    SM really train their singers well, that's all I can say

    • @resurgingflame
      @resurgingflame 7 ปีที่แล้ว +81

      jesus rivera ehh not really. Jessica was trained for main vocal & the longest trainee too among SNSD & yet her gap is far away from Taeyeon.
      Changmin is also one of the main vocal & yet he's a really weak vocalist than what people would think of about him.
      Yesung too. Besides being trained for main vocal, Kyuhyun & Ryeowook deadass leaving him so far away. Kyuhyun even spend shorter time of being a trainee than those two.
      Junsu is only average when he's still in TVXQ & still is even after leaving the group for a long time until he developed his technique himself. Jaejoong is average too & still is even to this point.
      For the lead vocals? Donghae, Sungmin, Tiffany, Sunny, Seohyun, Suho, Xiumin, Lay, Luhan, Joy, Seulgi & Krystal are pretty much ranging from average to weak vocalists.
      & Luna is the most obvious. She started as the main dancer until she worked hard on her voice & SM started to train her & definitely become main vocal. Literally the same case as Taemin.
      So not everything is about the training. It also depends on the idol itself, whether if they're really talented or willing to work hard.

      Czarina Lagrimas exactly! I can sense that sm doesn't joke around when it comes to vocal training all the singers have great support in their singing and the sound is always resonant and clear compared to some that sound to strained or forced

      +Lee Park Disagree!!! HAVE YOU SEEN TAEMIN I AM SO PROUD OF THAT BOY I AM IN TEARS.
      Even Jongin, although you can't say he has that good technique, he does do more singing than rapping which was his original position in the group.

    • @jesusrivera0509
      @jesusrivera0509 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Taemin is one big exeption, true, but that is because he wanted to improve himself sooo bad, and jonghyun helped him a lot, he did it for himself, that wasn't sm .... and he had natural talent ....., jongin now does sing more than during his debut days, but that hasn't make a difference in his technique so far, he has learned how to sound a bit better (a slightly better placement) but not a lot to do with technique, he is still pretty weak. That is the same case for many sm idols like yoona or minho, they sound much better now compared to their debut days, but they only learned how to "sound better" not proper technique.

Like Sunny was a trainee for 6 months in SM before being the last to join SNSD but before that she was in another agency and received vocal training.

      hannahthecritter I know right? I wonder why some companies don't value vocal technique/health. It's really important and it seems like a lot of people don't get that. It's just as important as anything else. If you want a group to last long, their VOICES have to last long. (Though that may be the one of the problems, maybe they don't expect the group to last that long so they just don't care)

      that's what proper, corect technique does to an already existing, albeit weak voice. besides, when taemin debuted he was so young, his voice and body didn't fully develop yet. i sometimes am happy he barely had any lines at first bc he didn't have to strain his voice like many other idols have to. thus he improved like any singer should, but, in kpop i notice companies don't really care about techniue, only how unique your voice is, how to blend with the group and high notes.

    its sad to think that the vocal coaches in many of these companies are butchering these singers voices. I'll mainly speak of Bighit and YG as a fan of groups from those companies they are ruining their voices slowly. Bom already lost her voice from the constant out of range strain and i see Jimin on that same path. Rose is still good but her technique is cringy. They have the money so please invest in your talent

      Jeonsa(전사) For real.. I get that BigHit is a company more focused on hip-hop sound but they still need to show care to their vocalists (especially now that BTS has been doing a lot more ballad-y, vocal-focused songs). It's been 4 years and BTS's vocalists' progress has gone so slowly.. They are all talented and have beautiful voices but BigHit isn't nurturing those voices very well at all. Personally, I hate seeing what they're doing to Taehyung's voice the most. He has a gorgeous baritone, but they're forcing him to sing as if though he's a tenor like the other 3 vocalists in BTS..

    • @gunaymuradova4633
      @gunaymuradova4633 7 ปีที่แล้ว +363

    please people don't think that these vocalists are bad. they just weren't taught about support and proper technique. with help they can get better, they will improve hopefully so don't think of them as bad. just think of them as working on it and improving. you can Still hype up your fav and others too just be respectful and don't use this as a way to be rude to other fans.

