@Matthew Cross ? The length is information that is available anywhere and you can see at the end where the runway cuts off that its just water. Swiss001 inst the only person to know this information
Great video, I'm 72 now, in my younger days I flew between SDU and CGH Ponte Aerea many times, in those days it was by Lockheed Electra II, I miss those days very much, it was painful when VARIG first introduced the 737 on that route! All the "romance" of the turbo prop died that day, very sad day indeed for many of us!
the approach on the other side of the runway is more beautiful and "stressful" for the pilots but in fact, it's nothing big, there are no accidents with deaths at this airport since the 60's, the few that had it also have very little relationship with the approach of the runway too
Definitely the most beautiful approach in the world, would love to repeat it again myself (the weather at my 1st visit did not allow to film it properly). Great video, perfect daytime and weather for filming.
Been many years since I experienced this landing but have never forgot it, thanks for the memory. I also really enjoy landing and taking off from Los Angeles CA, with the similar combination of mountains, water and beautiful city spread out across a basin. Great video!
@@sandwich6284 Please don't talk nonsense son! There were never any major accidents at Santos Dumont, the approach to this airport is the most beautiful in the world and it is always a pleasure to get there. Get to know Rio de Janeiro one day, it's worth it!

Was about to say rough landing, then I saw the thousand foot markers on the opposite side of the runway. Took me seeing the sugarloaf mountain while taxiing to realize which airport this was. Nice landing, and beautiful view.

Beautiful approach and marvellous views of the city (also at the end of the video), but looks like very little margin for errors there. Hats off to the pilots.
Yes. Short runway. 1300 meters. The first officer can not landing or takeoff there. In an emergency he need take airplane to Tom Jobim International airport because of that rule.
As an American citizen and resident of California, I can agree with everyone that this airport approach over the bay is much better than the approach at San Francisco Airport
The last part of the video, I didn't expect that. I mean it wouldn't have been an unusual video on its own for someone thinking of touring around Rio, but it was an usual addition to the end of a flight landing video
Olhando do alto, o Rio de Janeiro realmente é muito lindo. Pena que olhando com os pés no chão, a realidade é bem diferente..... Obrigado pelo vídeo e parabéns pelo canal. Abraço do Brasil........
I like to imagine the people that didn't realized the landing strip was right in front of the plane and getting nervous with the plane getting ever so close to the water before entering the airport
Swiss001 didn't know about the SFP (short field performance) breaking systems that b737's and a320 must have to operate in Santos Dumont Airport. There are other regulations like related to the landing weight of the plane, and so on... Santos Dumont is more of a secondary domestic Airport, being the Tom Jobim Airport the one for bigger planes and primary domestic flights. Brazil is quite well ranked on ICAO safety ranking, so no worries, this airport doesn't need to be closed like swiss001 wrongly said on his video ;)
Great approach for sure, but I think the approach for 20R is far better. No room for error from either way. Great city, though a bit wild. Must be going crazy with the virus lockdowns.
Nice video, although none of the approach is over Rio or its famed beaches, instead its Praia da Barra de Maricá and Niterói, followed up by Guanabara bay and a typically "firm" landing on the short runways of BRJ. Oh, and thats not a 737-800, its a 737 MAX
Withouy doubt, one of the best approaches in the world!! Rio!!! in my ranking, the others are Velana airport in Male, Maldives, and Rarotonga airport in Cook Islands
That sweet feeling of looking out of your airplane window and seeing your holiday destination
For those saying that was a hard landing: Santos Dumont have only 1320 meters of length, the clearway is made of water (rs). No room for errors!
@Matthew Cross ? The length is information that is available anywhere and you can see at the end where the runway cuts off that its just water. Swiss001 inst the only person to know this information
@Matthew Cross i lived 3 years in the Escola Naval, the island at right of the runway. The length is correct, I used this airport dozens of times.
@Matthew Cross No, from the Brazilian's Airspace Control website, www.aisweb.aer.mil.br/?i=cartas, just type "SBRJ" on the ICAO box and get the ADC.
Gringada quer duvidar da gente porra kkkkkkk
In fact, only captains are allowed to land on this runway.

Good thing people don't clap during landing in Brazil. BUT this stunning approach surely deserves applause

This is a really good view from behind the wing (my kind of view from behind the flaps extending out) at the final landing..Nice video bro👍

Breathtaking approach, hard landing.
Firm, rather than hard. There's no time to do a pretty, long flare. Got to get down quick!

The runway is short, making a perfect landing there is not an option, it is so risky that only captains are allowed to do it.
