And banknotes were recovered and are affordable if you're into a good story. Two ocean liners collide and only one survives.

Is it called Paper Currency or Paper Money? Because it’s not paper at all. But I am a Paper Money Collector and like Paper Money Collecting as a Hobby. The Hobby is called Numismatics and if you collect you are a Numismatist. I also love History and work for a historical society and love collecting a Dollar or Dollars specifically the U.S. Dollar or is it the US Dollar? I have recently started collecting Obsolete Bank Notes or Obsolete Banknotes? Is Banknote one or two words. Today’s currency is made by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and issued by the Federal Reserve Bank which issues Federal Reserve Notes that have a green seal and green serial numbers. At one point in time they issued large size banknotes called Federal Reserve Bank Notes. The Treasury Department used to issue Treasury Notes, Gold Certificates, Silver Certificates, and Legal Tender Notes, United States Notes and National Bank Notes. There were two sizes of U.S. currency. They were the Small Size Banknote, Small Size Bank note and the Large Size Banknote, Large Size Banknote. Before 1996 they were called Small Head Banknotes, Small Head Bank Note and after that they were called Monochrome Bank Note, Monochrome Banknotes. Silver Certificates.
Very cool story!!! Thank you for sharing with us
Glad you enjoyed it!
Outstanding episode. Never knew of these, now I want one.
The story really does make it very cool! Go get it - but for the right price!
Wow what a story. Great stuff. Keep it coming.
Thanks Gunny - looking forward to tomorrow night!
Fantastic video! So much more to currency!
Appreciate that!
First! So cool! Thanks for the video Polar!
You're welcome and thanks for the support!
Awesome history and artifact! Great video, PC!
It really is cool. Been waiting to buy one for years.
I really like the presentation of the whole "set" with the booklet and bix and such. Also, Its cool you're into cruise ships! 😋 Great story, Dan and very qell presented. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Joe - yeah that box set is right up your alley! Thanks for the kind words my friend.
⭐What a journey!⭐ Excellent information and history. Hard to believe that the Stockholm is still around today! I always thought a DB Cooper note would be cool, but I have always found them too expensive. Thanks!!!
Thanks Ontario - interesting that you brought up DB Cooper...when searching for images for the Andrea Doria notes a PCGS Currency certified $20 came up and I thought about it and then yeah...budget!
Thanks Dan, happy 4th of July!
You're welcome and have a great Fourth also!
That's a great note made even more so by this great video. I hadn't heard about the Mr Gimble aspect before, nor the multi named Swedish-America liners continued history. Thanks for another great video!
Thanks @BanknoteDen! I hadn't either but I had to go down the rabbit hold of the Stockholm!
Hi Dan,
Awesome video and history on your Shipwreck bank notes. Glad you got one of them for a good price. Take care.🙏
Bill 😎👍
Got it at that Chicago show when I met you Bill!
@@PolarCurrencyGreat pick up for sure. I just started watching your Roundtable #10 with your new guest Tyler. Have to watch the rest later. Going golfing 🏌️♀️ soon.
Take care.🙏
😎🏌️♀️👍
A fellow scuba diver and good friend Joe D. died while diving on the Doria. She rests in 220 feet of water. It is a very dangerous dive. The wreck still claims divers. Just a little more historical content for you.
That's terrible! Yes, mentioned in the video 16 people have died - one just recently. Thanks for the addition and my sympathies to you and Joe D.'s family.
Very interesting story!
Thanks Emanuel - fascinating note and story at least to us!
Great great video. And I can confirm silver surfer is a nerd. But aren’t we all?!? 😁
Thanks Stu! And yes to the "Nth" Degree!
@@PolarCurrency takes two nerds to know one!
@@blkcrypto And I know more than two nerds...pickle ball is really cool though!
