The creature feature has been dormant for years, twilight was a fad for teen girls to fantasy over, and no one from what I've seen, has actually taken any inspiration from Meyers interuptation of the vampire. Twilight's influence is strictly within the romance genre, and it's not like it came out during a time when vampires or creature features were picking up steam. Talking about the "child" in the store, she wasn't turned there, she came with the vampires, she has tattoos on her arms so clearly wasn't from the town and is probably way older than she looks.
Reminds me of Godrick from True Blood... typically vampires can't get tattoos once they're turned because of their superhealing powers. Marlow (the Vampire Leader) is easily one of the most fascinating characters I've ever seen. We never learn anything about his backstory, but we can tell from the way he speaks that he has been around for hundreds of years. After Bo's failed suicide attempt, Marlow belittles him, saying, "When man meets a force he cannot destroy, he destroys himself instead. What a plague you are." Clearly, Marlow sees Vampires as superior and no longer sees himself as human, however, it also sounds a bit hypocritical to call mankind "a plague" when these Vampires literally cause nothing but death and destruction. Maybe he is a hypocrite. Or, maybe he sees Vampires as better because the havoc they cause is purely motivated by their need to feed, while humans often kill for no reason at all. Even more curious is when he and Iris (his mate) kill that couple in their home. As Marlow holds the man by the throat he tells him, "There is no escape. No hope. Only hunger and pain." This first implies that Marlow has a very bleak outlook on life, possibly both as a human and a Vampire. If you're a human, you're prey. If you're a Vampire, you are cursed with a neverending hunger and possibly some form of pain. The other curious thing about this scene is that Marlow speaks to the man in the Vampire language, knowing that the man probably can't understand him. It makes you wonder why Marlow bothered talking to him or felt the need to do so. It should also be noted that Marlow is hardly ever seen feeding. I can only think of one, maybe two brief instances where we see him feed on someone. He is also the only one who mostly cleans his face and then rubs blood on his head as if it were oil or lotion. I blurted out loud “what a shot” when I saw that scene, a lot of the shots from that same scene made it feel very videogame-esque and that shot was like the cherry on top of a brilliant first action sequence
The vampires in the original comic are supernatural without a doubt. (at one point, a vampire is burned to ash, and is then resurrected by having a little bit of blood splash on the ashes. Some vampires can also teleport) The vampires in the movie may be supernatural as well, but they're made to be far more grounded in order to terrify the audience. Aaaand it worked.
This was a refreshing take on vampires and made them more of the predators that they were and are. No roamce, no angst. More hunter vs prey using nature and their human instincts against them. It was really a breath of fresh air in a vampire horror genre.
Such an underrated movie. I loved everything about the vamps from thier language to the look and how intimidating the lead vamp is throughout the movie
@@A9_Chord It's not the worst sequel, but they recast Stella and Eben's brother never makes an appearance. It's a revenge story and it kinda goes off the fucking rails. It also has a dumb cliffhanger ending. There are some cool scenes, though.
Biggest problems I have with it are because I live in AK and know that half the set up isn’t close to resembling the town in question. Other than that I like it.
When you mentioned that the vamps have a higher internal body temperature, I couldn't help but notice one flaw in that hypothesis. When the vamps shriek or "breathe" outside, would not there be steam coming from their mouths? This leads me to believe that they aren't actually warmer, just that they don't need heat period.
Movie did a good job essentially bringing Templesmith's artwork to life. I'm especially fascinated by these vampires' warped and angular facial features, and the mouth FULL of fangs - not just two unnaturally elongated canines..........................Tho sadly, no rundown of their feet, this time.
It would definitely make a lot more sense for a predatory species that hunts large prey to have a mouth full of sharp teeth. Supernatural also featured vamps with shark-like teeth.
I've been watching vampire movies since I was kid. This IS THE BEST storyline for a vampire movie ever!! Can you imagine...being there or in Northern Norway, and this happening!?! The best!! And oh yeah....creepiest Vampires EVER!!

Same girl same! I watched this with my Deddy in 2007 when I was like 9 years old lmao. And I’ve been watching it nonstop ever since. It’s just so scary and I’m a horror movie fanatic! But this movie is so intriguing because it could really happen in real life. (If vampires were real lol) but the way they hide in the attic and they fight to survive, it’s just so crazy. And in the beginning they don’t even know what’s coming and then they go through so much crap and everyone dies but a few people. And all the creepy music in the beginning and then the creepy music when they set the town on fire and when Denise said “nobody will know what happened. They’ll just think it was some horrible accident.” Wheewww CHILLS. Such a good movie that I never get tired of.
I still think about this film, most definitely in my top 10 horror films of all time. SPOILERS: This also has one of the most effective, emotional and memorable hero deaths ever, the music makes it even better.

