    Just a thought for a future project… I read “The Forgotten Soldier” by Guy Sajer a few years back. The story of a young French soldier serving with the Grossdeutschland Division on the eastern front. A captivating read.

    i bought myself a kar 98 set up with an original scope because of this book.Being behind one of those old guns gives you a great understanding for how hard it realyl was to be a sniper.

    Excellent story- my grandfather was a motor cycle driver and died in Berlin shortly before the Russians over-ran Berlin. His last name was Heide. I would really like to learn more about him but everyone has long since passed away. In addition and what is most astonishing is that my other grandfather's(Franz Reimers) brother- Heinrich Reimers was the tank driver for Wittmann and died with him in France. I will definitely keep watching your episodes-

    The frank and relaxed narration belies the mind boggling horror it describes.
    That some were nevertheless alive at the end, and presumably carried on living in the post war settlement is a kind of super human achievement for which I feel great respect.
    Now I must pause awhile, some days maybe a week, till I can listen to the next story with a little composure.

    Another very interesting episode. I was a tank soldier with a gift for hitting what I aimed at. Because of this I was issued with a Lee Enfield Nr 4T (manufactured in 1944 and kept in store) I was the first to use it and it came with a 1918 Springfield sling. which was so good and much better than a normal issue rifle sling :-)
    ---------
    I was sent to the School Of Infantry in Sennelager (1975) and went through the sniper training course alongside other British Infantry, but did not do the second part which was crawling around on the ground trying to be invisible, I only did the shooting phase and soon after received more training in Close Quarters Battle movement with an automatic 9mm pistol. Then returned to my unit in Bergen-Hohne.
    This was because I had been chosen as the Regiments Commanding Officer's ''bodyguard'' for whenever we were sent to Northern Ireland where the UK had a terrorist problem during the 1970's and 80's. 🙂
    I still miss that Lee Enfield 🙂

    TY 🙏🙏 Desperate fighting! After Kursk, whatever the Axis do, the Soviets just move forward, even with river barriers. The Axis never build a proper defensive line. The Soviets use their improved training, equipment, mobility & numbers to great effect, which gains momentum, as Axis quality declines, & reserves are also pulled back to defend Italy/France.
    Q's
    - What countries/locations are you planning to visit & what is your interest in those places?
    - How do you think the Axis could have improved their performance in WW2?
    - How 'lucky' do you think the German Army was in the early war years, which enhanced it's reputation, perhaps too much, which gave the Germans a false sense of superiority/capability?

    • @TrenchDiaries
      @TrenchDiaries  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      After a certain point it was extremely hard for the Axis powers to succeed, since the overwhelming superiority in men and material was hard to overcome. Your questions are noted 😎

    The ballistic advantage of a sniper is that he can take out enemy troops at ranges beyond they can fire back at him. It seems all or most of his kills were at very close ranges. These were well within the range of the average rifleman. So was he really a sniper? 600+ yards is where the real sniper starts to work.

    • @tavish4699
      @tavish4699 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      bullshit, you obviously have no idea about the technical aspect of ww2 snipers
      i have a kar98 set up like the one he has in real life
      it has a 4 times scope which you cannot zoom in or out, you can only lift the reticle up and down without ever knowing how much you actually lifted it there is no zeroing this gun
      you cannot shift it horizontaly either
      what they did was zero it at 100 meters and through experiece they knew how much they rougly had to hold over the target to hit at above 100 meters
      the reticle is very fat as well, good luck seing your target at more than 400 m
      also your entire thought process is wrong, the snipers of ww2 never operated out of the enemies range, a rifle can shoot well over 3 kilometers whilst still being somewhat in the area where you wanted to shoot, a sniper was never out of range of supresive or concentrated fire by the enemy, including machine guns btw!
      the point of the snipers was that they could shoot a man poking his head over the trench, could hunt down enemy artillery observers that would sit alone in some place with a radio and direct artillery
      they could identifly officers and machinegunners as they are priority targets, being under fire by sniper for days also has great effect on the troops morale as you cant even go for a shit without fearing you will die, the result is to poop in a can and throw it over the trench which will start to stink eventually
      you completely missed the point of snipers in ww2 and look at it from a todays point of view

      In some of the books that I have read of snipers personal accounts, they talk of using the M4, when. in some settings if the enemy is close , they use iron sights. Because looking through the telescopic sights blocks out their peripheral vision , so not good to use when in contact at shorter distances, so a lot of snipers got many kills from 200 metres or less.with an M4
