Who's your favorite WSOP Main Event winner of all time?
Hellmuth
Stu Unger
Love Stu Unger but also have to endorse Doyle Brunson.
Scotty's win of course.
it;s not even close stu unger imagine how good he would have been he played stoned out of his mind almost all the time!!
Jamie Gold's unique style was simply running like a luck-god for one tournament. High Stakes Poker highlighted how outclassed he was at the elite level.
If you have aces, I'm in deep sh*t
A successful talent manager and poker player needed a $10k backing arrangement. Doesnt add up.
Scandal? He just proved he’s not someone you do business with.
Yeah it wasn't a scandal but an interesting story. Since he did his friend dirty on top of being an amateur who got extremely lucky in the main event, it gave the illusion that he must've cheated somehow.
His father was dying at the time and he (according to him) was working on the taxes before giving him his share.
Gold is one of the most obnoxious players in the game. He is also, a Welch who had to be taken to court to pay up to his backer.
Just found your channel bud! Awesome content, I've been binge watching the whole controversy playlist. Very comprehensive break downs of everything! Best of luck on the climb 🍻
Wow, thanks so much. Really appreciate this!
You know Jamie did an interview where he said he would give the dealers 1million as a tip. That video was lost as soon as he won.
Her won lol
Don't like him and never did but his WSOP will was the most dominant WSOP win I've seen. He basically dominated the other players emotionally.
LOL @ all these opinionated people, so, what is it, everybody is up in arms about? Some random guy, getting a mate to back him for his entry fee? Wow, that's so bad? That's terrible, lock him up! Did he cheat? No, but he got someone to pay his entry fee! So what? LOL
@@hotstepper887 The "So what" part is that he was trying to stiff that someone on the six million he owed them. When that guy staked half the buy-in, neither one expected him to win the whole thing, but 50% is 50% no matter how you slice it. He was the one who was trying to welch on his obligation.
@@LucianDevine And now do tell us what that has got to do with anyone else other than the two of them? Tell us all how that in any way affected the outcome of the game? Tell us all why the Poker world should have any interest in what anyone does with their winnings? If, as you claim, that is the case, then that's something that will go to court in due process. Between the two of them. That has nothing to do with Poker.
@@hotstepper887 Well, depending on who the backer is, it can affect how they play the game and how aggressively they play against certain players. As a whole though, I don't have any problem with players selling pieces of themselves.
@@LucianDevine Exactly … Even though the truth is, this game today is completely corrupted. All poker sites are unplayable, well unless you're just a mug, that is.
Every deck is stacked to deliver action hands. You'll see each player in for the flop catch a small part of each flop, only for someone to lose to a miracle river that hits all the time, (against you), whenever you've got your chips in.
The less educated among us, will tell me they hit more, because in online poker we see more hands being played? LOL @ that rubbish. You only need common sense and a history of playing poker, to notice the cheating, and the complete change in everything about the game today, to how it once was. (it's without question the most manipulated game in this world today). Along with online slots, Bingo, etc.
It just seems many people have not worked this out yet? And you'll see some of those people, hilariously and so stupidly standing up for the poker site, and many will actually call you names, (for telling them they're being ripped off)? This is the level of intelligence, we're talking about today. LOL.
You can play the tightest poker of your life, and you'll always be a loser, why? Obviously, because you'll never win when it counts, when all the money is in. You'll be forced (with the nuts) to get your money in before the turn or river card.
For example, you can flop a straight flush, and amazingly someone will bet at you, and whatever you do in reply makes no difference, you can get it all in on the turn, holding the nuts, only to see the same suit hit the river? And of course, your opponent has the higher end of the straight flush, he made on the river?
Not once, not twice, but every single time (when you've got your chips in) It's commonly known as a con, a rip-off, and all these people we see and hear deny that? Are either idiots, or getting something from it.
Jamie gold had a fluky run…he was never very good
Better than he was given credit for I would say
Speech play. BIG part of his game. In other words,
World class BSer
Gold got hammered in those after dark poker cash games.
That's what you need tho to win the main event let's be honest
he is good
Jamie after winning the Main Event he thought he was a genius.
That's why he got invited on High Stakes Poker! They couldn't wait for this donkey to sit down!
if you run like God you can go deep in tourneys.I dont think his bluffing was especially good before or after the main event. Him wanting to be the best bluffer ever clearly didnt materialize.
