for real. phelps top speed is around 6mph MAX. but a great white sharks top speed is 25mph. at 25 mph that would take 9 seconds to travel 100m. based off the time phelps avg was just under 6mph. which is damn impressive but no way in hell would the time be that close

That sudden burst of speed is an example of how fast they can go when they are eating a seal. Sharks have to conserve energy and cant go 25 mph for long durations so they "cruise" at about 5 mph.

Guys, the reason why Phelps stood a chance was because he also used a monofin, which Helps a lot, and the great white shark swims at a slow pace with brief bursts of speed. Yes, it can go triple phelps's normal speed (without a fin), but since it's not always going as fast as it can AND phelps is constantly going the fastest he can, at a steady rate with a fin, Phelps barely lost. 100 meters is hardly a short distance. In short bursts, great white sharks can easily go over 25 miles per hour and they certainly don't need the entire length of a football field to build up that speed. A simple google search brings up countless articles and videos in which this is clearly proven. This was a stupid, inaccurate spectacle that Discovery channel funded in a weak attempt to gain back some shred of relevancy. Seeing as shark week was the only thing they have been able to build hype behind in the last 5 years, they saw this as an easy way to gain attention.

Sam Davis You should watch the full episode on the discovery channel because they explain to you that sharks cant go at their maximum speed for a long time. That sudden burst of speed is an example of how fast they can go when they are eating a seal. Sharks have to conserve energy and cant go 25 mph for long durations so they "cruise" at about 5 mph.

@coolman5242 Discovery Channel has been known to show great wildlife episodes, and great shows of the natural world, and our natural environment. Not many others do so. This overproduced show was like many other networks. It became just another unreality show. A bad trend.

Guys, the reason why Phelps stood a chance was because he also used a monofin, which Helps a lot, and the great white shark swims at a slow pace with brief bursts of speed. Yes, it can go triple phelps's normal speed (without a fin), but since it's not always going as fast as it can AND phelps is constantly going the fastest he can, at a steady rate with a fin, Phelps barely lost. It is realistic and he stood a chance

100 meters is hardly a short distance. In short bursts, great white sharks can easily go over 25 miles per hour and they certainly don't need the entire length of a football field to build up that speed. A simple google search brings up countless articles and videos in which this is clearly proven. This was a stupid, inaccurate spectacle that Discovery channel funded in a weak attempt to gain back some shred of relevancy. Seeing as shark week was the only thing they have been able to build hype behind in the last 5 years, they saw this as an easy way to gain attention.
