And if you've never heard those words together...well...Hello! Today I'd like to talk to you about this late Medieval English headdress, and how I made my own!
A ton of medieval English art was systematically destroyed. Because of this, I had to look to brass memorial plates as one of the key sources for this project. They're pretty cool in their own right!
My construction methods are cough pretty historically inaccurate but I do my best to get the facts right! Any corrections will be posted below.

I keep imagining an English mother and daughter arguing about the length of the hat's antenna.

Even now, tiara bases are wrapped in velvet (brown or blonde, depending on the wearer's hair colour) to help keep them in place.

From the funerary images, I wouldn't have thought the headpiece would be so flattering and elegant. However, your end product was very feminine and flowing and pretty and I thought the term butterfly apt as when you moved it did resemble butterfly wings. Absolutely magnificent job done - I'm so impressed 😊
I had to come back and leave a befuddled question as to how I possibly missed the wire loop peeking out from all the medieval pictures? Did I just happen to never look at even one painting with that detail included? Unlikely. Are they such a small detail it's hard to pick out? Well, now I see them I can't miss them, so no. Well, for whatever reason it took me your video to even begin to understand exactly how much was going on up top which needed to be anchored - and then to understand that all those hats in the paintings must have included the loop otherwise the whole shebang would have just fallen off.
"a little lumpy and not strictly symmetrical" is exactly the medieval style

I don’t know if you’ve tried stiffening the silk with gelatine? It’s less chunky. You can stick the fabric to a window (or a flat surface) to dry, for less ironing.

Wonder too if the hennin was influenced a bit by the Romans who had traveled to Egypt, where there was evidence of royals with elongated skulls. Sort of a stretch, but then we recall what influenced the entire bustle trend. Hi Kim Kardashian. 😊

I wonder if the more cylindrical Hennins are descended or recreated in the style of, older womens headdresses. As I understand it, cylindrical hats with veils off the back were a common womans style after the romanization of Gaul and other Celtic areas.
Can't find much surviving from the period but there are some depictions in sculpture. Particularly a quick search showed me the "Bust of a Norican Woman with a Modius Cap, from Wölfnitz-Lendorf in the Austrian region of Carinthia. Weirdly checking the Modius style headdress and its most common in greco-roman art of Egyptians, such as the famous jar hat of the synchronized god Serapis. Perhaps to the Greeks and romans one cylindrical hat was the same as another.

the most refreshing thing about pre-industrial everything is it was all one-of-a-kind... every single one of these hennins likely had the individual's practicality, ambition, resourcefulness, etc etc etc, baked into each one - such that, unlike items of the industrial period, which don't exist if they don't have VERY strict instructions and an ISO # to feign quality or legitimacy...or the unique authenticity of the automaton that sewn'd it in bangledesh... (bangledesh makes some nice fabrics these days and it;s diverse and affordable; i mean, hamtramck is just full of bangledeshis with looms back home and mad deals on hammocks... personally, i like linen and jute. amen. text text text. )
