  • The famous visual approach for landing in Santos Dumont airport, considered one of the most challenging approaches in the airliners world. High elevation terrain surrounding the airport, variable winds ,many birds and one of the shortest runways an A320 operates ( 1300 mts )
    Cant get tired of this

      @@craigie13 Hahaha. I have been living in Rio since birth. For the past ~15 years, been working in one of those buildings underneath this video, from where you can follow the whole approach with your eyes. So I knew exactly where the runway was BUUUT I'll admit that I noticed, it will only appear to you at the very end!
      Also, the right-hand pilot complains somewhat of the vultures in the way. "Opa opa opa -- ... desgraça" i.e. "whoa whoa whoa - ... aw nuts".

    You have to get down quickly here. Notice on almost all videos you see of this approach, the 50 feet callout is before the threshold. Floating on the flare is not viable here. You have to get the wheels on terra firma and the spoilers out well before a third distance down the runway. Both directions are difficult for different reasons, but both usually require steep turns well under 1000 feet, and this one has the turn completed at only 400 feet! Kudos to the captains who fly this approach daily.

    • @ydl6832
      @ydl6832 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ordinary people may not realize how demanding it is to make such a sharp turn under such low altitude (calling out 500 feet in the turn) and low airspeed. When flying low and slow, you don't have full control over the aircraft (i.e., the plane is not as sensitive and fast-responding to inputs as with a faster airspeed), and the risk of stalling is high. In order to make that sharp 180-degree turn, the plane needs to bank with a really wild angle, which will cause the airspeed and lift force on the wings to drop even more. This can potentially lead to a stall in which the plane falls out of the sky. Due to the low altitude, there is simply no time for recovery. In order to make the turn safely, you have to constantly monitor the airspeed and altitude and increase the throttle if necessary. Another challenge is that you have to line up perfectly with the runway when you finish the turn, which demands precise aileron and rudder control. You don't want to approach the runway with an angle, right? In addition to that, we have a very short runway on which you have to land early in order to come to a stop without overrunning into the water. So you probably have to go extra slow with full flaps and fly at the edge of stalling. Moreover, you cannot land too hard for the sake of the comfort of the passengers, so you may have to hit the runway with the perfect combination of airspeed, altitude, and vertical speed. Despite all these, the pilot managed a pretty soft landing on this short runway in the video, which was quite impressive to me.

    I flew into Santos Dumont quite often during the 1980's via the Ponte Aerea (Air Bridge) on a Varig Lockheed Electra. The landings were usually the other way (towards Pao de Acucar) and were a bit nerve wracking especially in bad weather. Their service was every 20-30 minutes and was walk- on and walk- off with no allocated seating. We used to go to the tail of the aircraft where they had lounge type seating parallel to the body of the aircraft facing each other. Not sure if they still fly the Electras.

    I flew in there a couple of times for the Carnival, the approach is gorgeous with Sugar Loaf in the distance, other than that, it's just another big city on the ocean, but it has a couple of nice beaches and a great song about one of them (Ipanema!) As a GA pilot, I thought it was a bit tricky landing there due to some hazards (like a bird strike, a short runway and busy traffic), but pilots usually handle it well, if they come in and out of there often.

    • @georgesealy4706

      @MJLeger-yj1ww 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgesealy4706 That, my friend, means that things are almost always routine so it's no big deal, but many unexpected things can happen in aviation. In the case of airlines, passengers rarely know about it but when things are NOT routine, due to weather or any malfunction of the airport equipment, or the aircraft itself, or the ATC rarely makes mistakes but all those thing CAN happen. Sometimes things look good and then something happens and missed approaches must be made, go-arounds (aborted landings) must be made, and it's usually handled very because they practiced all kinds of things in the flight simulator and can deal with it well. But humans are not perfect and rarely mistakes are made. Pilot error is STILL the cause of 85% of airline crashes. Thankfully most know how to handle emergencies and they get the aircraft down and sometimes passengers don't even know there was an incident, the pilot merely tells them "we'll be delayed a bit" Air travel is still the safest way to travel so don't worry about it.

There's certainly more people traveling by air than ever before, and more aircraft, so that is often the reason for the delays at the airports, along with weather sometimes and aircraft mechanical delays but those are in the minimum, pilots know the weather because they all have radar right in their panel in the flight deck now!