    • @jesusrivera0509
      @jesusrivera0509 7 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      karla hernandez If they don't change the way they sing, with the help of a REAL vocal instructure.... or if they are taught wrong and their company likes that (yg & jyp) the's no way most of them will improve.

    • @karlahernandez-qv5qz
      @karlahernandez-qv5qz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      jesus rivera its not that they can't improve its just that a lot of companies think these people are good singers so they don't have actual instructors to help them actually learn. they assume because they can hit a few notes that they're great so they don't bother to get actual vocal instructors. some companies however do put in effort. however its not the artists fault that they don't get help so they shouldn't be bashed because they don't know any better.

    • @jesusrivera0509
      @jesusrivera0509 7 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      It is what i meant tho, yg likes nasal singers, jyp like unsopported/airy singers, big hit doesn't even care .... it is sad that these entertainmnet companies( and so many others) based on music don't knowwhat the basic of singing.

    • @karlahernandez-qv5qz
      @karlahernandez-qv5qz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

And the video of him supporting that note even looked a bit old!

      Thao Truong that's true, but sm turns idols who know nothing about singing to good vocalists. Take Luna and Taemin for example. Both of them were scouted for their dancing ability and were weak vocalists but look at them now. Also, most of the idols who debuted in sm just for their visuals have improved so much in their singing ability compared to other companies, they went from idols who say 2 or 3 words in songs to being decent singers. Also, if you talk about top 5 male idols with best techniques, there would be 4 out of 5 from sm only.

      They ARE the best companies though. Largest&richest company, produced so many legends, their groups are the most awarded, they aren't just known in the idol industry but acting, modelling and variety as well (with SM C&C/ESteem), they're the only company to go further and experiment with big projects (first rotational group in kpop: SUJU, first koreano-chinese group: EXO, first group with an unlimited number of members and units: NCT, only company to launch a project that promotes music as art through 1 song a week: SMSTATION) and I can keep on forever. I didn't even bring up SM's achievements of 1st gen. They started kpop.
      They may have shitty management but they're still on top of the game and unsurpassable.

    and its even crazier that they took taemins vocals that far. they seriously do so well with teaching the proper singing techniques. i applaud them for wanting to keep their vocals in nice shape and consistent

    Essentially, supported sounds come from the diaphragm. If the placement of the sound is right, and there's no tension, supported sounds will also resonate. The sound then comes out like a beam of light.
    Strained (or unsupported) sounds tend to get trapped in the throat because the diaphragm is not being used. All this does is cause the swallowing muscles to engage, which introduces tension, hence the whiny and thin sound often found in unsupported vocals. This can also happen while speaking.
    To see this for yourself, use your throat to sing a note. Try to hold it out for as long as you can and stay on key. Not easy, right?
    Now, breathe into your lower back and sustain a note. If done correctly, you should feel less tension in the throat and a buzzing sensation on your face. Your pitch should also be more stable. Singing like this is healthier and more natural for the voice.

      Joey Perez this is exactly as i thought. I found it harder to identify the strain in male belting esp in e4-g4. it is still sound round somehow, so for me it still sounds the same ( supported or not), but as u said like in some cases we can identify that strained sound when it sounds so obvious like when hoarse and tension come out

    • @edenlewis2538
      @edenlewis2538 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Joey Perez I agree it is so much harder to tell when makes, especially the singers in this video, are straining or not. I was getting confused, if the strain support thing was not there I would have not realized when some people were straining.

    • @tvxqenthusiast
      @tvxqenthusiast 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Sometimes the sound is the same/similar, but when you observe the throats and larynx of someone straining it's more clear that they're injuring their vocal cords even if no tension is heard.

