I recently put my son's 1999 GBC into a new shell and put in a laminated IPS screen. Very easy to do, not too expensive if parts bought from AliExpress and the results are fantastic.
The Gameboy Light was the last Gameboy with this form factor. It was sold exclusively in Japan. Was a monochrome like the Pocket but with a toggled EL backlight.
I just did the AMOLED mod on my 1998 Dandelion Yellow GBC. I love playing real cartridges on original hardware again. I love that it uses AA batteries as well. You can always find AA batteries and even with the AMOLED they last a while. Plus it still gives you the option to run with rechargeable AA batteries.
Despite having several Chinese emulation devices that came "loaded" with ROMs I tend to play the games I already bought decades ago. I still have my original GBA SP & many carts *but* my 40+ eyes mean I prefer a bigger screen. So Anbernic & competitors get my vote.
I bought a Gameboy Color a few weeks ago, stuck it in a new shell and upgraded the screen. I choose a shell and buttons that kinda mimics the original Gameboy's color scheme.
I think the emulators with hundreds of roms leads to decision paralysis. I find myself just jumping from game to game after a few mins with each. Grabbing my old Gameboy pocket or Gameboy color and one or two cartridges; ensures I don’t have any decision paralysis. It’s a good feeling that we seem to have lost in modern times.
I agree lol. Homebrewed my 3DS a while back and dumped EVERY rom I could onto that bad boy. Barely played any of em for more than like 20mins. Put every one of em into a folder and tucked it alllll the way at the end of the menu and have only my MUST plays at the main screen.
I grew up with the GBC and decided to buy one a couple of years ago.....I honestly don't know how I played that in low light all those years with no glow light
Getting ready to buy one now from Japan CIB, im surprised that I never had one when I was a kid but my sister had a Gameboy Pocket and I played it more than she ever did.
Agreed! There’s a deeper connection to a game when you play it how it’s meant to play. This is why I like to collect. It is much much more enjoyable to play a video game on its original platform. I lose interest a lot quicker when I play on subscription or emulation.
Option you didn't mention the Funny Playing FPGBC - kind of a GB color but better. Inexpensive ($83 shipped at least in US), beautiful IPS screen and plays GB and GBC cartridges. Comes in an easy to assemble kit or buy pre-assembled for a bit more. It is essentially a GBC hw clone with all new parts - IPS screen and rechargeable battery. Note: it does have issues with multicarts though if you downgrade to fw 1.08 it plays the cheap ED clone carts from Ali fine.
i bought the atomic purple gameboy color at target. paying $80 for it was not a bad price. i sold mine years ago. then years later i found the atomic purple at a thrift store for $20 so i picked it up & i'm on the hunt for games for it
I totally agree with the point about too many games. I didn't grow up with the gbc but the original gba was my bread and butter. I use the ez omega and only load 3 to 4 games. Older games are a challenge even the simpler ones like kirby and if you have the option to keep switching you'll never persevere. I think that's one of the reasons why I've fallen out of favor with "modern" gaming recently. I've just started collecting alot of physical media that I've either thrown away or sold over the years and if I knew how much time and effort that would cost me I wouldn't have sold a thing. But I keep telling myself it's worth it because I won't be beholden to yet another subscription, eshop, Playstation store, ect...
Yes! I literally bought the exact same model game boy and same first game that I had growing up. I also noticed this problem when I started to accumulate a large steam library. I've never even installed half of them, much less finished them.
Yeah using roms or modded consoles with the native games for cough free is probably the absolute best combination. I do love emulators but I do appreciate it that you can basically do the same but native with the og console if you use flashcart or modding.
@paulperryvids crazy too cause there's some really nice newer indie games on there inspired by the classic games that are actually pretty good. Can't care to much about a present day AAA title maybe nintendo at most.
@@robmalcolm8042 oh I definitely recommend that I use a ds lite for indoors and when I go outside I bring the gba because you just can't beat it out side the screen looks amazing in the sun. I plan on doing a boxy pixel unhinged mod to replace the ds.
IMHO, YES, but.. Gameboy color has nostalgia vibe, it holds perfectly in the hands, and brings attention those who used to play with it back then although modding is necessary to be able for you to use it. I did on mine new case/shell, new membranes for buttons, oled display and rechargable battery with high capacity. And collecting physical games in original package is fun.
I would say the Miyoo Mini Plus is a much better option in this day and age. Costs around $60, beautiful 4:3 aspect ratio screen, OnionOS firmware, and much more accurate d-pad than the Anbernic RG35XX.
I always prefer original hardware and despite having a couple of those emulation consoles I always gravitate towards the OG GBC. It helps me though removing all the ROMs from my anbernic and only putting back on what I wanna play, makes it a lot less tacky and overpopulated.
Yes, but mostly for tetris in a convenient form factor. Every other game on gameboy has a better counterpart somewhere else but it could still be worth owning something like link's awakening or pokemon crystal to people who enjoy more simple or nostalgic versions of their favorite games. Either of those games could still be your favorite in the series. Then there's stuff like mole mania and dk94 that you would only ever play via emulation otherwise. Bought a modretro chromatic, a military-grade gameboy, just for tetris.
And you are absolutely right especially the older generations are easy to handle. Personally I have problems with newer models like the 3ds - the hinge can be frustrating and the flat cable connector handles max 6 openings ( industry standard) so you have to be careful. The Gameboy OLED Mod is more or less only screws and only one cable to solder !
See findings a stock gameboy could cost like 40 to 80 probably and then moding one could cost 100 to 200 not including actually gb games whitch is half of some emulation devices or switch even but to each there own

Ok, but It is not original anymore. You musf feel like It was in 1998s or the experience is not authentic.

Love this style! The background colours you used fit so well
Thanks!

Yeah it was a shock when I first turned it on after not using one for so long.
We definitely had younger eyes back then. 👀
@Asfgxff Oh For Sure! Lol

Totally worth it! I still have mine, exactly like yours ❤
you need more subs man!! your content is great

U can also put a lighted screen on gbc or old gba if you wanted

I had the atomic purple GBC. I wish I can get again one day to my Game Boy family line.
Do you want mine? I’m selling it 😁 50$!

Good idea!
True and you can get a flashcart to play roms natively so natively running roms instead of emulation
Regarding the rechargeables, you didn't think of rechargeable AAs? Really good video though. I've subscribed.
Good point!
Rechargable batteries are great, and they last so long, I have the Energizer rechargables and the battery life is crazy.
Agreed! Minus the mention of BT, no need it at all.

Ok, but we all know the infrared sensor was for trading pokemon without a link cable 😂
This is awesome
Kwaad Naas Breh 💥
No. Get either a GBA SP or a backlight modded regular GBA.
No reason to have a Gameboy Color.
Gba is backwards compatible.
I pay 1000$ for a GBA color in purple transparent in mint condition in original package 😁
I think modding the gameboy is not as hard as people think
