Shigesato Itoi is sure a truly random guy: worked with copywriting for big companies and Studio Ghibli, wrote short stories with Haruki Murakami and published it in a book, made a cult classic JRPG trilogy, created a bass fishing game and nowadays has a blog where he posts daily. Truly an inspiration.
I just translated a 35 page "making of" about this game by Itoi. It's on the game's Gamefaqs page. Its interesting to read what it was like to make an N64 game back in the 90s. I also translated the manual and hints about how to get all the secret treasures. I hope it is useful!
I also translated the maps that you showed in the video and the bass fishing dictionary at the back of the manual. I'm trying to do this with all the Japanese manuals I can get my hands on in the hope that people can discover some new N64 games.
Thanks for the heart Glenn! I love your channel, keep it up! Watching your videos inspired me to start these translation projects. I hope you can use the material in your future videos! 宜しくお願いします!
This looks like a Japanese exclusive I might pick up. I've already got most of the ntsc_u games that I want cib. I think it's time to move to Japanese games now. The only Japanese game I have so far is fire electric pen. These episodes really open me up to new games, as there's very little info on Japanese games on the internet. Thanks for these episodes Glenn
I really liked a lot of the music I heard in the video also everytime I looked at that frog in the centre of the screen all I could see was Slippy :) Always great to see these Japanese exclusives :) Great vid as always Glenn :)
If it was Slippy there should have been a mini-game where you get to take him out on a boat a la the ending of Godfather 2 ;) "I know it was you Slippy!... and it breaks my heart!" ;)
@@RetroEjitSlippy: "It's always 'Slippy identify the boss's weakness'!." Fox: "We've always looked after you" Slippy: "I'm supposed to look after StarFox!"
As a kid Ive always dreamed of a game like this....the whole small town feel and exploration...kinda of why I liked pokemon!!! and I had a virtual fish like game..the game was built into the fish controller...my brothers and i loved it!!!
Yet another JPN N64 game I've never heard of. I'm not much of a fishing game fan beyond the occasional Sega Bass Fishing play session, but this looks like it's worth trying out.
Link's fishing mini-game was probably inspired by this video-game title; also, I find it fascinating that the rumble pack was based off this quirky/niche Japanese video-game title. 🇺🇸🇯🇵
late to the party, but this game, just aesthetically, looks awesome. It's a shame fishing games haven't seen much creative progression in the west. Recently played some Zombie Fishing on my VMU and the absurdness was awesome.
yeah i do have an ED64 however i like to own the originals for japanese eye episodes as showing off the box etc is all part of the fun for me making this particular episode
I think it needs a HD Remake with mario all stars but looked really nice and awesome, =D i loved Ocarina's fishing and always wanted more, Twilight princess had fishing but was easy forgotten,
I had a japaneese fishing game but it was a top down view. More like an rpg. You had to catch bugs with a net for bait too I think. The fishing part was a 3d underwater view. I have no idea what it was called as it was all in japaneese and very hard to play because of that. Any clue what it was?
The dude who made this game is a visionary. All of the nuances in the booklet pertain mostly to the differences between controllers. Another gem- even though it is not (sealed) lol
I got this game for cheap from Play Asia, can't remember the price though. Didn't actually play it much, didn't understand it. Nice Taka Michinoku theme too !
Golly! Compared to bass masters and bass hunter this look amazing, why wasn't it brought over, it just needed a translation and switch the animal sprites to maybe Mario characters and this would've been great. Also I recently wondered how well a Mario or Zelda themed fishing game would sell, considering how popular Mario sports and the fishing mini games are.
Do you have any contact with Zoinkity? I wonder what it would take to encourage him to work on a translation patch for this game. "Susume! Taisen Puzzle Dama", "Getter Love!", and the Goemon board game are the remaining N64 titles I would love to see translation patches for. I'm guessing the combination of these being fairly niche and somewhat difficult to translate have left them for last, even though they are arguably better titles than most of those already translated.
All news to me - no idea there was an N64 fishing controller. As you say, too much Japanese in this - I always have a thing about missing out on some features with import games and there's a good chance that would happen with this one.
while i prefer real fishing (aka fishing in real life) i can see that they put a lot of effort in this game just by looking at the the depth of the manual in terms of information about how use the controller. Sadly, like most of the text heavy games, you really need to know the language to get the most fun of it
N64 had a fishing controller? N64 had a fishing game? I get bored easily so fishing is not my cup of tea, so don't hate me if I don't know about them. Got to say though I like more the PAL box versions.Nice review
Meh I've never been a huge fishing game fan, I would rather spend my money on real fishing gear, and go catch a real fish, which i did a lot as a kid with my dad, none the less good review :-)
Back in the day my dad forced me to go fishing with him and my god was it boring. Video game fishing is a different story though. I love ocarinas fishing and also played all the breath of fire games mostly just to get to the fishing minigame. This game is good but it somehow feels wrong to play it without the fishing controller. And who the hell owns that thing? Exactly! No one! xD

I love quirky people such as this - they make the world go around 😁

Need this, i have the game and the fishing rod but no idea of japanese, can you send me the translation bro? plz
@@TitoCarl0 I uploaded it to gamefaqs :)

thanks! ill keep making as long as people keep enjoying!

