  • I've got another scrap yard engine to replace the one I had in the car as the oil cooler had gone. I started it up after a few weeks of sitting and it couldn't suck up any oil and started to rod knock.....
my fault, I shouldn't have walked away from it after starting up.
anyway, I tear down this engine to replace gaskets and ancillarys. not going into any internal components as this was a good quiet running engine, just suffered the same oil cooler failure that left the oil a tad milkey.....
I've split it into 2 parts as when I was editing it started to become a tad long....

Be pretty of clearance there not much lift on the VVC cams, can run Piper 285's with a refaced head and SLS gasket all tho bet that head face is soft as 😅

Hello, I really like your videos, keep it up!
I have an engine like this mounted on my Lotus and it also has this oil cooler. How many problems does this radiator give?
Is it worth removing it and putting a normal air / oil radiator?

      Thankyou.
The best option really is an oil to air cooler with a thermostatic sandwich plate. All these oil to water coolers are getting on a bit now in age and are no longer available.

Great series of videos! Gotta ask is the stainless steel a custom item, or is it off the shelf? Didn’t think the off the shelf item was suitable for the 160. Ta!

      Thanks 😁
Yes the Stainless pipes off the shelf are available for 160 and non 160

Very interesting video, Im just about to strip and rebuild a 1.8 VVC myself and have never touched a K series before. I'm still a bit confused about head gasket selection, I thought that the multi layer steel gaskets were the most reliable?

Measure the liner height against the block, best way is with a dial gauge and measure each liner. Easiest way is use a straight edge and use a feeler gauge.
3-5 thou along as the liners are all the same height then use the mls gasket. If they are uneven or below 3 thou then use the elastomer gasket. If your liners are below the block face then you will need to shim them.
      Hope this helps.....

Great video. I’m curious - how did you remove the gasket locating dowels? I’m halfway through a rebuild on a non-VVC engine and I’ve buggered mine up trying to remove and replace them so I’ve not been able to progress any further for now 🤦🏻‍♂️

They can be tricky, normally a pair of mole grips but sometimes require a bearing puller or dowel remover tool.

@@gregoryelgood yeah - I’ve been trying mole grips but they aren’t budging and are now distorted :-/. I’ll have to look into a puller of some description. I should have just left them alone!

@@Jimbobsgarage to be fair, if they are the upgraded ones already fitted and they are not damaged, I leave them alone.

@@gregoryelgood I wish I had - they’re a bit too damaged from me struggling to pull them with mole grips to leave them now 😢
