How would you know? People are shady as fuck but give innocent people the benefit of the doubt untill proven guilty. The cruel reply to this is unwarranted as well, this guy say that probably means that he actually care for these fishes so chill with the nasty attack.
I live in Hong Kong and it’s actually normal to see the fish sold in bags. However, they look way healthier than fish from Walmart and are sold immediately that day. So I actually think it’s fine.
Yep, just like anything care matters. I'd trust a small specialized shop over a wall Mart type store any day because the small shop cares if their fish are sick or dying, it's their money at the end of the line... In a big "everything" store the fish and animals are left to that particular employees care and knowledge. There's obviously goods and bads in both, like everything.
I would like to share another good thing about bags; it reduces the chance of zoonotic infection being spread to fish or human. Also, a child or other person who is inexperienced with fish has no chance to accidentally contaminate the water by putting their hands in to touch, tease or pet them. As long as all conditions of the bagged fish are monitored & kept to a high standard, the bag acts as a health protection, a safeguard to fish as well as people. Thank you for this great & fair video! And thank you for explaining the mean practice of painted fish
You touched on some points about fish in bags. Like stress on fish and temperature. But I really wonder what they're doing with the fish after closing. Because if they are taking out fish and putting back in aquarium that also stresses them out because water temperature change . I just wish they didn't do this fish in a bag.
I made a video on this topic about fish being sold on fairs on my channel (dutch speaking). I totally agree that it is a temporary measure. The only problem i have with this way of working is that customers constantly start lifting the bags, that gives the fish stress. The bag itself is, in my opionion, not an issue, they can stay in there as long as 48h WHEN BAGGED PROPERLY
For some reason I feel proud of you as though you were my son :) Being so prestigiously invited is further confirmation of your accomplished career and reputation! Best wishes to you Doc :)
depends on the shop and the cost of the fish. i would assume most put them back inside for the night and select new ones to go out in the morning. when you have multiple shops on the same block selling fish you have to stand out someway. i think it is safe to assume they don't leave them as that would be a loss of profit and besides if it were the case that they just left them out then people would just wait till they closed to get free fish defeating the purpose of having them for sale at all. however there is an alternative where they simply use cheap fish for advertising and just wait till they expire to put out new ones....
i feel from a pet owner view its sad to see a fish in a bag if its not on its way to the buyers house... the large fish in a small bag is cruel. i understand that its different in each country.
As long as the fish get cycled out if they been out too long, and its very temporary, I suppose it’s ok to some extent, but definitely not optimal. Something like smaller boxes with simple filtration or atleast holes for air would probably be better.
If they pump pure oxygen into those bag with a little medicated water it'a 100% fine for a couple days, given they are not cook by the sun or freeze by ac. Compair to the tank, the bag looks like a condo apartment.
No, it's not cruel it's just temporary. It's cruel that most countries don't have laws which prescribe minimum tank sizes for the fish species they allow to be sold and that pet stores don't require their employees having a minimal knowledge of how to properly keep animals. Also, fish bowls and hamster cages the size of a football.... disgusting.
Well, you answered my question! I was looking for those fish with the colored spines, having never seen any like it before. I've searched for hours and saw your thumbnail. While I would love to have one if it were natural, I'm happy you informed me of the truth.
Do you know if, after the oxygen is used up, that pure oxygen is added to those same bags? Would that not keep them lasting longer in bags? And to help keep them healthier for a little bit longer? Are there ever any water changes done?? Thank-you so much for letting us to ask questions about how the [proper/healthy] way of keeping fishes in bags could or should be done. Again, than-you!
I was there this morning. No doubt I’ll need to go in the winter. The last two winters were very mild and temps generally stayed in the low 20s. I’ll take note to go when and if the temps ever drop below 10.
I don't like bags in general. The change in atmospheric pressure from handling the bag is more than people realize. Also the clear bags distort the fishes' views making it all the more difficult to avoid getting pinched in the corners.
I saw poor Betta in a small container with dirty water in retail store in US. They looked so depressed. I asked the worker if they releases in the night, but they said NO. They will stay in a tiny container till they were sold. However, they will have a big chance to stay in a small container again at homes, too. I have a Betta fish and I put him in 10 GAL aquarium
For a second there i thought the tetras were the glofish gmo tetras, but you can tell a difference by the died ones having a spot on there heads of there natural colors where the glo's are that color all the way. thanks for the info dr. loh!
Good afternoon, Perhaps this question is out of the context. It is regarding to the vitamin C and the water tretment. Is ok for reducing cloramines, nitrites, metals and prepare the water for fishes? Apart for resucing the stress on them? Thks from Spain.
Love your videos!! They used to have goldfish in bags with coloured water as prizes at fairgrounds in Scotland when I was little but that practice is banned now. The painted fish is very cruel as are large fish in a small bag. Be interesting to find out what they do with the fish at the end of the day. Interestingly I didn’t see any dead fish, go down the local fish shop in my town and there’s always a couple of dead fish in a tank or fish with bloat etc
The problem I see with those bags is that I don't believe the turnover is so high that every bag gets sold, meaning the fish that don't get sold will die. Putting them back into holding tanks is probably not possible or economical. The stores would sell them from tanks if they had tanks, so the bagging is probably a one way street.
I think it is cruel to have them on display like that. they should be in properly run tanks until someone is interested and wants to take them home. then you can bag them up but with an appropriate amount of air, depending on how long the trip home is. Edit: I just got to the part where he showed the aquariums of the store... that’s NOT how properly run tanks look like as I mentioned above. they are WAY overcrowded... heartbreaking to see them in such poor conditions
Great point .every creature looked after buy people should have a clean calm healthy enviroment with enough room to move about however keeping the fish out on the street is not so good for fish (stresses filtration and heat)and then health problems that can lead to dealth
I find it disgusting to see them like that.. but in those tanks there aswell.. In my country we dont have that. The tanks at stores here dont have many fish at once
I think it's a good way if you don't leave it for a long time. The fish will be stressed by the narrow space, but if the water quality, water temperature and dissolved oxygen are enough, the health of the fish will not be a problem.
Those fish in the bags looks healthy i have seen fish in some pet shops with in the pass 50 years in bad conditions. It all depend on the PET SHOPS whether they sell healthy fish or not.
I would love to visit these streets in Hong Kong...Bags are fine because they have a fast turnover and they couldn't handle the sales by fishing them out one at a time.
They probably have more space in the bag then they would have in the tank with the other fish. I had a dream about that street many years ago before I even knew it existed.

I feel like something at 2:57 , and having more than 2 fish in a bag is cruel. As long as the water in the bags are changed every night like most places do then it is ok. I don't think anything bigger than 3 inches should be in a bag however.
Hey Dr. Loh. I met with one of your colleagues, Dr. Veronique Lepage who works at the Toronto Aquarium in Ontario, Canada. She recommended I check your channel, since I don’t have the chance to learn about fish medicine in vet school. Really educational content, thank you for posting all the videos that you do! I hope I can learn and practice some basic fish medicine when I begin practicing!
I personally don't think it's cruel to bag fish for small periods of time. When they're only in a bag for a few hours at most they should be fine. My consern would be the build up of waste in the water when they're kept in those bags for longer than a few hours. In one of those bags were a few puffer fish aswell, this is not something I would personally do, since puffer fish can be aggressive towards each other and other fish species when kept in close proximity.