Amazing video as always brotha!! Keep up the great work!!
Really appreciate this, thanks!
great video.. only issue I have with is.. anyone who wasnt big into poker back in the 2005 era.. wouldnt realize that Gold was a nobody until the Main event win. and those clips of him playing high stakes with Farhah and Antonius are all after his win.. but your video makes it seem like he played those games prior to his win
It’s true. And if you go back and watch that main event.
It doesn’t even show how Gold got all his chips. It just randomly shows him and Lon and Chad say here’s the chip leader by like 10X the amount at the time.
I always remember seeing Gold play in High Stakes Poker and thinking that all those players were just licking their chops to get some of that money.
@@jacobpule6390yeah they destroyed him on HSP lol
he was broke within 2 years
Players should have a paper contract for backing. Its crazy to have a verbal for 12 mill.
💯
Very true, but Gold's associate must have figured they were good friends and he would never pull a stunt like that.
@@curthennig9448 People change when big money enters picture. Watch people, who you think you knew, during the settlement of an estate.
I wouldn't even count this as a scandal. This video is for sure clickbait which is fact but this being a scandal is far fetched.
Exactly. I feel dirty even commenting on this channel because it causes "viewer engagement" this was not a scandal at all and no pro players ever really said anything bad about it.
Stop it Pokerboom, find better content to "report" about
You have great narration. Keep going.
You didn’t really explain why the backing agreement cast doubt on the legitimacy of his win
To win a Main Event you have to get super lucky and have a great run of cards and when you get unlucky at times you have the chips to suffer losses to one's stack and that's how Jamie Gold won. If Jamie was great, we would have seen Jamie make more great runs in WSOP events.
WSOP declined once Jamie won the title. it was never the same after that. they had an amazing run with Moneymaker, Raymer, and Hashem, then that joke got all the luck, pulled out a victory, and the production quality of the show completely declined.
You lost me when you said Jamie Gold has natural poker talent. Dude luckboxed his way to a World Series championship.
You can only luckbox so far, buddy.
@@doubleoblit Yes. He did.
@@orourkedafootball people like you never make it in life because you make up fairytales about how other people's success is based on luck.
You can't win the Main Event through luck alone, dummy.
You dont cash seven major tournaments in a year with just luck.
Tons of winners win sooooo many flips.
Silly question, or three....why is it WSOP's business if a player has a "backer(s)"? Shouldn't that remain between the backer and player? Is the WSOP going to split tournament winnings according to private agreements?
I'm trying to figure that out myself. Why is disclosure needed? They would never know anyway if everyone keeps their mouth shut.
Duh ...collusion.
@@igor-cl9jl How?
@@oldschooldiy3240because the backer could be another player in the event - or even more likely, a backer can back multiple players - if i had 100k to spare i could back 10 of the best or most likely players that will make it to the final table - once i have ‘my guys’ in the game i could start influencing them on how to play especially if you have a few of your players on the same table.
@@Chekmate99 And? Even if all you say happens, you still have 10 players competing against each other! Let's say they all conspire to to help each other instead, 2000 other players are against them and the odds of being in a position to help are near zero, on top of all that, if they are found out, the penalties are more than the risk! And as a backer, all you are doing is paying their way in, if they are "the most likely to make it to the final table", you harm yourself by trying to influence how they play, pretty short sighted if you ask me....
Why does he have to disclose that he borrowed money for the entry fee
I remember hearing it was his backer wanting exactly 6 mil, and didn't want to hear about taxes being involved.
I bet the settlement was probably for whatever he had left after losing a lot of the money
Do a video on 2002 main event champion - Robert Varkonyi
* The last main event champion before the poker boom of Chris Smith
Great idea
Why would it matter to the wsop if a player had a backer or not?
I remember about a year after he won the big one he was on TV in a high stakes cash game playing against the toughest lineup imaginable. Chip Reese Doyle Barry Greenstein Johnny Chan Bobby Baldwin David Oppenheim I believe were all sitting at that table, and I'm sitting there thinking wow, does Jamie Gold think he has some kind of edge playing in this game? I'll have to look that one up and try to find out how he did. The only thing I remember is he wasn't running over anyone on that table even though he was trying to.
