Nattokinase and the heart

  • Natto is a cheese- like food which is made of soybeans which have been fermented with a bacterium called Bacillus Subtilis. Natto has been consumed as a traditional food in Asian countries for several thousand years and Natto consumption is believed to be a significant contributor to the longevity of the japanese.
For a long time, it was not very clear to scientists as to why Natto consumption was linked with good cardiovascular health. In 1987, there was a breakthrough when it was discovered that Natto contained a potent enzyme called Nattokinase and perhaps it was the Nattokinase in the Natto that was responsible for the benefits seen. Incidentally Natto is also a very good source of vitamin K2 and I have recently done a video on the benefits of Vit K2 on heart health. The dose of Nattokinase is measured in FU - fibrinolytic units. 50g of Natto has about 1500 FU of nattokinase in it.
There have been many experiments done to study the benefits of Nattokinase but most of these have been done in test-tubes and animals (rats). There have been very few studies done in human beings and this is why one has to be very careful in assuming that all the benefits that have been purported in lab studies could also apply to humans. In any case, I will share what we know about Nattokinase so far.

I was forced to find an alternative to blood thinners including aspirin after I had open heart surgery at the age of 42 because I was severely allergic to them. Three cardiologists only gave me 5 years to live because of my genetics. Thankfully, I discovered Nattokinase, and 18 years later, I’m still alive!

      Hi,
I have been taking between 4,000 and 6,000 FU ever since my surgery. Dr. Stephen Sinatra says to take:
      2,000 FU daily for prevention
4,000 FU daily for heart attack prevention
      6,000 FU for stroke prevention

I love how the last study mentioned (at 12:15), which showed no advantage to Nattokinase, was done with a LOWER dosage than the studies which DID show an advantage. That's what drug companies do all the time! They can't patent Nattokinase, so they lower the dose so it appears ineffective.

As a Japanese person who grew up eating natto very frequently as a child (and as an adult), it is interesting to see that non-Japanese people are getting interested in health benefits of natto (and nattokinase) that we have been eating daily for centuries.

My personal experience with nattokinase and lumbrokinase is remarkable. In October 2020 my echocardiogram revealed an ejection fraction of 20%. Nine months later after taking D3 10,000 iu plus 360 mcg K2 MK7 as well as nattokinase daily my EF is 55+%. My cardiologist originally stated that the low EF was from plaquing in my arteries and could not be reversed, only managed, and suggested a defibrillator and PCSK9 injections (total cholesterol 204) . I rejected both. I am homozygous for the MTHFR c677t variant and have elevated Lp(a) both contributing to excessive plaquing. Note: I had 7 bypasses in 2010 and much of the plaquing was in those areas. I continue the aforementioned regimen along with many other supplements such as pomegranate extract (Rejuna arjuna 10:1 , oligomeric proanthocyanidins, hawthorn extract, Ubiquinol 200 mg, selenium 200 mcg, Magnesium citrate, oxide 500 mg, Life Extension olive oil and Carlson's lemon flavored cod liver oil. I try to avoid sugar, grains, vegetable (seed oils) that cause inflammation in the body especially the endothelium of the arteries. I am 70 years old and have near perfect numbers on all my labs and echo. None of these protocols have the endorsement of the pharma but anecdotal results speak volumes. None of the above info should be considered medical advice just sharing my personal experiences. Informative video doctor, thanks.

Immunofluorescence analysis showed that S protein on the cell surface was degraded when nattokinase was added to the culture medium. Thus, our findings suggest that nattokinase exhibits potential for the inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 infection via S protein degradation.”

I have been consuming natto for just over 5 years and believe that it is my "magic bullet". I am a 64 yr old female with a strong history of heart disease, stroke and thrombosis from my father's family. When I was in my 50's, while walking slightly uphill, I would feel a twinge in the middle of my chest and could barely talk while walking. After I began consuming natto, I noticed while walking the same path, I no longer feel any discomfort and don't breathe hard at all. I now do aerobics 4-5x each week and feel great.I eat about 1/3 cup of natto 3x per week.Because natto is difficult to find in my area, I have learned to make it at home.I believe that we have a loving Creator who has given each culture/continent on earth foods and herbs that are good for our health such as natto, olive oil, pomegranate juice, salmon, etc. Thank Dr., for your videos!

