    I wish people would stop saying high concept films are douchey/ pretentious. There's no shame in liking movies with a deeper meaning...
    That being said:
    When she touches the walls and sees the heart, that's her heart, it's the heart of the earth and the state it is in.
    As far as the yellow powder in the water goes, and this is just a theory, but I think it is supposed to represent the sun?? After consuming it, she is replenished and brought back to health, the same way plants are when they get sun and water ? If anyone knows the official answer let me know !

      Jennica that's my best guess as well. Even the director teases that he'll never tell what that orange solution officially is. And I loved this movie. I understood what was happening at the end so I was crying pretty hard because it's so very sad. I've said in a few places (online, reviews, etc) that I loved this movie and it truly moved me and I got so much hate and got called so many names it was pretty bad. I feel sorry for the people who didn't "get" this movie because it's very special and has deep meaning we could all learn from.

      I completely agree! I found myself randomly crying at one part cause it had such an affect on me. All I can say is that I hope some day it is a classic that upon its initial release was panned by critics and audiences like Psycho or blade runner

    It's one thing to complain the movie is just metaphors/allegory, but you can't deny the director delivered an incredible experience, restrained/focused in it's execution.

      Taylor, I live in the deep south. I saw this in a theater of thirteen people, myself, and a friend. By the time the film ended, there were thirteen extremely upset people leaving the movie theater with me, manically laughing at the back of the theater, and my friend sitting next to me, completely stunned. That should give you a picture of the reaction I had at the first showing.

    From my recollection of past Double Toasted reviews, I recall Korey stating that he was an atheist. This might go a long way to explaining why the religious symbolism in this film was so obvious to him, as it was to me, as I am also an atheist. It is NOT because we are more insightful than your average viewer. However, as atheists, we are more aware of religious criticism, and are particularly receptive to criticisms of the Judeo-Christian conception of God. Hence, when a film like this explores the relationship of God to humanity in such a negative light - portraying God as a narcissist who relishes in praise above all else, and it portrays his followers as opportunistic, violent, and self-serving - we could immediately recognize it for what it is. For someone who has a more positive view of God and religion, or who is indifferent to religion, they might not so readily make that connection.

    • @weirdy8
      @weirdy8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      As someone who's part of the former (im presbyterian), those parallels I also noticed and it made me hate the film. Not because it compared god to an attention hungry writer (which I saw as a parallel to Aronofsky himself), but because the movie shoves these events without their context. They're just used as a skeleton for Aronofsky to throw in metaphors about the environment, domestic roles attached to home, home invasion, the artist's struggle, satanic worship, the phases of war, etc. Not only do these metaphors contradict eachother, but they leave the movie bereft of character or a coherent story. It's not saying anything new about these subjects, nor is it telling a compelling narrative. It's allegory for allegory's sake.

    • @shiftshaper1
      @shiftshaper1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Completely agree about marketing. Any movie that pulls a bait and switch deserves to bomb. Thought the same thing about It Comes At Night (which also got an extremely low cinemascore). This is the second time this year that studios have conned horror fans (because I guess it's easier to sell) and they really need to stop. I wouldn't have hated this if they just sold it for what it was.

    I love how Korey said “unless you take a time machine back to the seventies”. So true. Audiences could deal with nuance and ambiguity much more during that era. Look at how films like Marathon Man, Three Days of the Condor, All the President’s Men, The French Connection, and The Exorcist were pretty major films that did well with audiences.

  • @AKen_Films
    @AKen_Films 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    After seeing the movie myself, I would say it's not so much if God had a wife of sorts, it's actually that God is married to mother nature! Really a Pun intended on the naming of this film. Jennifer Laurence is mother nature nature in the film while the house is Earth itself, and the people are humanity. (explains why Bardem says they have no where else to go) In this telling of the stories for the bibile humanity is pretty much the villain as well as God allowing this to happen. And who suffers at the hands of humanity flourishing around the world? Apparently mother nature and humanity's constant need of scavenging and consumption. Which is why the ending could be thought of as global warming meets the rapture. Take your pick.
    To take this metaphor even further it might be a sort of trick Aronofsky is playing on the audience, particularly the mainstream audience who won't get it when they watch the film after being disgusted by it. And in turn, their lack of insightfulness in seeing how this is a commentary on the savage nature of man imposed on the Earth shows how i'll prepared and unwilling we as a society are in dealing with the real issues that threaten us all today, i.e. Global Warming. This may explain the marketing and wide release of the film to a degree and Aronofsky just wanting to look back and see how audiences would respond like it was his plan all along lol!
    I don't know, perhaps this is one big rabbit hole that I'm reading too far into. Either way this is still an interesting movie I think people will revisit years to come.

