

Another idea - Portable bridge?
You and a partner make two vehidles, one is a deploying bridge vehicle and the other is a simple road vehicle that'll make use of the bridge to get to a normally inaccessable part of the map.
Challenge mod - keep adding weight to the car to find out what the mobile bridge can take. Mod 2 - Make the bridge aquatic and span a river/body of water with it.
Rule - The car must touch both ends of the bridge, so no ramping!
Hell yeah, Fast and furious 9, the best movie of all time!

Here is a great video Idea scrapman...
We have done a lot of stunts in Trailmakers over the last few years (we = me and my friends for those who are confused about the word us) and we created the Forza Horizon 5 beginning where the cars jump out of the plane and land on the ground with parachutes. We used cylinders to make the frame that holds the car in place and used 4 hoverpads stacked on top of each other (20 in total) to make the car slow down its fall towards the planet. our frames broke when hitting the ground (our cars survived and could drive because we used straight suspension) so it would be nice to see you do this with Yzuei and maybe more people as in Forza Horizon 5 you jump with a corvette and a bronco. Maybe you can even make it so that nothing gets destroyed altough these attempts took us way to long so we were happy that our cars at least survived.

OK Scrap, challenge idea - Since you dont want to do any more catching or docking, how about this?
One of you build a flying ring, the other a regular plane, and you have to fly the plane *through* the flying ring. Its not catching or docking, but still requires good control and a steady pair of vehicles.

Mabye a upside down catch? Like anchors or a form of cushion on top so the plane comes from under and catches it. Or for something even harder put a car sized hole in the plane and see if the car can jump through it with minimal damage
Imagine how many attempts it took to do this stunt for the real movie! So many real cars and stunt doubles wasted.
Now that was some real commitment there. I would have given up within the first hour.
It's the best combo: patience&endurance!

Top Gear did it twice where the two cars and welded together on top of each other. The top car is connected to the steering of the bottom car and the bottom car only controls the speed.
Maybe you try that - you each make a car, weld the two together and race it against others or the clock.
Or flip the top and bottom car and see which combo works better

Scrapman used to put more effort into the physics part of this attempts. Now it seems that he is more focused on just creating content than on the challenges themselves... He could have used flaps once he caught the car to generate extra lift and compensate for the weight. Also using yawl is better for the fine tuning of the trajectory once near the jump and he could have used springs behind the magnets and placed them further away from the wings. He already used this tricks on previous episodes so he knows how to put them in practice...

Fast 9 i love that movie
Problem with your plane is that you swapped vetrical stabilizers with wings. Wings have less vertical drag and less control. That caused plane to be unstable and have problems with pitch. Also, that car in a movie wasn't challenger but mustang

This idea is not from a movie, but from a real cold war event: the Operation Azorian, carried by the Glomar Explorer claw salvage ship, It used a claw to try salvaging a drowned Soviet submarine, the real story is actually crazy and It would be worthy of movie material on its own.

Hey Scrapman I think a cool video idea would be to build planes and play STUNT. STUNT is like HORSE or SKATE, You each take turns trying to perform stunts with your planes. When you do a stunt correctly the other player must attempt the stunt. If they do the stun correctly you continue the order trying to do stunts that you think the other can not do on their first try. When the person attempting your stunt can not do the stunt correctly they get a letter from stunt. who ever spells stunt first loses.

something that could have helped was to have the magnets on suspension, to absorb the force of the car hitting them, which seemed to be a major source of damage when grabbing it

I think something that could have helped is a small thruster in the nose of the plane pointed down might have helped with the plane pitching down after catching the car.
I think the main problem was that the plane wasn't heavy enough compared to the car. When the plane's magnet pulled the car up, it was more like the car pulled the plane down. Every time the magnet connects, the plane noses down really quickly.
Also the car had worse aerodynamics than the plane, so it kept slowing and nosing it down even after the initial impact.
"A few tries" me: "more like a few hundred tries"
That was pretty epic yet I'm sure frustrating for you both. Appreciate the dedication to making it work. I personally would have given up and made a bigger plane or smaller car but it wouldn't have looked as cool.

Nicely done! I haven"t seen the movie yet but the stunt is awesome. I think the fix in the big winged plane is that the tail wings must be further from the main wings. Your plane is great, but if you extended the "waist" of the plane a little bit more, the lift will be further in the back thus more pitch control. It doesn't really need more wight or wings. Try to experiment with simple plane build and see. Hope to see more videos like this.