Thank you Dr Gupta for your ALWAYS informative videos. This one struck home. As a pharmacist, I've seen what the Big Pharma drugs can do concerning side effects and have been interested in nutritional alternatives. Approximately 14 years ago I had a bout of AFIB. The cardiologist put me on a Calcium channel blocker and Coumadin. I took this for over 2 years until I told my physician, I've had it with Coumadin and the testing. He advised taking a regular strength aspirin and continuing with the Calcium channel blocker. I did so for a few months then heard of a medical physician who was also a nutritional physician, Dr Jim Howe, now deceased, who on a whim, I emailed. He was gracious to respond and being in the medical field he went through the nutritional alternatives for Afib. One being Taurine and the other nattokinase. I weaned off the calcium channel blocker and stopped the aspirin and started the Taurine and Nattokinase regimen. I've been controlled for over 14 years with not one episode of AFIB. I'm not advising anyone to take this regimen or decrease their meds. I closely monitored myself for blood pressure and used Kardia Mobile for EKG monitoring and an oxygen pulse monitor. I don't know if I would have jumped so fast with the nutritional supplements if Eliquis or the newer anticoagulants were available at the time, but I knew I didn't want to stay on Coumadin. To date, and now in my 70's, I'm still on Taurine twice a day and Nattokinase twice a day, and no other medications
Many thanks again for the time you spend creating these informative videos.

Of course my comment is anecdotal and is certainly an “n of 1”, but here it is. I first heard about Nattokinase from my father-in-law who was struggling terribly with frequent TIA’s even though he was on so much warfarin that his arms were purple and he had bloody stool. I should also note that, while on warfarin, he experienced a hemorrhage in his eye and lost vision in that eye, permanently. We all noticed that, in a short period of time after his loss of vision, his arms cleared up and he stopped having TIA’s. I took him to a doctor appointment one day where he admitted that he had stopped taking warfarin and begun to take Nattokinase several months earlier after the loss of his eyesight. The doctor was furious and dropped him as a patient that day. He continued to take Nattokinase for the remainder of his life, ten more years, and never had another TIA. He died 10 days after a serious fall on the stairs, where he broke several bones, not due to a cardiovascular condition or stroke. I’m glad you were open enough to make this video. Best to you.

Very informative. Here is a summary of my experience so far, sorry for the word count but I tried to keep it short. I tried to make an appointment with my GP regarding chest pain/neck/left arm and palpitations with a very low heart rate (resting 45bpm, 52 yr old smoker). I was seen after a wait of 3 weeks, then asked to attend for an ECG and blood test a week later. A week after I contact my surgery and they said if there was concern the doctor would contact me. I discovered an alert from my apple device my pulse was 38 bpm for over 10 minutes. I contacted 111 who arranged for a Dr consultation. The doctor advised I needed to see my GP and booked me an appointment the following morning. The GP called and told me my Heart was fine, the resting rate was fine. My bloods were perfect and cholesterol amazing (keto diet). I had a follow up booked for the Tuesday after the Whitsun bank holiday face to face so attended to try and find out if and why everything was healthy, I had chest pains? I then saw my ECG (work in NHS IT so was used to seeing ECG's as I fixed the machines). I asked the DR (who was a locum) to explain the dramatic drops in the p-wave and the following weak pulses that follow, and did they think I had a Heart attak as the top of the ECG said possible historical myocardial infarction. I had not experienced a heart attack and never had a history of heart problems. I was then refered for a Holtor monitor. However due to the shear volume of cardiac patients the wait was three weeks (get it fitted for 24 hrs on 19-6-23) then by the time the results go back to the hospital, then to my GP, then me.... Then possible referal for an echocariogram or the CT scan to look for a clot or embollism. whilst only being given Aspirin and GTN spray got me scared after a week of repeated chest pains and uses of the GTN (which caused the worst banging head/neck pain). I started taking nattokinase a week ago tomorrow. 3 hours after taking I was able to respirate properly. I felt a my chest flutter and yawned for 5 minutes. No pain that night. I have been taking 8000 FU a day since. I have used the GTN spray twice since and none for the last 48 hours. My resting pulse is up from 45 bp to 61bpm. I generally feel much healthier. I am still getting all of the stuff checked out.