This movie has always been one of my favorite vampire movies. They did it so well tbh and using a real situation like month long periods of no daylight is so cool.
What's odd is how it's not an unbeatable urge to feed, in the books one vampire lives with a human "girlfriend" as a smokescreen, he also makes a point of not killing anywhere near where he lives to avoid suspicion. It's seems more likely that the the virus destroys your empathy centres. He dosnt love his girlfriend, she's a useful cover and has no idea what he is, much like how serial killers will sometimes have families to blend in.
This is one of my all time favorite horror movies because the concept is so simple but so brilliant at the same time. It's a shame this movie flew under the radar of a lot of people. Hopefully this video just might clue some people in on this hidden gem of a movie. Excellent video!

I am a student of Biology and focused secondary on Virology. 1) I concur that these vampires are definitely vectors for infection. Literally a handful of them unchallenged could turn a small city in mere weeks into vamps. 2) like zombies, ingestion of blood or biofluids is enough for changing into them. Fingernails and teeth and saliva carry the mode of transmission 3) how fast you turn and if you turn depends on: 1) immune response, 2 general general health, and 3) what caused the infection. A bite to neck and nearly bleeding out would greatly reduce immune system and ability to fight infections. 3) if they have a progenitor, a vaccine or bio weapon can be made. You’ll need the purest samples of DNA. The closest to the progenitor dna as possible. Or a 1 generation under progenitor. When I first watch this film, I knew these were viral. Another good vampire film with a virus type: V-Wars and TV Show: The Passage and The Strain. In 30 Days of Night, I believe they’re a humanoid apex predatory species. Function as packs like wolves but with a purpose and probably have a central government (originals of the species.)

Good game. I thought the first half was stellar, especially the fight with you-know-who. The second half was good, but I felt it lacked focus and it felt a little cloudy. Still worth playing, and I'd like for there to be a sequel.
I remember watching this movie when it first came out and being genuinely scared.......the look of the vampires, the sheer brutality of their kills, the complete lack of empathy for their victims and the thought of being cut off from the world absolutely terrified me......excellent breakdown of the film!

In the comics, it has more of a supernatural aspect In fact, the generations in Alaska were wiped out by the older European generations who saw them as idiots who ran the risk of blowing their veil of secrecy And another thing in the comics, the town in question has become a fort that draws in vamps.
Just to be clear: Barrow is the furthest north city on the North American continent and is incredibly isolated. The way you talk about it makes it seem like there are a ton of other cities that far north and Barrow is just kinda one of them, when it’s one of *very few* “cities” in Alaska north of the Arctic Circle. Most of them are tiny villages. Edit: I’m from Alaska
This is not something i think you will take an interest in, but I was wondering if you would attempt to do an analysis on the Claymores and Youmas of the 'Claymore' series or perhaps the Vampires of the 'Shiki' anime. Regardless I love this movie and it is nice to see it getting some attention once again, personally I find the creepiest part about these vampires is that bizarre language they speak, coupled with their black eyes, and being almost constantly soaked in blood, giving them an almost demonic appearance, their behavior certainly doesn't help lol. Either way, have a great day and stay safe.

I like to think that any vampire who has to stay out of the sun, can survive the reflected light off the moon because it's not "pure" sunlight but "diluted" sunlight.
Technically it could be low enough in uv to not disintegrate the vampire. Alternatively a lot of vampiric lore has vampires capable of walking outside in the daytime, but it just has to be low light times like foggy days or overcast. Which could help explain the moon.

I really liked this idea. Vampires attacking a town in the artic circle while it's constantly dark, and the people have to try and survive for a month. I thought Danny Houston was brilliant as the head vampire. I did think it was Neil tennent of the pet shop boys at first. The ship sailing towards the town in the distance looked like Dracula's castle. There's a lot I liked about it but I think it could have been alot better.
This movie gave me nightmares back in middle school, I remember trying to hide in my nightmares and the main vampire guy would find me Lmao!! . I can't watch it, not because its scary but because the feeling of not hope and no escape is dreadful to think about 😓
Great video! Interesting theory, but I think part of the horror is the mystery. The unknown. Where did the vampires come from? How do they exist? The concept of these vampires existing for thousands of years, possibly as long as humans or perhaps longer, is terrifying. I do love seeing 30 Days of Night get more recognition. It's such an underrated vampire flick. Along with Daybreakers. I love classic vampire lore, but I also love when people add their own twist (except Twilight, none of that lore made sense). Whenever the vampires in 30 Days screeched, it gave me goosebumps. They really made vampires scary again.
Damn, TH-cam's double standards for content creators and advertisers are so infuriating. I see sexually suggestive or bloody ads all the time, and a guy who poured his blood, sweat and tears into a video gets taken down because "blood bad!11!!!1"
It’s crazy because I was just looking at the attack scene. Also they should re-release the movie in the theater since they’re doing that with other old movies and since it’s halloween season.

