Alsace Lorraine Railway Streamlined S14 engine 1325

The French locomotive designer André Huet was an inventor of a new form of Streamlining in what he referred to as being the “diverter fairing” with the idea being that regular maintenance could be easily accessible with its open form.
In 1936 locomotive 1325 was the only locomotive of the Chemins de fer d'Alsace et de Lorraine Class S14 that then received a “André Huet” type fairing (carénage) which was an open design for ease of maintenance, the locomotive as pictured in 1936 strangely featured the SNCF logos on either side of the locomotive but the SNCF was not created until 1938. In 1938 during the creation of the SNCF locomotive 1325 was renumbered to SNCF 231.B.325
The French were studying streamlining of their locomotives in depth by carrying out a whole series of wind tunnel tests at the Saint-Cyr-l'École Aerodynamic Institute in order to compare the Pottier “Full fairing” on locomotive 230 590DD against the André Huet partial fairing (known as the “diverter fairing”), “surprisingly” this resulted in a slight advantage for the Huet design over the Full fairing design of Pottier either in calm winds or in headwinds, diverter fairing is today also used on modern F1 race cars so clearly it must work well.
André Huet tested his innovative diverter fairing ideas with locomotive 13125 of the Alsace-Lorraine railways in 1936. The following years he designed the diverter fairing on locomotives 230-800 and also on several other French locomotives such as the 231.C-71, 231.H.141, then he created the diverter fairing on the famous SNCB Type 12 for the Belgian railways, six examples were built of this class with his diverter fairings.
