Christmas 1999.. My mom gave me this game as a gift "from" my little baby brother that year...He was born months prior. I always remember thinking "Aw, cool ! my baby brother picked this out for me?! How sweet" lol..I loved this game.I havent played it since at least 2002/03.....aaand I'm now crying, because that is one of the memories that have always been so vivid to me. I miss my mom so terribly. My little brother is now turning 25 in about a week. This game really was soo special to me.
Honestly I thought I was the only person that had ever played legend of the river king, I've no idea who got me it when I was little, I was never into fishing and coming from an era where I used to be able to go to the market and get knock off amiga games I thought holy shit this is so good, I feel so special that no one else has it. I was young, but not too young so understood the mechanics as an early adopter of the rpg lifestyle haha. This game is life, and harvest moon. I would love to see an updated or fan mod of this game but I would utterly play the shit out of this again just the way it is. I never caught the legend and it pisses me off TO THIS DAY and I'm in my early 30s. I think it needs to be rectified
Shortbread Head I bought this game from Target when I was like 11 years old, and also never managed to fully finish it either. I still think back, wondering what the guardian fish looks like. But that last area broke young me down into dust. Quite a challenging little game that I've always had a fondness for.
> I thought I was the only person that had ever played legend of the river king yes, youre the only one. Youre the SPECIAL ONE. even in reality there always more faithful audiences play niche games titles, including this beloved river king.
I had this game when I was maybe 7. I never could figure out how to beat the game or really even progress much at all. It still stands out I'm my mind as much as the Pokemon games did. Thanks for the video. I might have to replay it once again someday.
You going to look at the second western installment? I feel it improves the first game with more activities and enviroments. Catching bugs, diving for clams and shellfish, a river setting and an ocean setting. Plus you meet gods. But it is still a relaxing game.
Also I want to mention just because I think it is very interesting, at least for an 8 bit system and a handheld at that. The sequel has variable weather and a day night cycle, which I think effects what fish/bugs you can catch. But I think the only weather is either rain or shine, no thunderstorms.
I love fishing mini-games but I always wanted something more. I downloaded the english translation for the first game and I plan to play the ones I can.
Just started to play the series, it was a nice experience, i like how much variety the game has. The only thing they could have improved is the RPG/Battle System aspect of the game.
You have a great channel mate, just found it today. Have a copy of this in Japanese on the Gameboy and it helps that it's a simpler kind of RPG, pretty fun!
I really liked this game. I remember playing it when my dad dragged me to a cricket match! Also played the hell out of Harvest Moon. I should get back into those type of games but I seem to lack the patience these days.
I got pokemon blue imported in 98, I have literally no idea how I found out about it when I was in primary school, I mean I've been gaming my whole life but as I think back I have NO idea how I heard about (or convinced my mum to import) pokemon. While that was the game me and my friends played in the playground and went crazy for, it was only the start of my quest for bigger games on gameboy that I could spend countless hours on, leading me to harvest moon and legend of the river king. I could never explain to my friends why I was enjoying a farming game and a fishing game, they thought it sounded boring and stupid, but they are games I could still play even today. I've spent thousands of hours in stardew valley due to my love for harvest moon but sadly.. there has been no modern take on legend of the river king and I think that's an injustice ps, sorry for the story leading up to my love for this game, idk I just thought it was an important part of how I came to enjoy it haha
This is awesome my man. Great review :) really enjoyed this, subbing in support of of retro reviews :) I've never been fishing before, maybe I should try this before trying in real life!! :D
Thanks a lot MythicThom, really appreciate that! I haven't been fishing since I was a kid (and even then I don't remember ever catching anything.) but games like this really make me want to do it.
There were a couple of Asterix and Obelix games for the Game Boy Color, one of them was pretty good from what I remember. The characters were fairly well known to kids in the UK back then. Less so now I would think.
They are very, very well known here in Germany. Pretty sure I owned that Obelix game on the DMG. Just thought it was a funny coincidence that they were features twice in your screenshots. I also wanted to tell you that another fishing game from the series was fan translated, Nushi Tsuri Adventure: Kite no Bouken.
i remember playing this as a 10 year old. i thought it was utterly fantastic I loved it. I never did find the guardian fish it was very challenging for me
Nice, I was actually looking for exactly this kind of review to see if I wanted to give this series a try. The idea of a fishing RPG seemed... well... fishy to me. You managed to hit a lot of important questions I had in a very well thought out manner, thanks for this. On a side note... Dragon Quest Monsters is a really great series, it's kind of sad it gets relegated to being a clone of Pokemon... especially when it had breeding first lol.
@@TimelessGamingUK it broke me I loved both LotrK1/2 (sea king?) but it is just a very bad game. cheap, though. (I'm usa, mine was like $10 off amazon)
I used to like this game as a kid and it’s cause it reminded me of pokemon games which I loved and still do but yea I also like fishing so I thought this was a cool game I also liked Godzilla on gameboy
I have been enjoying part 2 after running it through the Gameboy ROM Analyzer for Windows and adding Rumble by changing the cartridge type to 1EH and fixing the header. It was programmed into the Japanese version and just needs to be opened on the English version. I Flashed the game to my USB Smartcard for Gameboy and have been playing on the Epilogue GB Operator with a Rumble controller. I have also been playing with Rumble on the Pow Kiddy V90 with the Pocket Go Firmware Update. Nushi Tsuri Adventure-Kite no Bouken English patch also works. Fishing Fun For Everyone !!!! Much easier with Rumble. I plan on getting a Flashcart from ETSY that saves without a battery and putting on it.