    • @alleahjadesaturay1999
      @alleahjadesaturay1999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Joey Perez uhm i just wanna tell my opinion abt strain/support.(well this is just how i see it or based on my observations) When i can't differentiate strain and support i sometimes look at the singer's neck, if there are visible veins appearing, then i can tell it's strain but when there's none or not that visible then it's support. Well i'm not sure if that's right but as i said it's based on my observations 😊

      CeeejPri123 not necessarily like that
      If you based the one's straining or supporting by the expressions/gestures, I'm sure you'll assuming Sohyang strained because she often do that kind of really tense expression when she hits extremely high notes

    "VIXX's Leo, despite having *great natural ability*" I can't tell you how much I agree with this. Whoever trained him, if he has ever been trained, is doing a shit job. Leo possesses such a wide natural range that it's mind-boggling, but when he belts it always sounds like he's pushing through something. It's such a fucking waste. He can't keep this up forever.

    • @Mo-hh8wh

      Grace anonymous he used the word "fuc*ing" because of the strong feeling he has towards the situation where Leo have to strain frequently to the high notes. Because of course it's really a waste if his voice would be ruined just because of improper technique when he could do so much better than that.

      AuntyStan its not playing safe, ballad is just his type of song. His dream was actually to be a ballad singer, but sm put him in suju instead. Sadly bc ifans think ballad is boring, they often ignore his talent because he doesnt do "high notes" or his songs are "easy" to sing. Time is a motive too ... I'm sorry, but I think in the older groups, in their early days some of them were not as good or "talented" as now (I mean the same singers do not style something " The new ones are better, no. "Come on, someone who's been singing a year would not compare to someone who's sung during ... idk, 10 years).
      The newer groups do not have that much time (But it's true, some sing throughout their lives, I do not know how to justify those cases)
      Please, do not underestimate the newer groups ... It's very sad for fans of these, like me :(
      (I made this by translate of google, if you don't understand, I'm sorry but my english skills aren't really good).

      i agree time in the business doesnt make your vocals better.... how much training you have received is important.. this is why wendy just debuted and is better than taeyon which is 10 years in the industry

    • @lightishredgummi
      @lightishredgummi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      T s u k k ι s α u r ι o ه the newer groups are also coming out in a time when the industry is so much larger and more competitive. It seems like the older groups were more well crafted since the industry was smaller and less stressful. The newer groups are being pumped out to try to keep up with demand and competition. So not only have older groups had years to master things and the younger haven't had that much time, companies are getting greedier and caring less about what they're putting out there.

    • @jesusrivera0509
      @jesusrivera0509 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Nayeons and jeongyeons dildo ..... no it doesnt mean they're inconsistent, they are both very consistent within their supported range, specially chen, but this range has an end and any note they singe outside their supported range is obviously going to be strained. Of course the bigger your supported range is the better, that is why i.e kyuhyun is a better vocalist than both of them, his supported range goes higher, but also hans an end. the ultimate vocalist is the one who can support every note of his vocal range but that is imposible.

  • @Goodmorningstar430

    Thank you for making this great video. I love Chen, Woohyun, Ken, Sandeul, Kyuhyun and obviously Park Hyoshin vocals the best. Lot of the above Kpop idol (support) had experience stain vocals in some performance in their career they have their good and bad days but some of the idol who was used as example for stain vocals are not bad vocalist for example K Will, Leo or Ken. So I hope people understand and don't get upset it's just a video to show the difference I hope people don't cause fan wars and say this idol is better than this idol or make a judgement because of these examples. I just want to point out I'm proud of Woohyun he improved so much from his rookie days, most of his performance shown in this video was back in 2011 a year after his debut he really did improve a lot through the years he have better support now and look at his recent and last year Immortal song performance it's really impressive and give me goosebumps (he scored highest for idol) his really a emotional and a very good singer also his vocals sounds a lot mature now or another example how Taemin was one of the weaker vocalist of Shinee in the earlier days and now he can belt high notes and one of the best vocalist in Shinee so what I'm trying to say same can be said for the rookie group hopefully some of the rookie Idol group listed here might have better support in the future they are new and always room for improvements and we shouldn't look down on them. I hope to see V, Minhyuk (Monsta X) Sunggyu, Yoseop and etc.

