The videos without the acting bits are much better flowing and cozy to watch. You should do more of these, this is the best video you've put out so far imo!
Your new format is very enjoyable and I like seeing your wife and daughter. Your village seems quiet, how are you able to film without seeing anyone else? Bummer about the broken glass, but it is probably better it broke before you installed it. I'm off now to watch your wife's videos. Thank you for the link and for your Life Update.
I really like your true-to-life videos. A successful mix of how to do it, or how not to do it, enriched with useful information, tradition and sometimes a bit of mystery. Thank you.
I really love this sunset. I really hate the stinkbugs. I really hope you get to see your adorable family flourish and watch Japan's gov't finally get with the times and start attracting more young families.
It’s certainly a big problem, the older generations don’t want to make it easy for newer generations to take over these rural areas. Even Japanese are treated like foreigners and they refuse to sell their abandoned homes in some areas while their towns deteriorate.
I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while now. Funny enough my wife is also from Osaka, any tips on how you convinced your wife to take on this massive lifestyle change? 😅
OMG!!!! Fukuchiyama is essentially my honseki. It was the first place I was placed as an ALT, and I still consider it my origin in Japan. If I do ever finish my Japanese nationality process (I got through half of it several years ago before losing my job), Fukuchiyama seemed the most appropriate answer to that question from the Nationality Section. Just wild to see it here. At the time there were only six ALTs, so everyone knew us. It was overwhelming since Fukuchiyama isn't small. It's like 80K people. My own renovation should largely wrap up by the end of July. I need to do another update on my channel.
Fukuchiyama is probably the biggest town ''near'' me. It's about an hour and a half drive so I don't really visit there much but it has everything I need there. It must have been a nice town to live in. I love the castle there.
@@DIYJapan Used to live in walking distance of the castle and had a view of it from my balcony, which was quite cool. It was a nice town, still is, but I had to go where the work was, and that meant Kanto.
@@DIYJapan If "Fuk u chiyama" is the big city, "Holi sheet mo fo sob", must be the name of your little village (lol)....it looks like it's at the end of the earth...depression ville. shizzle! Do you see living there for the next 50 years? Looks like your wife works in the city...dresses like city folk.
@@DIYJapan I can believe it! If someone is able to have a source of income (like a handyman)...the quality of life (and time just slowing down) is better in a little place than in a mega city.
Watching your videos is like a breaaatthhh off freeeesssh air. I love how the simple things are so well documented in a very nice way that really makes the storytelling stand out. Thank you! PS. I love the bento box of your daughter
Pretty sweet baby you have. She makes me smile when you ask her if she is going to the mountain, and she nods and moves her hand in a very curious way. :-)
So sorry, once you score the glass with the tool, it will break along that line with a little pressure - this is what is supposed to happen. You do great work, do keep keeping on!
Yeah, but in this case I hadn’t scored it yet… maybe it seemed that way, I had just measured it and I drew a line to guide my cut. It really just snapped before even doing anything other than putting marker lines on it… maybe the marker was too sharp for it lol
Hello Danny glad you and your family have moved into your rural house 🏠 in Japan 🇯🇵. Good luck with your continued renovations, and glad to the family settling in well. Best wishes Simon and Beth ♥️👋♥️🏠
Is definitely a beautiful village and location! Always wanted to go to the northern coast, but never did. There is supposed to be an incredible protected natural island off the coast, no one is allowed there. What is the winter weather? Owner of neighborhood sushi shop in Tokyo used to go to the North Coast for one day once a month and purchase directly from the boats. Upon his return there was a line around the block waiting to enjoy his creations...I never happened to be there at that time ...could only enjoy the elaborate sushi experience stories!
Winter is cold and snowy at times. We have a few small islands that are no go here as well. Supposedly sacred. We can buy the fish fresh off the boats here too. Every morning the fish boats come in early and you can grab any fish you like as they unload them and pay next to nothing for it.
If you dwell on tsunamis then, yeah, probably could make you lose sleep at night lol There a couple tsunami escape routes near the house. We practice them every few months as a town!
Welcome back! You keep pushing the garden like my wife haha lol Maybe fall time when other areas of the house are squared out. We need to design something deer proof for sure... they are destroying everything around us.
@@DIYJapan wow that’s it? Here in Yamaguchi it was the entire summer 😢. The neighbor taught me a trick. Cut the top of a water bottle like a funnel. Flip it upside down and tape it together. Basically create a funnel into the bottle. Then just place the opening right under the bug and they literally fall right in. I added a little water to keep them from escaping.
That blows! Ours all died after two weeks... not sure why the purge ends as fast as it comes. But the onset is fast and furious... We could have a solid 50-75 stinkers coming into the house daily. Now, nothing.
Big cities are all void of Japanese culture. Has nothing to do with foreigners as much as younger generations just don’t have an interest in it. Countryside can be said to be the opposite, too “old” thinking and no desire to improve or change with modern times. Pick your poison.
Some people think stink bugs smell like cilantro. "The smell varies depending on the species and the person's olfactory senses, but it has often been compared to strong herbs and spices like cilantro and coriander. Interesting enough, the composition of the odor is comprised of chemicals commonly used as food additives and is present in cilantro."
You sir are a stink bug expert! It’s very common that Japanese people hate cilantro… my wife can’t even smell it… I love it and find no relation of the smell or cilantro to the stink bug… this type, unlike the green variation, downright smell atrocious!
There are jobs out here actually... because most people are old and retired, then there is a good amount of odd jobs available. Enough to live off of when you don't have many bills. I'm from the U.S.!
@@DIYJapan You look and sound a bit Euro. Must be an odd part of the U.S. you from. I suppose handyman jobs for the elderly could be a possibility. Good luck on the new adventure!
I'm from the southeast, Georgia. I've also lived outside of America for at least 12 years now and lived in Europe and Central America so probably where my southern accent gets really messed up lol
@@DIYJapan I'm from northeast Florida...I know a southern accent. lol Ok, that makes since....a number of years in Euro...I knew something was up...between the accent and the hat (usually only see people in Euro... Ireland...maybe Washington state, lol wearing those). How are you finding the difference...between S. America and Japan (much for civil and safe in Japan)?
Japan is very safe. South and Central America are god awful :( Beautiful people and land but next to nothing in terms of police presence. It's protect yourself with guns or wits or know when, where and how to be in every place and situation.
When I saw you try to fix the window with that glass sheet, I think it looks dangerous and I might try to find the light Acrylic sheet to replace that risk and then your VDO just Crankkkk glass broken😢 woww so stunned to me. Sorry to see that bro.
I do take care when handling glass like wearing gloves. But I agree, acrylic would work well but I already have a lot of spare glass… acrylic is expensive in Japan.
I am gọing to try to live in Kanagawa soon in the future, hopefully I can gain some knowledge like you to fix things around the house. I think you have a great skilled that fit to stay in Japan. I Enjoy to see your peacefully life style there bro. Cheers

Kinda does but we made sure she was ok. We’d push her back and she’d end up in the same spot. The cover is definitely nowhere near airtight. Very ventilated. It just looks scary in the video

Whoa, that tape trick is amazing! Similar to the stick tape traps you'd hang up to catch flies and gnats.
Right?! But when you have 20+ stink bugs roaming around the house at one time it becomes an inefficient method.
