    I have a different story. Before Josh was born, back in the early 1980s, I was a young Philadelphia disc jockey working in the top-five market in the United States. I had a background in film and TV as well. A woman approached me and suggested that a woman I had dated had mentioned me to her, and her suggestion was that I should move out to California and join a production company as an actor in adult films. I was an unsaved guy and I dated very actively, because this is what the lost world was telling me a guy like me should do. But when I thought about it, I heard a voice in the back of my head that said, “Don’t do it. You will regret this forever. Tell them no.” As a result of the impact that voice had, I never followed up with her for that job, I stayed with my position at the radio station. About two years later, a young girl called up in the middle of the night, telling me that she was taking whiskey and barbiturates and wanted me to play a particular song for her on the radio as she was ending her life. I’ll shorten the story by telling you that I got the phone company to put a trace on the line. The police got into her apartment and found her, and she flatlined twice on the way to the hospital. If I had taken that job in California… moved myself out to Northridge, and taken what any unsaved young man might consider to be his dream job, that girl would probably be dead today, but God intervened in my life…..and I give Him all the glory.

    I heard Joshua's story before but never to this extent, in such great detail. My heart breaks for his past but glory be to God and His power to deliver my brother in Christ from a sordid life and to live out the rest of his years in solidarity in Christ. God bless this wonderful man and his family. God is good all the time!

    This podcast brought me to tears hearing about Our Lord’s love and forgiveness and how it transforms souls. It made me contemplate the gospel stories, i.e. Mary Magdalene, the Woman at the Well etc. and I was moved deep within my soul. God’s love is immeasurable. My faith is strengthened having heard Joshua’s story.

    I just want to thank God for his converssion... Yes, he has a past, as we all, even if ours is not that extreme, but he was humble enough and had enough love to accept his mistakes and change his life, which is extremely hard. Many people don't do it out of fear of the comments, such as the ones in this comment section. Thank God, because now he can reach a population that might think that they are too far out of reach. He is living proof of our Lord's misericordy. All glory to Him ❤

    Thank you, Lila, for bringing Joshua Broome on your program. I applaud anyone from the pornographic film industry who is willing to speak out as to how this industry damages both the performers and those who choose to look at such material. These pornographic film stars tend to be stigmatized, quite hypocritically, by the very same public that views such material in high numbers. So it really takes courage to speak out on such topics. These industry insiders are far more credible than someone, looking from the outside of the industry, who just sanctimoniously judges the participants and the audience for participating and consuming this type of media. Joshua Broome and other former stars of this industry can speak with such credibility, and their voices can really serve to deglamorize this industry in a way that other voices can't

    Joshua’s story highlights how self esteem and worth are developed at an early age and then affect choices and the way we accept being treated. But it is also a story of redemption for all, regardless of the sin. His wife Hope exudes the grace and mercy all Christians hope to give when presented with the truth. Amazing all the way around. Great interview and the work he is doing now is saving lives.

    Raised Pentecostal/Assemblies of God, and grateful for that heritage. However, when puberty hit the only way I knew to process that, was that something was going on inside of me that was profoundly wrong and bad. The only way I knew to respond to that, was self-hatred and self rejection. As a consequence I didn’t get married until I was 46. That only happened because some friends introduced me to someone they knew. An active dating life for me was to go out once maybe every 18 to 24 months. Had two girlfriends in my life prior to that. One for a week, the other for a month. to say I was naïve and unprepared is an understatement. The marriage lasted for 16 years. Because I was so unprepared, even through all those years, she left. That was five years ago ago. Life has become a constant battle of guilt, shame, and suicidal thoughts.
    In my Pentecostal background, there is a deep emphasis on personal holiness. This is entirely correct. It’s supposed to be paramount. However, the teaching on personal holiness, and the need to live a crucified life, implied that any interests, desires, sense of purpose, or passion, needed to be destroyed. To attempt to do anything other than that, would be rebellion against God.
    It’s taken over 45 years, but that presumption has finally broken me.
    I am hardly unique. There are actually generations of sincere Christian men, that are so broken they turn to suicide. This is an issue that is at crisis proportions in the church. No one pays any attention to it. I needed to post this someplace. Here it is.