      Gina Rosa sorry for bursting your bubble. But analysing them as a vocalist, based on vocal technique, K. Will is only above average vocalist which mean still pretty good tho. But Ken & Leo? Ken is only average vocalist, almost on the bottom area compared to the other averages, while Leo is deadass a weak vocalist, among the weakest even for idols that have main/lead vocals as their position.

    even though i love taekwoon and taekwoons voice to pieces, i have to agree, his voice is an excellent example of vocal strain. i honestly don't think he was vocally trained properly and is well on his way to permanently damaging his vocal chords if he doesn't learn a different technique to hit the notes he's told to soon. im not a professional, so this is all my opinion but im sure some of you can agree. adding onto that, the amount of high notes he's required to hit are insane, especially considering how unproperly trained his vocals are and i wish jellyfish ent would take note of this soon, it's worrying me. i feel like i repeated a lot of my points and opinions but i think you get the general idea lol

      FakeSmilesandLaughs It wasn't really until Taeyong and Mark came around that SM gave liberty for artists to perform their own rap-based songs though. Prior to that, I don't remember SM giving that kind of freedom to any other rap-focused artists. I think SM is really strict when it comes to change and freedom for their artists, but I think they're opening it up a bit more than they used to, which is a good thing.
      I do agree that I wish that BigHit would allow them to have proper vocal coaches because at this point they can't give the excuse that they don't have enough money...they can probably get the best vocal coaches around the world for each of them. I'm most worried for Jimin because they're trying to make him sing notes that are high, but not properly which can really damage his voice in the long run and BigHit I'm tryin to be a 60 year old ARMY still listening to them sing, you know what I mean? :>

      Annefantasy2003 no!, leehyun is ranked as a proficient vocalist and surprisingly, hes technicaly better than all shinee vocalists, all btob vocalists, all tvxq vocalists, and all exo vocalists except for chen.
      Bts should definitely learn from their sunbae so they can at least how to sing with proper dynamics and technique before its too late (especially for jimin).

    Taemin used to be called a tone deaf singer and he lacked technique and he screamed most of the time during their debut times. I'm so happy he never gave up and worked really hard. Now he's a respected artist

      He's good but pretty underrate so sometimes i think he'll get low credit that's why sometimes when something like this coming i'm not really sure he'll added, that's so f-ing sad. While Ryeowook, Kyuhyun, Chen and Hyosin are already like "you know them? Wow they're the best" thing-y. even Dongha compared to Hyoshin, Hyosin i think sometimes get more credit.

    I've always thought that if BTS' vocal line got a better vocal training they would be amazing singers.
    And please, don't get me wrong, I love BTS, but yeah, I think they need better training, which should be done now that they have all the means to.

      The thing is that, I always seeing commen that they actually didnt improved at all since debut days. By some people that I can guarantee they know what theyre saying. And thats upsetting to me bcos BH just doesnt fix that.

      and it's so sad - I feel so bad for them that big hit pushes them to sing in a destructive manner. At this rate, their voices would not last and they will end up with permanent damage.
      keep in mind though that at this point, it's hard for them to re-learn and employ better technique. They've been singing like this for so long now that it's become a habit that's difficult to reverse. And as mentioned big hit doesn't fucking care so I'm not getting my hopes up :(

    Knowing nothing about vocal techniques or the "science" behind singing, I found this video very interesting. I had heard the terms "strain" and "support" before, but never fully understood what they meant in relation to singing, so thanks to EXIDek! And I feel like I'll (kinda) be able to tell the difference the next time I hear one of my faves ^^ I would like to note that I personally like the sound of a strained voice as much as a supported voice - they each have their own charms to me. However, if it puts the vocalist's voice at risk, I'd rather they stick with a supported voice more often then not :/

      He supports until A4 (an example is included in this video)
      Anyway I wouldn't use his cover of Tears as an example, though, because that was a one time thing (I hope at least), just to show how high he could reach, not how good of a vocalist he is XD (even though people sometimes misunderstand those 2 things)
      Sadly he is required to sing higher than his comfortable range because that's what kpop is about a lot of times, high notes...I hope he can preserve his voice for a long time!
