    My tip for the new painters, but NOT to be over used, is remember, if it all goes horribly wrong, you can actually redo everything just by dunking the model in Isopropyl alcohol and using a tooth brush to get it off. So don’t worry about major mistakes. However, don’t think of this as an undo button when you make one mistake!

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, most mistakes are just an ugly phase that needs to be pushed through

    • @Mikey__R
      @Mikey__R ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've not filled in any detail, there's not actually any need to dunk. You can just paint that one bit again.

    Honestly your one of the few youtubers I watch that have made data gathering interesting. Your approach to how you share your interests in this hobby are awesome from color history to what's the best advice for new hobbyists. It's really cool and entertaining.
    I can't wait for your next video :)
    My advice for new painters is treat a mini like a coloring book and pick the colors you want, if you paint something exactly like you think it has to be. It becomes very difficult to experiment later and experimenting is half the fun

    hey and thanks.
    i also attended a roman lappat beginners workshop because i wanted to get started with the painting stage.
    BUT, thats also what i asked him. how to have fun?
    i enjoy cleaning up the bits and building everything, but after that i put em in the drawer without the motivation to paint it.
    so i think, there should be guides of how to enjoy painting, being it to paint together etc.

    Mmmm, the DSPIAE (pronounced this pay, according to a Reddit AMA they did something like a year ago) 3.0 nippers. Absolutely love those alongside my Tamiya 123's for hobbies where a two cut process is beneficial (namely gunpla and anywhere else you do straight builds).
    I can see now why so many mention priming in black... And despite having tried a few other methods, it tends to be my favourite, especially with a quick and concise grey zenithal drybrush - provided I'm not painting in oils. For oils I'll mix up a medium-dark grey and then go over that with a rather light grey lighting zenithal, but that's mainly because for now I seem to prefer such. Love how you mention that priming in black also means that if you miss somewhere out of the way, or hard to access... It's already full shadow!
    As for thinning with water, I'd say it all depends on how hard (or soft) your water is. Sure, I can use distilled water (and I do, for wet palettes, as well as water activated pencils (Faber Castell Albrecht Durer and Derwent Inktense come to mind)), but it's hard to beat the convenience of just pulling from the tap. Works well for Reaper Bones metallics, but I personally get better results with Vallejo Thinner Medium. However, I do agree that thinners aren't really necessary for mini painting!
    Thank you soooo much for saying a wet palette, while nice to have, ISN'T a necessity. They're rather handy (so I'm told, mine still hasn't been broken in yet but hopefully will be soon (decided to focus on mental health stuff first, and get a bunch of other things sorted out)), but you definitely do NOT need the latest and fanciest of things. Some of them are handy (like say the Studio XL palette, with it's lid that seals so well it feels like you'll need vice grips to get it open again), while others are also nice but definitely overkill (Say, the BenQ e-reading lamps, which are rather lovely, but in my area, they're also like $300 CAD more than a pair of Ikea Tertial lamps)

    Good vid 👌
    Mould line scrapers - you can use the back of a knife blade instead, but it can save you some nicks and scrapes to your fingers, or if you're occasionally cack-handed like me can save you trying to give yourself six toes! 🤣
    Re:paints, I'm a bit of a paint tart, noticed you mentioned Scale 75, I've been trying some of them for the last six months, really impressed! Great coverage and very, very smooth 👌

      I've yet to try S75 through the airbrush, but it's on my list of things to do, probably for HH. With a brush it's really nice!

    have two different water pots (mine just has 2 chambers) one with soapy water and one with clean rinse water
    it helps maintain the brushes and extends their life

    That's a good point about the zenithal: you're not necessarily mapping out the highlights to a great degree of accuracy, but you are mapping out the shadows. And you're giving your paints an easier base to stick to.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly I use it to get a very general sense of how to put stuff together. Getting the highlights and the shadows mapped out.

    I've been painting mini's for 4 decades... I'm still learning!
    my one suggestion. if you are painting a large army and/or lots of vehicles. consider craft hobby paints. use them for the majority coverage painting. save your more expensive paints for details.
    a craft paint will cost under $2 for 2 fl oz.
    the premier paint is about $8 for 0.5 FL oz. also, use basic craft brushes for majority of coverage. it adds life to your expensive brushes by not using them for the bulk painting.

    • @RisingApe

    I find when I buy expensive brushes I use them as an excuse to NOT paint, because I don't want to ruin them. For me its better to go cheap and mid range so I don't have to feel bad about not taking great care of them or using paints that are not good for them.

    • @RisingApe

      That's funny because that's how I am about my knives. If I have a very expensive one I stress over losing it or damaging it so I stick with the more economical which gives me more bang (blade) for the buck.

Honest feedback the kickstarter was massively delayed but the customer service has always been good for me and during the KS they replied to any messages I had quickly. It’s hands down the best palette I have used, but a DIY is functionally the same.