@@PolarCurrency 😉
hahahaha
Wow hands down I love this video, Dan first the picture that you showed was the west side highway and shipwreck currency is very awesome. I have not gotten into that but very cool. Great job
Thanks Big Apple - "Luxury Line Row" one of my favorite scenes to see pictures from with all those huge ships lined up together and it's West Side Highway!
Wow!!! Dan that’s so incredible! Just to have the notes survive is a miracle in itself….but then to be able to own one of the notes! Spectacular!! You definitely got “the bargain of the century “ with that purchase! Congratulations to you!!! Blessings always my friend! 😊✝️❤️
Betty - you are correct about surviving! Thanks for the kind words and blessing back to you.
@@PolarCurrency Thank you Dan. I’m now subscribed to your channel! 😊🙏❤️
This is awesome. Something to add to my list. Thanks for sharing Dan.
RNR - totally right up your ally (and mine) for us "eclectic" collectors!
A great video! A member of my coin club has written a significant article for the Numismatist on shipwreck banknotes. He presented to our club and had this shipwreck note. I think that I did a video on a shipwreck note. Maybe not.
Mine was the paper used in the printing of an Indian rupees note.
Maybe so!? Thanks Benjamin! Would you be able to locate link?
Incredible video. I love the silver surfer dig at the beginning. I love the educational format you guys have.
😊
Appreciate that and Silver Surfer is awesome and a great guy. Thanks for the kind words.
Hi Dan! This right there is an AMAZING video with some AMAZING information!! This banknote and only for 300 $! Incredible!! Gratulation to your purchase!! Best regards!!!
Thanks Roman - it's pretty cool and I though it was a good value!
Very Cool !! Now I want one !!!
Go get it! For the right price.
Great story and a very cool piece of history
Thanks GD - just discovered your channel thanks to Massabesic. Love it that your children spoil you and get your collector "problem"!
@@PolarCurrency Not sure I come even close to what you or Dean does but I do appreciate you stopping by and showing your support.
GD
@@GDSavingThePast You tell stories - it's not "just about the note or coin". At least that's what I appreciate.
@@PolarCurrency Thank you
Really like the lucite slab encasement of the note with PCGS label and the whole deal…very tastefully done and makes a really cool display piece! Must have been disappointing to open the safe to not find a dingle gold coin, though 😮
It is a very nice piece - on the shelf behind me! I didn't come across any "disappointed" statement. I think they knew that the first class safe had been cleared out that day in preparation for arrival in New York. I bet there was still hope and and sad faces...but at least there was something in there. Probably why it took so long to figure out what to do with notes and how to make some money back. The cost to encase, box, collateral materials etc, certification cost, seller % had to eat into the profits not even adding in the cost of the actual dive. If every note sold in 2006 for $500 that's 1.8 million. Thanks 4Kollector!
You had me at the title! hahaha Classic opening! Yes I am a nerd! But not as much as you! ;) I am not sure why I don't own one of these. I've had opportunity as well around the 275-300 range. Fun fact, there is actually a FANCY serial one of these as well! I know the guy who has it and it was finally offered to me for sale for 1400. I passed. It's a 4 digit repeater on a $1 silver. Pretty cool indeed. I did NOT know all the information on the Swedish American Line ship afterward. Wow some name changes! Great video Dan one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing and awesome pickup!
Thanks Silver Surfer and thanks for being a nerd like me - you are good company to be around. I get it. Took me a while and the price was finally right for me - and OK a fancy? But $1400 fancy? But still super cool. Appreciate you letting me have fun with you and you know I enjoy seeing what you come up with next. I ♥ Silver Surfer!
@@PolarCurrency Robert calderman is the owner of it haha. It took him even a while to finally say “ok I’ll consider selling you it” haha. But once the price came I was keen on it.
My Uncle and Aunt, Dave and Louise Hollyer, were on the Andrea Doria when she sank. Uncle Dave and Aunt Louise live into their nineties passing away a little over a decade ago. There is a documentary on the Andrea Doria where they can be seen being interviewed.