What a lovely memory, thanks for sharing it with me. Glad this video was able to remind you of it!

I hope my sister has survived ok this past 20 years or so... I promised her a fucking fish and I'm damn well going to get it for her

Agreed - I only knew one other kid who played it back in the 90's!

It's always a pleasure to stumble across such high quality reviews
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
2021 LOL, i miss this game, after beating the giant carp in the secret pond, what a story... what a game on that time

Amazing review! Very well paced and informative 😄

Sounds great! I look forward to playing it, and I'm sure I'll review it when I finish it. Thanks for the comment!
No problem, and I'll be sure to subscribe and look forward to your review. Keep up the good work!

Yeah totally man. You're welcome :) love your channel.
Got anything else planned video wise soon? :)
It's interesting that the magazines you showed features Obelix and then Asterix too!

Glad to help! :)
I've been playing the ps2 entry in this series recently nice to see the handheld version in action. Cool video man!
Nice! I'd be interested to play one of the console versions to see how it compares.
I did not know a PS2 version of this game existed. Nice!

Never heard of this game before but I'm glad I know about it now thanks to your video :)
Awesome review, never really understood what this game was... but now I know!
Thanks, glad you liked it! Now you can tell people that it’s a relaxing game where you catch fish and punch bears.

Lovely review of a lovely game
Thanks!
does the eshop game version is already fixed about that bug about the buttons? i want to buy it so badly ewe
this game was so much fun... I have it on the original game boy.
8:30 ok that was pretty funny, even though the joke's been done plenty of times
My dad got me this game. I never caught one fish.
Is that "young boy" Pete from Harvest Moon?
PK Radical! LOL!
what's the difference between legend of the river king and the
sequel river king 2?
Check out Vilkas Brecht's comment below. I've not played it, but it sounds like it has a lot of extra content.
Are the battles just random encounters?
Yep, but only in 'wild' areas and only certain creatures appear in certain areas.
Awesome video!
Hey man your videos are really good and I was just wondering if I could react to your videos
hidden gem, thx!

Casually fight a bear
2023 : It got quite expensive 😁
This is awsome
Wow, I've never heard of this game! Kinda inspired to make a fishing game now haha. Thanks!
dont do it
Next stardew valley update anyone?
This game sounds tedious as hell
Well, one man's tedious is another man's relaxing :)
