Who remembers hearing Mutemath perform this song back in 2007 while on tour in support of their first record!? It's amazing how much the song has evolved 11 years later, from a group performance, to a performance by one man. I could not agree with you more.... I have been following Mutemath since it's inception and humble beginnings playing to empty crowds in their baby days. I love this band, the people I have met through their concerts and music.
@@FrostAndTheForest I COULD NOT AGREE MORE! I always felt like MM albums perfectly characterized what I was going through at that time in my life. Amazing.
I'm so torn. On one hand, I'm thankful Paul is keeping MM alive and this recreation of Voice in the Silence is exceptional. At the same time, I remembered hearing them play this song live as a full band back when I saw them in '06 or '07 and I can't help but feel like something is missing. Like the depressing thought that we'll never hear another collaboration between Paul, Darren and Roy ever again. Instead of bringing me pure happiness, now hearing new MuteMath makes me happy but also makes me incredibly sad. Is it just me?
Agree with all of you, been a mute math fan for over a decade, saw them live twice (which was magical.) Paul has been collabing for 21Pilots, but he should continue his own masterpieces again, his talent is beyond 🎉
Paul keeps dropping these things right when I'm at a creative low, and then it gives me that spark I need to get excited to create again. What an inspiration this man is, given the circumstances of this band in the past few years. Keep going, Paul. Mutemath isn't done, not by a long shot. This track is killer.
Paul has mentioned time and time again that Darren King on the drums has been 1/3 of Mutemath's sound, and to expect future Mutemath tracks to fill the gaping hole he left (along with Roy) is asking too much. Play Dead was an excellent album for a band with decades of experience and after the others' departure Paul's initial foray alone in determining what Mutemath is about looked a little lackluster at first -- Props to Hutch, he's more than serviceable, but the dynamic has changed. A lot. That being said I really think this track is truly exceptional. At first it didn't blow my expectations out of the water because the studio solo for "Everything's New" Paul put out a few months before this set such a high bar to clear, maybe because it was the first of firsts. Also, I love trip-hop/chillout, and I felt that he was definitely influenced by Air and other downtempo artists from that era. Additionally, the video distracts from the production, in a good way though, as it showcases his artistry and production). But believe me when I say once I played the fuck out of it on Spotify with the intent to just vibe with it, I appreciated the changes that he made to the original. I like the layers and the mood it imbibes, which lends itself to replayability. It's kind of understated greatness in four minutes. And I'm just happy that it highlights Paul's vocals too, again, not in a in-your-face kind of way. I just want to say thanks for everything, Mr. Meany. I wish more people knew of your talent. Hope you keep the ship sailing, captain, it's a delight to see you're doing so well post-quasi hiatus.
Obviously the song would change given the departure of the rest of the band and the effect time has on a musician's sensibilities....but he went into it a little bit on a live stream a while back. It turns out that the method he used to do this live-looping stuff caused him to need to change how he orchestrated and arranged the songs. Every instrument and phrase has to be introduced in its own moment in the song. That alone dictated how this song would have to be built. It's kind of cool that he was able to do this given all of the different technological and creative constraints.

Love this!!! We are a band of MUTEMATH fans. Please come back to Canada.
Paul Meany, I've been a fan of Mutemath for a long time. You continue to inspire people in new ways by keeping the phenomenon that is Mutemath alive for all of your fans. Even after Darren left, you keep the machine rolling! I salute you, and I hope your music will find it's way to the farthest corners of the universe. -Forever a Mutemath fan!
From a video i stumbled on this song is from like 2007 and they used to gig it, wicked to hear a studio version of it now! Massive!
This is the first I've heard about the new EP--so excited!!
How can I like this more than once?!? Take my money, Paul.
Seriously underrated!!
Wonderful looping creations 🙏