    Hi Lila:
    Excellent interview, thank you very much.
    My only comment is that you seemed to indicate that all sexual mortal sins are of equal gravity. The Catechism teaches otherwise cf. # 1858, 2352. There are varying degrees with regard to mortal sins, especially with regard to masturbation. This only makes sense when you compare masturbation to adultery where now you have violated not only yourself but your spouse and the person you had sex with and your marital vows. Apart from that thanks again and keep up the good work.
    Fr. Paul Burchat

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great point Fr. Burchat. I appreciate the nuance. It would make sense that there would be gradations to a particular sin, in the same way the law treats murder differently, depending on the context (i.e first degree murder, second degree murder). Your comment just reminds me that I need to brush up on my catechism.

NONE of us are faultless...even after we've "found Jesus" (actually...HE found us!) or are "born again". We're still gonna fall. It's a FACT of human "nature" (well not really but our CORRUPTED nature. Better!). So the key is NOT whether we are going to fall again or not. We WILL! The key is how often but most importantly, what do we do about it? Do we just give up and go back to the road that leads to death OR do we get back on our feet, deny ourselves, pick up our cross and FOLLOW HIM every single day???!!! The horrible thing I have encountered is that virginity is treated as centrally important to, and basic to the standard rhetoric of female CELIBACY, with a flipside of defilement, being violated, loss of glory (meaning honor). Women are officially rejected for being "consecrated virgins" (the parish based form of consecrated life) if "ever lived in public or manifest violation of chastity", as if Christ the Bridegroom were like the guy who didn't want to marry the girl because she had a 'past'. Meanwhile the "consecrated virgin" vocation trains clergy and laity to think about and define celibate women parishioners and their vocation differently based on"what kind of woman this is"--whether they are "virgins." There is a willful refusal to see how this creates so many disturbing and discouraging messages and creates an environment of anxiety and shame because it's considered a legitimate issue whether a woman living a chaste, devout life is a "virgin." Even though the way of life is the same either way and Jesus died and rose again for all of our sins.

    • @sliglusamelius8578
      @sliglusamelius8578 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well what can be done? The ideal for Christian marriage is virginity until marriage and fidelity after. We know about sin and we know about God's forgiveness for a truly repentant sinner. We can't do more or less than uphold the ideal.

      @ElizabethDMadison 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sliglusamelius8578 Do you believe we should discourage or humiliate girls who want to marry because they had been miseducated and earlier engaged in unchastity? In our culture how would girls actually know the ideal you are referring to? It is seldom taught. You are discussing marriage, I am discussing celibacy--to which past sexual behavior is of practical irrelevance. Women who learn as adults to embrace chastity and who have a celibate vocation should not be treated as though it were unfit for it. That makes no sense. I am talking not about women as an abstraction but about real people who need either married or celibate vocation for their spiritual growth and salvation.

You have "standards" but I never heard of those standard when I was young and now you hold me accountable for having not upheld them. It's completely unrealistic and cruel to categorize women as to whether they are sexually "new" or "used" and then laugh and make fun when women feel shame.

    • @ElizabethDMadison
      @ElizabethDMadison 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sliglusamelius8578 What on earth were you claiming was a strawman? The whole point is that it's literally never an issue in the Church whether brides are "virgins" and no one would make an issue of that let alone reject such a one for having a church wedding. Self evidently that would greatly humiliate (would-be) brides. You want it to be an issue for female celibates but you apparently didn't have basic insight that that would cause shame too for people who just want to live chastely and faithfully for Jesus and don't want to be defined as a woman relative to something bad that happened years and years ago. In the Gospels there is a man named Simon the Pharisee who has "standards" like yours and Jesus confronts Simon's ideas about "what kind of woman this is" and defends her.
