  • BASC has decided to remove the valuable legal insurance from members as of July 31st 2020. Leaving 155,000 FAC and SGC completely exposed to the increasing number of legal issues shooters experience each year.

It's the only reason I'm a BASC member. That's another Direct Debit cancelled along with the BBC licence. They could recoup the cost just by getting rid of the pointless monthly magazine they send to my recycling bin.

Legal cover /Insurance is the sole reason my daughter and I are members. Same would apply to my wife when her FAC/SGC came through. If the cover goes- so do we.
Offer an alternative of binning the magazine and maintaining the legal cover, as individual choice.
Anything more than 13,000 (around 9% of the membership) cancelled memberships and they are losing more than they will save .
I suspect many more will be saying -
'bye bye insurance/legal cover = bye bye BASC , I have zero use for you if denied that cover.
There is a hell of a opportunity here for a keen insurance broker to organise a lucrative 'group' policy deal ...
Daft idea in all ways .

When you are researching shooting insurance, make sure it applies to all your disciplines, and at all the venues you shoot them. Are there any other insurance companies offering legal cover specifically on what BASC provides on Air weapons like BASC had been offering, viz. :-Following an air weapon kinetic energy test failure, an air weapon is alleged to be a Section 1 firearm I.e. over the prescribed energy limits. I am specifically looking for this particular cover as possessing an air rifle under 12 fpe can have potential of being on wrong side of law without one's own fault. Thanks

People should be aware that most legal insurance cover is a con. You are not automatically covered for all your costs. The legal cover is a separate underwriter who will decide the likelihood of success. Your costs may only be covered if you win but you may still have to cover the other parties costs. Be aware. This is why there are so small a number of people who have used it.

I don't know about other providers as I've never used anyone else but the NSRA cover seems pretty damn good. There is however a massive difference in cover between affiliate and life/annual membership. The affiliate membership isn't worth the small amount of money you save when you consider the huge benefits of annual membership.

Best to pay your money to Legal and general rather than BASC

They've removed LEGAL EXPENSES insurance. Most people (myself included) have BASC for the SHOOTING INSURANCE. That is still in place!

If you have an incident that means you need to actually USE that shooting insurance, you'll probably need the legal expenses.

    3:48 £82 year membership x 155:000 M
    12:710:000
So just under 13Million and they just thought why bother.
Well I have had to shoot pests since lockdown on farms near cattle. You was just about to pay the £82 because I’m getting to do this work more often.
    But I won’t bother now.
    Could have been
    £12:710:082
    But not NOW......😁

I think this clearly highlights how out of touch BASC are with their member base...

This is a damaging move on two fronts.
    1) The loss of legal protection leaves the shooter vulnerable, (as Calum explains).
    2) The potential resultant loss of membership at BASC sees an important shooters voice weakened, as BASC do far more than just 'provide insurance'.
I personally would be loathed to leave BASC but rather, I hope that it will pull its fucking head out of its arse and reinstate cover and stop treating it's members like twats!

Money can be saved by putting the members magazine online, has pressure been put on basc by the powers that be.

They are not for our community at all, they are just self pleasing and old fashioned today we need a modern day BASC NOW.

BASCs statement seems pretty reasonable, nobody uses the insurance, it's conditions don't result in costs being paid in most instances and the liability insurance remains the same??

I wouldn't say 75 people counts as nobody, I'm sure they saw it as invaluable.
