  • What does FRFR even mean? Doe we really need these "special speakers" or can we just use a normal PA Monitor speaker? What makes the Harley Benton FRFR speaker specialerererer than others?

    I once plugged in my MacBook running Line6 TonePort into... a Bose L1 column unit. OMG. The sound was a) amazing, b) evenly spread no matter where I was standing - close/far - nothing changed, c) even at ANY volume. So to me it was the greatest speaker for a guitar player - you hear yourself, others hear you, and you sound amazing.

    FRFR's focus on extended highs and articulation, not just increasing volume. Their primary purpose is to help the artist "monitor" their performance. You would not mic a FRFR but rather just hand an out cable to the sound person.

    Thanks for another great demo!
    For this plus a Mooer/HB simulator pedal, I'd get a totally gigable system for under $400. That can also be used at quiet practice volumes.
    But I could get by with a Mooer Blacknight (ENGL Blackmore) pedal plus this, for just about $300. That has an IR built in that could be usable.

    But for both units: Leave the cabsim off, all EQ on noon and tweak the tone in your modeler, so you can be sure to have the same sound via a PA/FOH or any other FRFR.

    The speaker emulation on this, and on the power cab fr that matter, is not simulating a mic'ed cab, like a loaded IR would on your modeller, just the speaker. It does sound different and makes it feel more like your amp model was in the room with you, great for stage volume when going DI to FOH.

    has anyone ever tested this with bass? does it work as well or are the frequencies only made for guitar?

  • @derekchapman5167
    @derekchapman5167 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a difference; a guitar FRFR speaker uses a corrective EQ curve to get around the inherent design of "lower cost" speakers. Active monitors, like those from D&B, are truly FRFR due to the amp, speaker and cabinet design and as such do not use a correct EQ curve.

  • @davidmultimedia2024
    @davidmultimedia2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The main difference is that a regular PA speaker is only FR (full range), but still has some coloration in the frequency spectrum (to "enhance" music experience). A FRFR speaker has a flat response (no coloration in the frequency spectrum), so amp modeling and IR/cab simulation will sound authentic as intended. Of course, it will never have the same projection that a true guitar cab has.

    • @jubuttib
      @jubuttib ปีที่แล้ว

      With the caveat that "flat response" is really difficult to achieve, and even super high end, supposedly flat response monitor speakers that can cost well over a 1000€ for a pair have some peaks and troughs in their response curves.

    • @davidmultimedia2024
      @davidmultimedia2024 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jubuttib True, but these little nuances are nothing compared to PA speakers in terms of coloration (the overall spectrum is still relatively flat). You will still hear and feel your amp modeller’s cab simulation as intended (won’t sound wrong, or muffled). That said, using PA speakers wouldn’t be as bad as using a guitar cab with a modeller that has the cab simulation enabled (full coloration through full coloration = way too much coloration = completely muffled).

I was thinking about buying one for my daughter (and subsequently for myself because she won't use it all the time ;) )for Christmas. What was interesting to me about this product is the fact that it can be loaded with 3rd party IRs. One of the differences between a PA speaker and FRFR designed for guitar modelers is that the speakers on a PA are designed to throw the sound at a much wider angle where as an FRFR speak is designed to throw the sound in a similar way to a speaker used in a guitar amplifier. If you look at most PA speakers the angle of cone is much shallower, whereas a guitar speaker is much deeper.

      I do not have this particular speaker, but I do have an Alesis Srtike amp for an e-drum kit and I tried running my analog pedalboard through it using a DI with a cab sim. Not sure how it would perform in live setting but sounded pretty good at home.

    It's not a P.A.speaker as the speakers are specifically engineered for guitars , they're only, like P.A. speakers in that they are full range flat response, ie. unlike a guitar cab speaker they don't add tonal changes when they are turned up just like a PA. speaker or home stereo speaker doesn't, I have a Headrush FRFR , brilliant, with my Positive Grid Bias Processor head.