Hi Sanjay, I make Natto using an Instant pot and black turtle beans sourced from Tesco here in the UK. I use a natto starter kit purchased off of Amazon. The beans take about 24 hours to fully ferment in the instant pot and yes I have noticed a slight enhancement both cognitive and cardiovascular
also I have experienced hyperglycaemia previous to incorporate natto into my diet and I can say that the Natto I make reduces my post-prandial blood glucose levels by as much as 20%, on average I eat about 100 g of the stuff between three and five times a week and I season the natto with nutritional yeast and a little sea salt.
I thought it would be useful to share this information in the comments section as I would've found it useful about one year ago when I was looking to incorporate Nattokinase into my diet and was looking for the best way to do so, it's actually very easy to make Natto at home. It's far better to get nutrients from dietary sources when and where ever possible for obvious reasons for the bio active substances we get from Whole Foods work synergistically and thus it makes all the difference to be getting them synergistically from Whole Foods and not a single nutrient from a bottle.

@@roselynjakin5804 Hello Roselyn, I hope this summary helps you understand the process: How I make natto using an instant pot
So some years ago, I made natto with chickpeas, which I boiled in a pot of water and then mixed with natto starter powder in a Pyrex dish. I covered the dish with a tea towel and put it in a preheated oven at about 40°C. This method gave me mixed results, so I stopped making natto.
Ten years later, I wanted to make natto again, so I did some research to find a simpler and more consistent way. I learned that natto was easy to make with an instant pot. I have a 5.7 L instant pot that I bought on Amazon for about £80. I use black turtle beans that come in 500 g bags (dry weight).
I rinse and drain the beans in a stainless steel colander, then add five parts water to one part beans in the instant pot. The water should cover the beans by about 1 inch. I cook the beans on high pressure for 17 minutes and let them cool for another seven minutes before releasing the pressure.
The timing is important, as it depends on the season and quality of the beans. The beans should keep their skin intact after rinsing and cooking. If I change the cooking or cooling time by even one minute, I get different results. I buy my beans in bulk, hoping they have the same use-by date, which means they were probably grown in the same season. This way, the numbers that I worked out by trial and error will suit all of the beans that I bought.
After cooking and cooling, I drain the beans over a sieve, keeping a small amount of moisture. I add the natto starter powder and mix well. I put a paper towel over the beans and place the lid back on the instant pot. I set the valve to open to allow oxygen to reach the bacteria. I leave the instant pot on the yoghurt making setting for 24 hours for the fermentation process to take place.
It’s very important that all utensils are sterilised with boiling water so as not to ferment any unfriendly bacteria that can seriously harm your health. A good indication of the presence of unfriendly bacteria is the smell test. If the natto does not smell right, if it doesn’t smell stinky and cheesy but instead pooie for instance, this can indicate that other bacteria have entered the mix and have been fermenting besides the natto bacteria.
I find it so much easier faster and more consistent to use an instant pot and would highly recommend it. I hope this helped
      Yours sincerely John.

I was diagnosed with Pericarditis post my first Phizer dose. It's been 18months now and not fully better. The first 12 months were horrid.
I experimented with Nattokinase after extended Colchicine use and other NSAIDs started causing liver hepatotoxicity.
The only side effect I found from Nattokinase was my irritation levels increased dramatically when I started upping the dose. I'm off it now, but still pop the odd one here and there. I believe it was effective at suppressing or curing whatever was going on with me internally when I was taking it regularly at the time.
I know it's only subjective, but this was my experience. And after months of NSAIDs, colchicine and steroids I finally started looking elsewhere.
I was very pro-science before all this happened. I still am, but just as the good Doctor basically said, "Pharma companies control/fund the studies". Interesting topic, thank you! I discovered natto about four years ago and came to appreciate the taste after quite a short time.
In my family irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease is present, I also used to suffer, under stress, great problems with abdominal cramps, sudden diarrhea and just constant malaise.
I do an annual blood check at my family doctor and there were times when I had too low iron levels, slightly elevated inflammation levels and also elevated liver levels.
And maybe it's because of other dietary changes I made in the past, but my blood levels have been really good over the last three years. At the last check, my doctor was quite fascinated to see my liver results so low/ good. She put it down to the fact that I don't drink alcohol at all, but I think foods like natto or kimchi, maybe fermented foods in general, have a part in that, too.
all in all it's an incredibly delicious addition to my diet and I wouldn't want to miss it anymore.