Most of those lineups were pretty good and Gold had no business being there. I wonder if there was a running total on how much he lost in that one season(2007 sounds about right).
I totally remember that.
I remember saying I’m sure all those pros were just licking their chops at a chance to get some of Gold’s winnings.
@@curthennig9448 Because his strategy of "I'm going to tell my opponent what I have, and they won't believe me.", didn't work on the pros like it did on all the fish. Then, when he didn't have the huge stack to bully people around with, he just got tapped.
What ever happened to Todd Brunson?
I wanted to take my picture with JG at the bike casino. After I cashed out my chips I asked him for a picture with him but my camera failed at the moment . When I restarted my phone my camera still wouldn't take a picture . I gave up and said nice to meet you Mr gold and left .
I guess I'm just clueless. So why does Gold not disclosing his backer put a black stain on the poker world? Who gives a shit how or who gave him the money? It's not like it was some cheating scam where he cheated his way to winning or something. I don't understand.
Forgot to mention he was at wsop 2023
Why the fk did he need to be staked
💰
Why not? Liability to only loose half is worth it for most skilled players
How did this give him any advantage playing the game? It's just between him and his backer and the court if necessary.
With that much money on the line... It should definitely be in writing.
Best poker channel in the business and a sultry VoiceOver artist!

It's sketchy that he got backing then refused to pay for it.
Also that he never disclosed then settled
Doesn't seem to indicate integrity
What happened with the law suite?
I remember him getting an amazing run of cards to win that WSOP. How is he considered a great player?
Gotta be more than just an amazing run of cards to win the main event
@@PokerBoomYT Jamie's long term success, or lack of, says more about his actual ability. Daniel Negreanu, Justin Bonomo, and others are far better examples of great poker players. Reference your own video, beginning around 6:30.
Great player, probably not. But still a good player. You need more than luck to win the WSOP.
@@denisfolcik1373 Not even a good player. Phil Ivey never won the Main Event, yet is considered by most professionals to be one of the very best. Phil has shown this to be true over an extended period of time, which is more impressive in it's veracity.

In the old days, when the mafia owned the casinos, they often backed players who didn’t dare cheat them. You also better stay in line while playing or a hole would be dug for you in the desert. Maybe we were better off with those guys running the show?
Not a good judge of what can actually happen to people who think there untouchable!! 👍
How is having a backer, 1% or 100% staked, disclosed or not a controversy in any way? Makes zero sense.
It’s a good question
Jamie was the reason i got in to poker. My dad recorded the wsop wich was on in Netherlands around 2 3 am. Watching with my dad at 11 yrs i got in to it with his table talk and the table image he build.
Loved this video, great one!
Thank you! Appreciate you being here
Oh you’re the one that liked him
2:36 "Gold's poker dominance evidenced by 7 in-the-money finishes"... my 78 year old grandma finished in the money 3 times last year.
Tournaments are smoke and mirrors indeed.
that Jamie gold run was sick.
Jamie Gold was a vastly inferior player next to his colleagues. Ironically, the structure of the WSOP with its massive number of entrants (almost 9,000 in 2006), reduces itself to a glorified lottery ticket more than the emergence of skilled play. Chip stacks have a gravitational pull about them which have an inclination to vacuum a tables chips with a comparatively low threshold of skill required to manage it. This is why virtually no poker pro ever won the event during its brightest years. This also why you’d generally see the chip leader at the final table be anywhere from 5x to 10x over the 2nd chip position. To progress in such a structure, you must win your 50/50 coin flips. Win enough of those at the right time and you eventually earn an immunity from such tournament life trials with a 10x or 20x stack. The display of Gold’s actual poker skills came to light on the cash game series “high stakes poker” where all the pros viewed him as a fish, placating him to continue remaining in the game as he weakly conducted himself in search of their approval to be considered “one of them”. He never was and they all, including Gold knew it.
Now backing is 100% legal with even sites promoting it.
Totally. It’s a new era
Sportsmanship, and poker do not belong in the same sentence.
Are people also shocked when a scorpion stings?
They backer didn't give him half. He gave him 100% of the buyin for half of the payout which is a freerolling deal for Gold and he still tried to fuck him. And the guy was a friend and business partner. Not some random person.
Well, we all know the ethics of an entertainment manager and producer are. They have none
this is why you sign a contract
I didn’t learn shit from this video. And no shit he hasn’t been able to accomplish much after winning the main event it’s kinda rare to win that again.