      No sorry PA speakers are full range full response they are designed to do the same job as the Headrush or Harley Benton shown here. Some speakers are of course better than others or have higher or lower efficiency and there will be differences in the quality of the power amp too. The only guitar engineering going on here though is in terms of marketing.

      No, dude. No real benefit. Your set up is the better home set up. This would be good for someone wanting a touring/band rehearsal solution with their AX8. It’s what a modeller user would use instead of a cab, for live monitoring.

    Holy shit!!!! Ok, everyone, this is going to be a PSA. This speaker is a Behringer 12" powered PA speaker. Specifically the Behringer DR112DSP. Link: www.behringer.com/behringer/product?modelCode=P0E2Z
    The Headrush FRFR is nothing more than a rebranded Alto TS212. What is interesting is that the Headrush, which is a rebranded product sells for about $50-100 more than the Alto TS212. They are IDENTICAL. This Harley Benton FRFR is slightly different than the Behringer DR112DSP, but that could be due to the model year? The box, amplifier, and whatnot are the same though. The only difference is in the input layout. At least they tried.
    FRFR simply means Full Range Frequency Response. That's it. It is nothing more than a PA speaker. There is 100% absolutely NO DIFFERENCE between an FRFR model and a PA speaker other than its marketing and the box it is in.

    • @mixodorians12
      @mixodorians12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Harley Benton is this, m.thomann.de/se/the_box_pro_dsp_112.htm?o=0&search=1579850060
      But with Guitar Cab simulations instead of DJ EQ sets, so it can the be marketed as a Guitar Modeller Speaker to guitarists.
      These are both the same price.
      60 quid cheaper than the comparable 112 headrush speaker.
      Having a PA speaker in combination with a Guitar speaker isn't a bad thing at all. It is a great thing.
      Both the singer and the guitarist can use this, plus you can put backing tracks into it with its line in.
      Do the whole little gig with just this thing.

  • @mixodorians12
    @mixodorians12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think I am right in saying you cannot really mic a frfr speaker for review, that is pushing out Guitar Amp, Cab, IR and Mic simulations as it would be doubling it up through the mic you are using to record it, and not giving a true representation and discolouring and destroying what was intended.
    You will never find the sweet spot with the right mic to record it properly. This is why you would normally go straight into a audio interface with a modelling rig.
    You have to be in the room with the speaker to hear it at it's best.
    That is the dilemma when doing these reviews.
    So you just have to take his word for it and his word is pretty damned good, so when he says it sounds really great, it really does.
    Just not in this video.

    • @seanwalsh999
      @seanwalsh999 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree, its hard to capture the room and when you do it usually sounds like crap. That's why pro's spend so much time and money on room treatments. However I have never heard good results, with those binaural mic setups, except maybe those on the zoom recorder's.

  • @toneranger
    @toneranger ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice review Henning. This and the Headrush #FRFR make no sense at all. How am I supposed to get a stereo sound from my stereo cab simmed pedalboard to FOH ? The FRFR has 2 inputs (left and right I presume), and one output. The #Headrush #MX5 has no monitor out. I would need a separate monitor to hear a mix of my vocals and the rest of the band ? A 3rd input is clearly needed for a monitor mix. And even then there is no stereo feed from the FRFR to FOH but if there was it would then include the vocal mix. This is not for gigging and not well thought out at all. Just send your stereo (cab summed) board output direct to the sound desk and send a summed pre-fader mono feed from the desk to your stage monitor of your preferred #entiremix, not just the guitar, #makesmoresense.

    • @Gellert
      @Gellert ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy a $69 4-channel mixer and run your vocals, guitar, and FOH mix into your one monitor (from the mixer output) and you'd be good to go.

    Why would you want a Cab simulator you ask?…..I’ve just found a reason!…..I want to gig with my Spark40 so I thought FRFR maybe the way to go! The Spark40 doesn’t model guitar cabs only effects pedals so this Harley Benton FRFR might suit this purpose! 🤔