I didn't find too much information on it but was interested in it because it is a blood thinner that can be taken without a prescription but be that as it may you have to be careful because even natural things can cause harm and you have to know exactly how much to take and I never found that out exactly. I take Xarelto because I have atrial fibrillation and on top of that I have diastolic congestive heart failure. Although I'm managing quite well and I've had the diastolic congestive heart failure since 2013. It's odd though because my ankles in my feet do not swell at all. I've been taking Nattokinase for just under 3 months (24,000 FUs). My dangerously high blood pressure has come down to 124/78, my triglycerides dropped 122 points. My LDL has only come down 5 points, my cholesterol is down 27 points, and my HDL has gone up 2 points. At the same time, I switched to a mostly carnivore diet with a few cheats such as mixed nuts, cheddar cheese, sugar in my coffee (slowly reducing the amount to retrain my taste buds), and when I just have to have something sweet I nibble on a few dark chocolate chips. No bread. No seed or veg. oils. No fruit or juice. Once a month I let myself have a veggie like lima beans drowning in butter or a small dinner salad. I've lost 13 lbs so far. I'm a disabled person with limited activity (bad back and knee and hip issues). I also take cod liver oil and flaxseed oil, magnesium, MSM, and once a week I take DHEA. My goal was to lose 40 lbs. Only 27 lbs to go! And I don't even feel like I'm dieting because I can eat as much BACON as I want (which I cut into 1" squares and cook in my air-fryer until crispy and then snack on the "bacon chips" when I want something salty/crunchy). Oh, and I fast a minimum of 12 hours per day (sleep time counts!).

Hey there! A friend of mine suggested Nattokinase after I had a terrible migraine flare. Typically I suffer from menstrual migraines that leave me with stroke-like symptoms. Visual auras that blind me. Slurred speech. Weakness in my arms. The difficult thing to understand is the root problem - I’ll never know because sadly, no studies have been done on my brain during these episodes. However, I have taken 6,000FU of Natto for the last 2 menstrual cycles and remarkably my symptoms have improved ten fold! It’s hard to explain in words how blessed I’ve been in taking this supplement. I truly believe it has changed my life and my cognitive function - now if I could just get rid of this cell phone that I stare at all day 🙃

I did also and never heard about anyone having the same symptoms as I did, (meaning especially the horrific migraines), although many had awful pain and cramps, (which I did too). 😢
Later in life, I discovered the Atkins diet and read his books.
In his original version of the diet, he said it needed to be 72% fat and a certain amount of protein and very little carbs.
This was prob what would be called ketogenic now.
But that is what completely stopped the menstrual pain and cramping, etc and related problems.
High fat with adequate protein (and definitely no grains), was truly awesome!

Hello Dr., I hope and pray that all is well with you and yours! I have been following your channel for 2 1/2 years or so And I am very glad to see that you are now aware of nattokinase And vitamin K2 And there potential benefits in helping cardiovascular patients in particular calcification of the arteries, of which, I as a citizen of the US am currently dealing with along with so many others in the US.
I always enjoy your perspectives, analysis and detailed, cautious explanations of the subject at hand.
When looking at the potential benefits of vitamin K2, natto and nattokinase, you state that the current research on these natural substances is lacking, in specific, "large, extensive human trials".
I respectively beg to differ Dr! If you're looking for extensive human trials and evidence, look at the entire population of Japan where "natto" is consumed on a regular basis and they have extremely low CVD compared to western cultures!
Western diets are grossly deficient in REAL, sugar-free fermented foods and grass-fed meat and poltry which as you stated puts us in a vitamin K2 deficient state.
Japan has an excellent mass population of living breathing human subjects who consume Natto (nattokinase) and other fermented foods and the data and statistics to go along with its benefits!
The "West" (in particular, Big Pharma and Big Agriculture) is not interested in a healthy population because the whole system is profit driven, not health driven. The "West" will NEVER conduct the necessary trials that would provide the much needed evidence that a simple, natural food substance is much better than their expensive pharmaceuticals drugs. They're not willing to sacrifice billions and trillions of dollars in drug profits no matter how many lives it would save!
Please reach out to Japan's medical establishment for the data you seek. We need more doctors like you to step out of the confines of western medicine and take Healthcare away from these greedy so-called health corporations...