Probably because the game was made by the creator of EarthBound, one of the series that inspired Pokémon.
I never knew the creator of EarthBound made a fishing game. That's cool.
Quite random too hey
Yet another JPN N64 game I've never heard of. I'm not much of a fishing game fan beyond the occasional Sega Bass Fishing play session, but this looks like it's worth trying out.
this seems to have more depth than any sega fishing game, but at the same time its harder to pick up and play
Link's fishing mini-game was probably inspired by this video-game title; also, I find it fascinating that the rumble pack was based off this quirky/niche Japanese video-game title. 🇺🇸🇯🇵
I just bought this game complete from a BOOKOFF store in the USA for $10 its pretty cool, thanks for your video!
not a bad price! how's your Japanese?
late to the party, but this game, just aesthetically, looks awesome. It's a shame fishing games haven't seen much creative progression in the west. Recently played some Zombie Fishing on my VMU and the absurdness was awesome.
ha I've never heard or seen of that! yeah its like why not make an insane fishing game with like crazy sharks and stuff. would be so cool
Ha sharks!!!
With your love of N64 wrestling games, I would really like to see you do Virtual Pro Wrestling/Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 on a future Japanese eye video.
thank you i will try to find them cheap enough to buy!
***** Do you not like to use the everdrive 64 (I thought I remeber you saying you had one) for reviews.
yeah i do have an ED64 however i like to own the originals for japanese eye episodes as showing off the box etc is all part of the fun for me making this particular episode
***** I hear that. The Japanese boxes are usually pretty cool. Well keep up the awesome work man, you rock.
I think it needs a HD Remake with mario all stars but looked really nice and awesome, =D i loved Ocarina's fishing and always wanted more, Twilight princess had fishing but was easy forgotten,
yeah twilight fishing sucked IMO, ocarinas was mint!

Yea that’s river king it’s Japanese only but there’s now an English patch for it

haha yeah its a shame they are never sealed but on the plus side it means that you don't get too afraid of opening them
would love to try out this game with the fishing rod controller
yeah so would i....id really like to find one
The fish and rod looks great 👍🏾
I'm not into bass fishing or fishing games in general usually, but this game could be an exception.
yeah its quirky enough to make it worth playing and you know HAL normally make some cool stuff
I got this game for cheap from Play Asia, can't remember the price though.
Didn't actually play it much, didn't understand it.
Nice Taka Michinoku theme too !
hehe taka is the man! yeah i got this for £6 brand new, always cheap and easy to find is this game
This game looks interesting but I am not really into fishing games but it does look like fun and the characters look very weird great review gleen
its worth a try, maybe emulate it if you don't think its worth buying but you are curious
***** I am definitely curious about it glenn cant wait for the next review my friend ^_^
3:01 personal timecode for me to enjoy funny cat man
haha enjoy!

The music in this review is from its prequel. But is it also in this game?

1:23 these topics (areas) remind me of Animal Crossing logo.
This might sound weird coming from another guy but I like looking at you while you talk, you seem like a really friendly guy. :)
totally get what you mean..but an awkward post indeed.
Characters look like they belong in Paper Mario.
good call!
SimCity 64.

this would have been cool in the US.
i think it would have been cool here in europe too
Personally I'm surprised that Nintendo hasn't made a Mario fishing game yet, It seems obvious, almost too obvious....
yeah he's been in pretty much every other genre of game you can think of!
while i prefer real fishing (aka fishing in real life) i can see that they put a lot of effort in this game just by looking at the the depth of the manual in terms of information about how use the controller. yeah its a shame and i highly doubt we will ever get a patch for english language in this....now i must try to find a fishing controller
Nice! Now, if only I was a fan of fishing...
hehe yeah and if i only owned the fishing controller!
N64 had a fishing controller? N64 had a fishing game? I get bored easily so fishing is not my cup of tea, so don't hate me if I don't know about them. Got to say though I like more the PAL box versions.Nice review
yeah n64 had a few fishing games actually and most were released here in the west!
Well as I said I tend to get bored with this type of games so I never bothered ..(I also get bored in real life so I never go fishing)

Who needs this when you can fish in Ocarina? :P
