Winter Bass Fishing - Lake Cumberland

- How do you find fish in a new lake? Where do you look and how do you target them? Come along with Matt for a day on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. With no outside information and little more than a map to guide the way, he covers water and locates feeding bass.
Whether you're in the PNW, the Midwest, or deep in the South, bass all behave the same way. Once you understand their feeding habits and basic movements they become highly predictable. Don't let a new fishery frighten you, its not that hard to find fish.
During the cold months we typically start by exploring the backs of deep pockets and creeks. If you can locate baitfish with your electronics you're already off to a great start! Pay attention to the depth of those baitfish and repeat the process in a different location until you find baitfish with bass around them.
Once you've located fish it simply comes down to confidence. Pull out your favorite lures, those baits you've got the most confidence in, and begin targeting those bass. If you don't have confidence baits look below, you'll find a break down of the lures and gear Matt had the confidence to use on his first visit to Cumberland.

Great to see this video,and I have spent a dozen 5 day weekends on houseboats on the Cumbie, watching the striper packs busting is almost torture sometimes, but I did get one deep on a ball head jig 1oz and a huge curly tail grub in White,and I took a magic marker and pepper specked the white grub, my PB striper 26.6 lbs. a ton of gorgeous 4-5 lb smallies too. I was Kentucky Born and Raised,and still go back 3-4 times a year to Cumberland and Kentucky Lake....You're one great fisherman Matt,on any lake,and glad you guys filmed so much of your Ky , Tenn trip.

Great vid as always. I had a question. I’m sure y’all are firmiliar with Gene Gentson (flukemaster). He does a live stream on Friday evenings where u can tune in and ask questions an what not. Anyway have you and Tim ever thought about doing that once in awhile. I think a lot of anglers would tune in. I know y’all have very busy lives with making the vids and everything else but maybe like once a month have a live stream? This would be cool

Ive taken a few striper guide fishing trips at Lake Cumberland and boy have they been successful! Last time we went we brought my entire dads side of the family (about 30 people) and we caught enough fish to feed everyone.

Same thing happened to me in East Tennesee last year. Didn't have any mono or braid or topwater in the boat, and they were chasing bait on top!

Great vid nice to see you using low weighted line I’m down in Miami and fish the suburbs and the Big Cypress preserve where my grandfather built a cabin in 62 and I fish a levee we use to get out there and it’s insanity right now if I told you how many bass I caught yesterday you’d call me a liar but vegetation is almost never a problem so mostly because of peacock bass I strictly use 12lb mono anything less they tend to pop it right when you go to land them. Big fan keep me coming and hit up Florida!!

Maybe a video on what you take when traveling? 3-5 rods, and a tackle bag of baits for anywhere in the country. Sounds like the average anglers set-up.

Try a white willow leaf war eagle spinner with a double tail chart grub as trailer. I usually get them to crush it. Spots especially with silver blades. It a finesse spinner. 🤙🏻

You guys should fish Sooner Lake in north central Oklahoma if you like striper fishin it’s a pretty cool deal it’s heated from a power plant so it’s primed in the colder months

You all should try out cave run lake in kentucky. Its a challenge to fish but there are some large bass in there

@@tacticalbassin yeah, ive caught many muskie there while bass fishing, and some larger bass. Thats my home lake and what i usually fish during my high school bass tournaments.
I have a question....I live in Texas and fish in heavily pressured gravel pit pond it has a lot of hydrilla and underwater grass so snagging is really common lately we have been having a lot of rain so the water is murky but the ponds water is originally clear. My goal this winter is going after a couple of 8 pounders that are said to be out there so I was wondering if you have any suggestions on a lure that i could use specifically for that monster? I haven't got a bite all October I usually catch fish from 1-4 lb on rage cross or finesse worm. I am new to this so any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Bro , for the spoon combo, that's not a Zodias. And what was the rod you used for the Rover? GLX?
That was an Expride I was using but the spoon doesn't require the sensitivity so I recommended the Zodias as a better option. ;-) The rover was on a GLX 3 power.