    Am I the only one who found this movie funny? Not in an ironic way either. Granted it's incredibly dark humor, but there were times were I literally laughed out loud with all the absurdism and just how it kept on building and building the chaos. Saw this with my wife in theaters, and we ended up being the only ones in the theater, so it was an interesting experience. By the end, I was floored at the symbolism that was presented as was my wife, but she was too shocked to enjoy it. Darren Aronofsky really did a great job of providing so many layers to this film and I honestly think it's his best.

    There is no thread for general audiences to grab onto, and that's why it failed at the box office. "Get Out" had a not-so subtle subtext about modern-day casual racism, but there was enough there to just enjoy as a straight up horror film.
    "Mother!" does not have that safety net, unfortunately. But, it'll gain a cult following, I'm sure of it.

    Nice analysis, only thing he missed was that Javier Bardem's character name is "Him" and his name is the only one capitalized thus indicating he is God (plus the fact that he survives the explosion without a single burn). I would also argue Jennifer Lawrence is meant to be Mother Nature as the house is clearly meant to symbolize the planet Earth and she has this connection and concern for the house, but that's up for debate.

    I saw this movie the other day. I DIDN'T get the allegory throughout the ENTIRE film. I was assuming it was more trying to be a metaphor for creativity, artistry and fandom and I actually really liked it when the true meaning was sort of enigmatic to me. And then my girlfriend looked up Aronofsky's explanation and I actually like the movie less now that it was laid out for me... I don't HATE the film. But I think the simple act of defining the symbolism made it less impactful. At least that's how it hit me. I still think its good. Just a bit of a mess. A very pretty mess.

    The yellow stuff I think was from the yellow wallpaper another story though...only story I know with a pregnant lady slowly losing her mind. Now the blood I just thought that was the house bleeding from all the bad stuff going on.

    Damn Korey Jennifer Lawrence is mother nature and the house is mother earth. That is very important spoiler.

    Ugh. Really? I've heard people say that they walked out at the end because of how distasteful it was and some responded by saying the scene is so symbolic and metaphorical that it shouldn't offend people. Yeah, because no one could possibly react to what happens at the end of this film for the sake of a tortured overwrought metaphor with distaste. Art can still offend. Clearly that was Aronofsky's intent with a scene like that, but you can't blame people if such a distasteful act could disgust people.

    Fantastic. However to me the conflict between Jennifer Lawrence and her husband was maybe the conflict that God feels when He looks at humanity. He loves us but it kills Him to see how we have really messed up.

    This actually makes me want to see the movie more now. I know, I spoiled it watching this, but it makes me feel better to watch it now. But I still have to contend with what Martin pointed out that was annoying (Lawrence's goat screams).

    I heard that Jennifer's character was suppose to be Mother Nature, or the Earth itself, and to heal herself she was drinking sunlight and water (the building blocks of life)

    I loved the movie and I'm not a hipster. Yes the studio took a gamble on something like this but there are THOUSANDS OF MOVIES WE CAN ALL GET A LONG WITH AND LOVE but when a movie that is outside the box decides it wants to play to a certain crowd no put it away I don't get that logic. So it didn't make 20 million dollars SO WHAT ? Korey you love the STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR THOSE WHO HATE IT. If you hated this movie sorry but there are plenty of movies to cater to what you need move on.

    I've actually listened to a lot of reviews for this and they pretty much all got; it same biblical allegories and everything, but some still didn't like it. A lot actually said that it wasn't subtle at all in that regard. They said the metaphors were actually layered. It can bee seen from the biblical aspect, from how we as humans treat the earth, fame and idol worship

    Thanks for explaining this in a practical manner for people who didn't get it. The only thing I still don't get is the orange shit "Mother" drinks. Is that suppose to represent sunlight? The sun being male and representing god?

  • @ChaddMinchew

    I really enjoyed the movie but was unsettled by it to. It stirred many emotions of love, hate and confusion. I love the telling of biblical references from a different perspective because if there is an all powerful being or god that exists, then I think that being can not be confined to one narrative or understanding. How can a lower being completely understand how a higher being relates to all that exists? I continue to ponder the vision of the movie itself and I like a movie that makes me question and search for it's complete meaning and what it's communicating. I will be rewatching and purchasing this movie for sure but I agreed it is not for everyone. The yellow powder and room/passageway next to the furnace, I haven't completely put together in my mind of their meaning or purpose but maybe it's not meant to be completely understood or is up for interpretation.