You seem nice
everyone i know who watched poker back then which was a dozen or so people that I played with all the time thought it was rigged.
Why is it a scandal though or a blemish in the poker world? Who cares who pays the buy in fee?….. Does someone paying your buy-in suddenly make you a better player? I dont see what one has to do with the other.
I don't get it either.
Money goes to most peoples heads
Hey Kyle! How are you doing today 🙂?
Hey Jamal! Thank you for being here :)
Pretty low rent taking backing from someone then welching on paying them.
I can't help but laugh at how this video tries it's best to paint Gold as a good poker player. He will never win another big tourney.
was never impressed by his play or actions at the table.
Gold also promised the dealers $1 million dollars if he won. That year, the only person at the final table to who tipped was Allen Cunningham, who came in 4th. So there is a whole different group he promised and didnt deliver to the same year. I wonder how much he gave Johnny as well.
Im sure he was being sarcastic.
Who would give up 1 million dollars to the dealers.
Why was Cunningham tipped?
Is that true that only Cunningham tipped? That's awful of the rest. As a former dealer so I'm biased but I find it shameful that winners, especially of such high sums, wouldn't tip the dealers.
So does every dealer get a piece if the winner tips the dealer who dealt the winning hand?
@@jacobpule6390 if it's like any other poker room it's a pool that gets split between all the dealers distributed evenly based on time spent dealing. So any dealers who deal in the final rounds will likely get a bit more just due to more overall hours worked during the tourney.
@@jacobpule6390No, but it's costumery to throw them a bone. Altho I as a pro only tip a dealer for exeptional behaviour. It's absurd to me that pokerdealers should be tipped more then other professions.

Jamie was the biggest suckout player I've seen on the WSOP.
The first few years (2003 on) had plenty of unlikable players.
It’s considered bad/improper to not inform others you’re being backed?
poker has come back a little bit but this scumbags' win was the first crack in the downfall of poker's popularity.
All skill in hold em. Proof of that is the fact that the least skilled player I've ever seen bested the biggest field for the biggest prize ever 😂😂😂😂
sued for half his winnings which was agreed upon before the WSOP. not all of it.
You have no idea what you're talking about. Jamie was NOT sued for all of his winnings. He was sued for half of his winnings. The reason is because he promised half of any winnings to the guy who gave him the entry ticket. You should learn the basic facts before you lie and make videos promoting fake news. Lastly, Jamie is a horrible poker player. He got super lucky. Similar to winning the lottery.
And also those cash game sessions were AFTER the main event win. Clips are chronologically all mixed up. I agree that research for this video was poor.

He just ran super crazy good that year. It’s not hard to win when you are hitting every flop early and take a giant Chip lead. He was smart enough to keep adding pressures on smaller stacks with bluffs and hitting flips. His actual skill was shown in cash games and other torns to follow
He had a crazy good "talk" game. He talked ALOT of pros into making mistakes. Ones that should have known better too. Yeah, he was running so smooth on water, but he was undeniably good at manipulation too. He really did go right up to the limit of crossing the line. The most notorious moment is when he flashed that Jack to his opponent while bluffing.
There are some old pros that believe this was the last year of REAL old school poker...before it got commercialized to hell and back, and I tend to agree. Now we have month long breaks for the final table (dunno if that is still a thing, but I always felt it was a horrible idea), coaching, teaming up, sponsorships, etc. It has essentially become the current state of Black Friday shopping: In name only. I really do miss the rawness of what the WSOP was.
Stating the obvious .I think you will find anyone who wins the WSOP main event runs super good .
That's not true. His table talk, while annoying, compelled players to make stupid calls against him. Give a regular quiet player those same cards and they do not win that tournament.
This was almost 20 years ago minions LMFAO
Gold wasn’t a bad poker player

12 million win but after the tax man... 6 million... BTW how did Gold not have the 10K buy in at this time. I also don't think Gold's reputation was hurt by this backing controversy. His reputation was hurt because he was a jack ass at the table.
I think it's just more if you dont actually think you'll cash for anything big, it makes sense to let someone pay the 10K even if you have the money. Even getting to 20K (the breakeven) is really hard to do in the main event so it's not really a bad bet.
