Also, when he was awarded the Knight's Cross late in the war He was allowed to leave his unit and take a train home to Austria for a week of leave. He set his rifle against the wall, ate dinner with his family and made little mention of the dire situation on the Eastern Front. He helped his Father build cabinets in the carpentry shop for a few of those days. Then He put his gun over his shoulder, boarded the train and went back to the front. He spent the next months helping his beleaguered comrades begin their hellish retreat toward Germany.
" There were single operators, sniper and observer pairs, sniper pairs and companies up to sixty strong" Sepp Allerberger Memoirs after him and his troops wiped out a company of Russian female snipers who were shooting from a forest in the trees. The shot well but didn't practice field craft so the veteran Sniper was able to kill them.
According to Sepp's memoir, the three tanks fired a few shells at the town, then withdrew as the commander of the three tanks was the likely casualty. Throwing them into disarray, the tanks withdrew for the day. Sepp slowly maneuvered to reposition and the town stayed in German hands that day with the main defending troops and anti-tank defenses of his regiment.
@@benmurphy7934agreed. I read vasilly zeightsevs autobiography first then Sepps. It provided a really interesting contrast. Would highly recommend reading both back to back!
Reading his book right now, you only get "official" credit for confirmed kills if an officer/observer verify them. I think many veterans sniper numbers on all sides true numbers are probably double, triple maybe more what is recorded. Edit: Thank you for posting this video, its alot more clear about the umbrella thing with picture/video than me just imagining it. 👍
He fought the female snipers prior to marksman school and spoke about the experience during a training video developed by the Soviets in 1935. - source: his autobiography
Great video! Hard to think of something scarier in war than a sniper!
If you can get a copy of the book about him it is also good read.
Having a Tank aiming its main armament at you ,when you are a foot soldier ,and wondering if its going to fire would be Scary

He didn't get the knights cross till after that trip home after sniper school
All his kills had to be confirmed by a spotter. The soviets often did not use spotters.

Good video. But what happened with him and those tanks that you mentioned in the beginning of the video?

Sniping is physically punishing & the mental focus is intense.
It's nothing like anything Hollywood presents.
Field craft is a term I learned reading Sepp Allerberger Memoirs.
Sniping along with Field Craft.

Fantastic book, brilliant read highly recommended 👌
The audio book is available on a couple of youtube channels. It's fascinating but very graphic and gruesome.
