    The one 'mechanical' thing that stands out to me with Michael Phelps coming off the wall is how deep he is compared to the other swimmers. I had just learned about 'getting under the backwash' which is the stream/flow of water that follows you into the wall from my swim coach, and then saw Phelps win one of his medals where he went into the wall maybe a half body length behind who ever was next to him, and he came up a body length in front. In the interview after, he commented about how he was able to get down under the backwash. This is not mentioned, covered or explained, in any flip turn video I have ever seen.

    • @jeffreyd700

      Good point, I swam competitively in high school and I never thought about that but it makes sense.

    • @NoisqueVoaProduction
      @NoisqueVoaProduction 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Wow!
      It makes total sense.
      I got back to swimming after a long time and now I can really see how much physics there is in it.
      Third law, how much you can push behind you is equal to how much you are going foward
      First law, how much you can maintain. I remember in a few classes in college teacher told me to hold up longer to the speed of my jump and not straight up swim, since swimming right away only causes friction that actually de-acelerates your jump/speed. Only that tip helped in like, whole seconds.
      And now this one. I was getting back and experimenting the turns swimming in my back and I was noticing being a little below the surface was feeling more hydrodynamic...
      And it makes so much sense, the current that is following you is holding you back. You have the whole pool for yourself, you should use it to your advantage.
      Thanks so much for the tip and explanation!!

      I also wonder if starting deep allows him to take advantage of his buoyancy in order to gain extra velocity swimming slightly "up"? He would also technically have to cover more ground...but maybe the tradeoff is worth it, or maybe the swimming up using buoyancy theory I just came up with pales in comparison to the backwash theory you mentioned...?

VDH would pull ahead on the swim each length, but phelps would overtake him on each turn underwater. Until the final turn where phelps just switched it up another gear and popped out a good distance in front. Pieter had no answer and I think was a bit gobsmacked when interviewed after the race. So umm SwimStrength I have a question, say if I’m a Foreign Athlete and I train in the US for the next upcoming olympics but I want to represent my country how would that work do I have to race in my country for the Qualifying Time? Or like could I race in the US and Qualify there?

      Kick on the side. That will improve your upsweep and downsweep of dolphin kick. World class swimmers are able to generate same amount of force in the upsweep as the downsweep.

    i think what makes him win every time is how long he stays underwater on his push offs, as you can see he returns to the surface a few seconds after the other swimmers

    • @eatfastnoodle
      @eatfastnoodle ปีที่แล้ว

      every swimmer at Olympic, even national level can stay long underwater, but too long gets you disqualified, it's a very tricky thing to do. What he did is special but it's not merely dolphin kicking under water, everyone at that level could do it the whole 50 meter without surfacing, it's how to maximize the advantage (dolphin kick underwater is the single fastest move human can do in swimming) without breaking rules