I currently have critical Aortic Stenosis and am in the pre-op phase. I was diagnosed on February 14. I had read before about the benefits of natto. But I did not have access to any until 2 months ago. I eat natto on toast most mornings for breakfast.(6 times a week) My blood pressure has dropped 15 points on the systolic and 5 on the diastolic. I have few bouts of fainting. But that can be due to the fact that I have learned what it feels like before I pass out. My Aortic valve area has increased slightly from .3 mm2 to .44 mm2. The mean gradient reduced from 98 mmHg to 91 mmHg. Velocity went from 5.8 m/s to 4.9 m/s. The ejection fraction for both was 65%. They were done 38 days apart. That all could be the difference in the clinician and interpretation. I feel significantly better most days. I feel it's definitely worth a try. But I agree more research needs to be done.

Go and get the operation because out is the quick and reliable way of solving the problem and not dying and getting your full functionality back as well. Suggest choosing a bio replacement valve so you don’t need the blood thinners. Don’t be afraid of having a median sternotomy - it gets better quickly in my experience!

@@lorrainemullins6181 I am in the pre operative testing phase and am awaiting my surgery date. It's just taking a long time. I'm eating the natto in hopes my valve doesn't get more tight in the meantime.I am also hoping it may have some effect of preventing calcification of my new valve. Thanks for your concern.

Thank you for the video as I have recently started taking this within the past month after reading so much about it.. Before watching I thought that would probably be your analysis being there just is not hard data to back up the benefits you read about.. I assume the main thing is as long as it is safe to consume it can't hurt to give it a try.

There exists a large population of natto eaters readily available in Japan to do retrospective studies compared to non natto eaters.... Wouldn't this solve the cohort problem? It is always good to see you, Dr.! Thank you for your channel.

There have been many studies like this. But results from these natto studies could be from Mk-7 (vitamin K2), which is also very important for heart health. Natto has the highest concentration of Mk-7 of any food on earth by far. So natto studies wouldn't exactly point to nattokinase, but more likely to Mk-7. Straight (extracted) nattokinase studies must be done.

I think we can all surmise the outcome of that study, if it ever were to happen. It’s common knowledge that Japanese and Asian people in general, live a much longer and healthier life than us westerners, despite the fact that a lot of the food they eat is fried. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Since most studies are funded by pharmaceutical companies, there is only money to be lost by studying and validating a simple, cheap, natural and readily available food can be used instead of an expensive pharmaceutical for improved health.

@@yoyo21926 It makes sense the food Natto has this enzyme because it does have very high amounts of Mk-7. For balance as you say.
But the point I was making, was that studies on the food Natto, would more likely point to the benefits of Mk-7 than it would nattokinase. In studies looking at heart health.

I've been taking Nattokinase, since Dr. Sinatra recommend it in his 2007 book "Reverse Heart Disease Now! In addition to K2 with Mk7. After 3 heart attacks, five stents, back in the mid 2000's. I've been going strong ! Highly recommend it for heart health.

Used commonly throughout Germany for maintenance of youthful, healthy skin, hair and nails. Silicea Gel can be used externally for wrinkles, acne and blemishes or internally helping to replenish collagen supply and encourage skin elasticity. An excellent choice for those who are concerned with brittle nails, thin hair and prematurely aging skin.

I started eating natto about a month ago. Initially I tried it because the health evidence for helping with cardiovascular and bone health. After about 10 days of eating Natto from suppliers in the USA I found some videos on making natto in an insta pot, so I tried to make it last weekend. I found it very easy to make and really enjoyed making a batch of chickpea natto. It came out perfectly and I’ve been eating it daily all week. I’m really enjoying the natto and cannot wait to buy some soybeans and make some soybean natto. I posted a video on my channel of a clip showing my first batch of natto. So happy to have discovered this food. I’m sure it will do wonders for my health. Now if only to get the wife and kids onto this food. So far they haven’t shared my enthusiasm.