3:38-3:42 The Woman survives. We see her later enter the diner where the other survivors initially gather and she sticks around for the rest of the film
This was such a cool movie. The setting and atmosphere was perfect! It seemed so damn realistic, like if there was vampires, for sure this shit would happen.
If the heightened metabolism theory is correct which it very much seems to be, then the one thing in the film that appears inconsistent is the fact that: shouldn't the vampires look like they've swallowed a steam train in that cold?
This is helping me in my molecular and cellular biology class (I’m really struggling). You’re way better at explaining how cells work than my own teacher.
This movie is an amazing take on vampires and it makes the legend be grounded on actual science, after watching this movie the concept of a real vampire doesn’t seems as farfetched, it could actually exist and that makes all way more terrifying.
Movie wasn't well received because Vamps got dumbed down in comparison to the comic, but I still liked it a lot even though I'm also the fan of comic series.
As much as I love this movie I hate what they did to vampires in modern times. They always have to be covered in blood because the audience might be too stupid to realise they are vampires and they don't so much sink their fangs into someone as they do just viciously rub their teeth on them.
I said this in the original and I’ll say it again, vampires taking advantage of super long arctic nights is such a brilliant idea.

@@James11111 Why, cause they only bite the attractive people and don't drink the blood from bogger bears???? Come on man. They'd look like most people. In other words, regular to unattractive and when they changed, they'd look horrific. They're monsters. 30 days was a breath a fresh air.
@@warrenbfeagins So they can sneak around and walk among people unnoticed and charm their chosen prey. Dracula himself preferring to turn attractive females. Everyone else he just killed or enthralled.
Once they get aggressive, that's when they get the monstrous look.
Edit: I recently found out that early vampires, such as Dracula and those that came before even him, were meant to be an analogy of abusive romantic partners.
So another reason why they're meant to look attractive.
Praying for you
I personally like vampires of all types. The ones that are bestial monsters & ones that seem charming & beautiful until it's too late.
The shot overlooking the town where the citizens are fighting back is amazing
I know the shotgun dudes were kicking ass to bad they didn't have better weapons
That was a very chilling scene, I thought it was genius to convey how the entire town was in chaos
@@lilscenechick1995
The contrast of blood and snow was also a beautiful cinematic tool and did a wonderful job conveying the scene. Sensory overload in the best ways, you could watch that scene 50 times and see something new
I blurted out loud “what a shot” when I saw that scene, a lot of the shots from that same scene made it feel very videogame-esque and that shot was like the cherry on top of a brilliant first action sequence
The vampires in the original comic are supernatural without a doubt. (at one point, a vampire is burned to ash, and is then resurrected by having a little bit of blood splash on the ashes. Some vampires can also teleport)
The vampires in the movie may be supernatural as well, but they're made to be far more grounded in order to terrify the audience.
The chick who runs away from the oil plant doesn’t die off-screen. She’s basically with the surviving group for the rest of the movie. 😆

You never mentioned that they're never seen in the film making any fog from their breath while breathing/talking. I wonder if that might change your stance on them having a higher body temp?

This movie has always been one of my favorite vampire movies. They did it so well tbh and using a real situation like month long periods of no daylight is so cool.
This movie legit scares me. The vampires are terrifying and the idea of being trapped in darkness is even scarier.

Fingernails and teeth and saliva carry the mode of transmission
3) how fast you turn and if you turn depends on: 1) immune response, 2 general general health, and 3) what caused the infection.
I actually love this movie. There were so many elements that were really well done and created a clever twist on the vampire genre and the two main characters Stella & Eben kicked ass

In the comics, it has more of a supernatural aspect

And another thing in the comics, the town in question has become a fort that draws in vamps.

A man was talking to a vampire at 11 PM
Man: so you disintegrate when you see the sun?
Vampire: yes.
Man: then how do tou survive in the moonlight?
Vampire: what?
Man: the moon is just reflecting off of the sun.
Vampire: ...
Hydrogen One Vampire: Well shit *disintegrats*
I like to think that any vampire who has to stay out of the sun, can survive the reflected light off the moon because it's not "pure" sunlight but "diluted" sunlight.
Technically it could be low enough in uv to not disintegrate the vampire.
Alternatively a lot of vampiric lore has vampires capable of walking outside in the daytime, but it just has to be low light times like foggy days or overcast. Which could help explain the moon.
@@InvaderTak176 Or maybe the concept of vampires dying in sunlight is just some bad pop trope that gained in popularity?