Wow! Never thought that someone watching would be related to someone ON THE ship! Incredible! There are many docs. on TH-cam about the Andrea Doria did you ever look? If you find it would love to see the video. Thanks for the comment and glad they were with us for a long time.
@@PolarCurrency This was a documentary I saw on TV in the nineties when I was channel surfing with the girl friend one evening. We came across the documentary and I said, "Wow, that's the ship that my Aunt and Uncle was on that sunk". Low and behold, seconds later into the documentary there was my Aunt and Uncle being interviewed. I jumped up and shouted "That's my Aunt and Uncle!!" The Girl (My nick name for her as she was 16 years younger than me) didn't believe the people on a documentary on TV were really my relatives. Well, a year later Aunt Louise and Uncle Dave visited us in So Cal and I introduced the Girlfriend to them. The Girl was shocked when she finally realized that I wasn't making it up. She commented, "Well, it is unusual to be watching TV and you're relatives come on." Well, ya, it is. Unfortunately, I do not know the title of that particular documentary, but it was a feature length documentary shown on commercial TV in the mid nineties. So if I come across it I will get a link. In the mean time, I think I will go and buy some more mid century currency! The Rickster
@@The-Rickster-29 Seriously great story. Thanks for sharing Rickster!
Questionable color HA! That’s awesome 👏🏻 So, the history and research is phenomenal, but it seems like you have an unhealthy obsession with ocean liners 😂🤣 Great video 😎🤙🏼
Thanks Dean and I would call it elevate to questionable obsession. But at least it isn't purple Morgan Dollars!
@@PolarCurrency 🤣 YES! 😆 Awesome as always 😎🤙🏼
Interesting. Certainly ticked 2 of your boxes.
Thanks GenX - yes it certainly did and I got to punish other people! See you tomorrow night.
It took 11 hours for the Andrea Doria to sink, unlike the Titanic, which took about 2 1/2 hours.46 people died on the Andrea Doria upon impact,5 crew members died on the Stockholm.Peter Gimble wasn't the only one to take those photos the day after the sinking,he was accompanied by Joseph Fox,who was senior editor at Random House, and amateur diver and photographer. Its quite ironic that the Titanic and her sister ships all sank. And yes, people have been profiting off the fateful deaths of others for as long as I can remember
Yeah 11 hours - thankfully she was close to shore because they never were able to launch the life boats because she listed so much and so quickly. (Note the Olympic did not sink but lasted until 1935 before being scrapped - along with the Mauretania, the sister ship to the Lusitania.) Thanks @667hodge always appreciate your support, insight and contributions to the history!
@@PolarCurrency oh yeah,I know it collided with the Hawke,it had severe damage, but never sank,my bad
@@667hodge How about it taking out a German submarine!!!! So much history and not enough video time!
Awesome pick up! I remember the Seinfeld episode where George was competing with an Andrea Doria survivor on who would get a coveted apartment. They each had to explain how much they suffered and the one who suffered the most got the apartment haha
I TOTALLY forgot about that. Damn - would have been classic to show that in video! Thanks for the comment.
@@PolarCurrency haha I believe George said the Andrea Doria "eased into the water like an old man into a nice warm bath"
You got a good deal at $300. Rare Coin Wholesalers is a ripoff. They should be named Rare Coin Above Market Priced Dealers
LOL! I did think it was ironic that Rare "COIN" Wholesalers was selling banknotes!
I would like a 9/11 banknote. Got a coin. But that not a note.
Great choice - Silver Surfer has an interesting "fancy" serial number video that is the date of 09-11-2001. th-cam.com/video/2vxx0qTDOFQ/w-d-xo.html Thanks for the Commment.
Nice! Have always been fascinated by shipwrecks. Have seen documentaries where they have restored the coins. Didn't realize that they restored currency too, so learned something new.
A lot of videos out there on TH-cam if you want to punish yourself more! A lot more to the story. Thanks Timothy.
