    Also for the people interested: Even though it doesn't have a microphone input jack, you can always use external audio tools, such as the Zoom H1, to record Audio from the mount, clip on or even a boom pole. The setting for video can be controlled via normal photo settings, by just clicking the lock button to keep the settings.

    You mention one of the cons of this camera is that you cannot use manual focus while in the video feature; but shots 0:16-0:17, 0:50-0:53, and 1:03-1:06 it looks like you're playing with the focus very beautifully. What feature were you using to shift the focus from the foreground to the background like that, and vice versa? Would love to know!

  • @jowen034
    @jowen034 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bought this camera a couple of weeks ago, at first I was dissapointed with the video quality, but the trick is you have to manually focus the lens. The auto-focus motor is very loud, especially to a mic hard mounted to the camera. The auto-focus function is really quite annoying. It may just be user error, but manually focusing is easy enough, especially on that giant 3" screen.

    I noticed the rolling shutter con right away, even with the good shots at the beginning, like the pivoting around the subject shot @ 0:30 I noticed the trees in the background were losing detail and bending somewhat. You was going slow enough to not make it noticeable and working within the limitations of the camera.
    Good camera, but I would save for a Canon 5D Mark III with the MagicLantern firmware upgrade that allows you to shoot in RAW if you want to do cinematic video.
    I was just looking because I have to use a D3100 to shoot a wedding with. Rolling shutter wouldn't have been much of an issue to deal with but it is good to know. Nice to see I can get a pretty great cinematic effect with this camera.

    • @WWVND
      @WWVND 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      artemis fowl Fuck off. You obviously don't know what the hell you are talking about if you think a heavy rolling shutter effect is a MINOR issue.
      The D3100 is NOT a "damn good camera". It is for novice enthusiasts. It's a borderline "prosumer" camera. It's for the "serious consumer" that want's an upgrade over their $50 camera... not a camera for the "serious filmmaker". The only way you can say the D3100 is a "DAMN good camera", is if you also include "for the PRICE" in the same sentence. It's a damn good camera for the price, for someone that isn't looking to use it for professional looking video.
      Do you even know what rolling shutter is? Have you ever had to try fixing it in post-production? It's a serious pain in the ass. You can downplay the effect in Premiere or Final Cut, but it's still there and still noticeable to the trained eye.
      This is something people need to know who are looking to buy a camera to achieve "cinematic video". For the same price, I would rather buy the Lumix CM1 smartphone camera with the Leica lens to do video with before I would buy the cheap professional-wannabe D3100.

    • @WWVND
      @WWVND 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are plenty of real life situations when the jello effect(rolling shutter) suddenly becomes a problem, a fast train or car passing will have leaning windows and elliptical wheels, or watching a chase scene with moving camera and subjects will make you dizzy. Until we get global shutters, the jello effect is CMOS sensor’s biggest Achilles Heel.
      There you have it, rolling shutter is the number 1 biggest problem for DSLR cameras with their CMOS sensors. The D3100 has a very bad rolling shutter issue. If you are not worried about, great. Buy the camera. Hell buy 2 used ones they are so cheap. But people should know about it's limitations and it's issues before buying.
      This video here is all well and good, but it's video of nothing. The only moving subject is the cameraman and he was super careful not to trigger too much of the rolling shutter jello effect. Someone buying the camera unaware of this effect is going to be in the surprise of their lives when they get their handheld video of their son's soccer game on to their computers and see it on a bigger screen.
      Because it will look like it was shot by a man with Tourette's Syndrome while having a seizure. He will see in Premiere/Final Cut. That the image looks good and steady when he is being perfectly still, then in the very next frame, things get all bent of shape the moment he starts to move the camera to follow the action.

    • @WWVND
      @WWVND 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any camera with a pop-up flash is NOT a serious camera. The D3100 is an entry level camera, for enthusiasts, nothing more. Period.

    • @ryanchen5764
      @ryanchen5764 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eric East This is true. When I try filming with it, I always see the "jello effect," which is REALLY irritating.

    Hi, would i be able to ask, when you exported this, what kind of settings did you use? I find i'll use my Canon to record a high quality film and then i'll export it and can never get the settings right so it renders the movie and ruins the quality. I'm buying this camera soon though, thanks for the video, absolutely love it.

  • @johnblaster
    @johnblaster 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Madaboutponies Yes, get this camera. The rolling shutter is a non-issue unless you're going for a Cinéma vérité look. You can also run a deshaker on the footage to correct all of that, as the person who posted the video did. If you look carefully, especially during the first clip, you will see some blurry, warping edges and that is his stabilization software attempting to fill those in. He should have cropped the edges. Get the d5000, you will not be disappointed.

If you will be primarily making films then I would go with Canon because you can plug external mic in Canon but not in Nikon. Then again you can get external sound system at added cost of course. I think these two are very much the same as for the picture quality and movie making.

    Great video! I'm cant decide if I want to get a Canon t3i or a Nikon d3100... So far it seems like the Nikon takes MUCH BETTER video....