    Also, who else saw the water pipe burst in the kitchen, as the "Great Flood"? It DID wash away, the 1st batch of 'ignant/infant', human beings. But even the "Original Uncensored Movie Poster", speaks Volumes! Nevermind that it was the OIL/FUEL, that serves as a necessary Energy(a source of both Construction, & also Destruction via, Borderline. "Exploding House")! 🤔,🧐,😏

    I saw it opening night. It was obvious, and grotesque for the sake of being grotesque at times. That said, I wasn't mad at it being an obvious creation allegory until it was clear they weren't going to make it compelling enough for me to sit there another hour and fifty minutes. It was a worthy attempt, but I would say swing and a miss.

    Business wise, that's unfortunate. Artistically, I thought the movie was excellent - will likely go see it again in the theatre. It's right up there with Baby Driver as my favourite of the year so far. I was following it just as easily as you Korey - I just didn't see the busted sink as being the flood - Bardem's character would of had to bust the sink himself (as God) or deliberately flood the house for me to make that connection. I enjoyed the parallels, however I did winced a little when Bardem told Lawrence's character she had to forgive the people for killing and eating their baby, at that point it became painfully obvious what everything represented, and it felt really unnatural for him to react that way, so suddenly. I also thought the movie should've ended when the house exploded, and thought it ran a couple scenes too long. Other than that, I have nothing to complain about. The third act was just the right amount of crazy. I also perceived it as an allegory of a failed relationship. Bardem's character is so caught up in work and is consumed by his own ego and impressing the masses, while his wife, who has been so supportive grows more and more frustrated, until she ends the relationship, leaving him to pick up the pieces and start over - the different actress at the end could represent someone new.

    Ok i'm confused. I do need to see it for myself but every review is blaming the trailers for misleading the public by selling it as a horror/thriller movie but every review i've watched or read so far makes the movie sound exactly like a horror/thriller in their description of it.
    It has a baby torn to pieces and then eaten, that sure sounds like a horror film to me.
    I mean not even Romero's Day of the Dead, Reanimator or Green Inferno had a baby murdered then eaten lol.
    So what is it then, a mystery?
    Hey is your NY show sold out I would love to attend.
    Anyone in your crew fans of Cannibal Campout I was one of the creators and played the monster with the helmet please tell me one of you crazy cats watched it, it's punishment having to sit thru it lol.
    Oh man please do a show on it that would be so awesome!

      Decorum Nation it’s not a mystery. It’s a tale of how corruption and mob rule can create chaos to the point where the only solution is extermination. And as life begins once more with a fresh start, if we haven’t learned the lessons of the past, we’ll repeat those same mistakes that lead to destruction and the cycle continues once again. It has other allusions as well. I thought of the mass extinction of the great beasts, yet life persisted and evolved to where we are now, and what we’ve done is create hostility, division and discord where it would be much easier to function as a society where we cooperate and help each other survive. But human nature creates tribalism that leads to division that leads to misunderstands, hate, vengeance, murder, genocide, war, waste, infestation, and ultimately, destruction.

    Yeah, the big mistake was misleading marketing. People don't like to be fooled, they dont like bait & switch, they don't like expecting something they don't get, they don't like being confused, etc. So when they came out of that theatre after watching such a disturbing movie that made no sense to them, & were asked to rate the movie, it's no wonder so many people gave the film an F score! They didn't even have time to think about it, or to read or watch or listen to explanations of it. It was their reaction to a film that was 2 hours of high anxiety & confusion. Even if that was the intent because we were supposed to be experiencing this story from the perspective of Mother Nature (J. Lawrence) who was also experiencing high anxiety & confusion, audiences didn't understand what was going on.

    I'm so surprised that I had the EXACT same interpretation, with a few exceptions. 1: the yellow tonic she drinks is tolerance. When she has faith in humans she throws it away. And because she throws away her tolerance, she breaks out into those yelling fits that never happened when she was drinking the yellow tonic. The house is the physical world and Jennifer Lawrence is the human representation of earth. You could also interpret Bardem as a prophet and Lawrence as god. With the prophet remaining unscathed after the apocalypse only for another god to come along in the history of the world. It could be an allegory of the power of false prophets. The evidence being when Lawrence told Bardem, "you never loved me, you loved the love I gave you"
