In early Chinese culture, it is believed that strong winds carry epidemics so they hung up wind chimes so there would not be an epidemic.
That is exactly what the PS1 does, it plays the sound of wind chimes to ward off negative energy in hopes that the disc would eventually be read.

Is a combination of a sound of BIOS_STARTUP_8 and BIOS_STARTUP_9, they extended the sound to a loooong sound. Then, added to the ps1.
They didn’t purposely make fearful harmony.

Why fearful harmony happens:
The PS tries to read data, but can't find it. Because it is trying again and again it lags the PS a lot. The sound is the PS intro but slowed way down because of the lag.

I'm pretty sure what happens, at least on Fearful Harmony, is that the PS can't identify the disc but tries to read it anyway. This takes up a bunch of resources, meaning the PS logo plays through but at an extremely slow speed due to lag. The result is the sound.
EDIT: Apparently this guess I made was mostly right. Neat.

Yeah, it is basically a MIDI playing but the notes keep getting played over and over because the PS1 is lagging so bad. The notes themselves seem to play at the correct speed.

FluxGigawatt Reading discs uses up no resource whatsoever except drive calls which are worth nothing. Fearful harmony is either the result of a corrupted/modified BIOS or a homebrew disc on a modded PS1 which somehow employes code hijacking which in turn edits the BIOS RAM data anyway.

the reason you can't easily get the force restart error is because you have a modchipped system. non-modified systems will always get the INSERT DISC background

BIOS basically manages boot up of the console. Stands for Basic I/O (Input/Output) System, every single console or device that get its BIOS corrputed/bricked literally has no hope, not only the PS1.

1. Personified Fear happens also when you insert PS2 CD-ROM based game and wait about 2-3 minutes on SONY logo screen. I've tested it many times on many consoles.
2. Insert Disc/Force Restart is not a "rare" screen. It's just the same screen like "Insert PlayStation format DISC", but this version occurs on PAL models from 1002, to 5552. US and JP consoles have only "blue BIOS" from 1000/1001 to 9000/9001, but EU consoles are a little bit different. 1002, 5502 and 5552 models have "old style" tiled background BIOS, which has this "rare" error screen with black disc and PSX console pictures. In Europe only 7002, 7502, 9002 models have the "blue BIOS" same as in JP/US models with "Insert PlayStation Format DISC" error screen.

Personified fear is the scariest error ive ever heard of/seen. The unease you feel after that REALLY hard noise is just disturbing. After that noise, You only see a black screen. Nothing. I always turn down my volume incase i get scared. So yeah.

@Camel King Clarith That's Personified Fear, Fearful Harmony is the "pring" sound that when it starts up normally is along with those 2 sounds.
The thing is, the visuals are different every time, so sometimes you can get a bunch of graphics vomit, the PlayStation diamond thing but cut in half or you could even get the visuals to be a “Forbidden Image”

Am I the only one who gets on edge, sick to my stomach, and paranoid, whenever I hear fearful harmony? This shit used to play a lot at 2:00 AM because my old PS1 had an error where it would turn itself on, and I had an unreadable disc, the open latch was hard to get, and I was too scared to unplug it...
I was like 4, when it happened. It still creeps me out just as much as it did back then.
I never heard of a PS1 turning itself on before. Thats instresting
The power button was sticky and would short because as a kid, I spilled my juice box in it. That's the only reason I can think of for it doing that.

ive always wonder what specifically makes fearful harmony and personified fear happen, like what specifically is it about the situation that causes it

consoles weren’t that powerful in 1998 so if you put a really bad conditioned disk the ps1 would actually keep reading it.
trying to read the disk does some damage to the BIOS/system, which ends up playing parts of the ps1 startup until it finishes.
after it finishes, the only option you have is to click reset.
obv they did fix this in 2002 (ps2 era) as tech was more advanced

I will share my theory why Fearful Harmony looks glitchy:
Since you get Fearful Harmony by putting in an unauthorised/DVD/unknown format disc, the PS1’s fairly weak CD reader tries to read the info off the disc. Since it doesn’t have the curly lines, the console requests data to fill the empty disc in. Instead, you get an integer overflow. The eerie noises come from the console ripping ad much data as possible to get something working. The glitchy look is coming from the binary code on the disc loading in to the memory, but since it’s not the right format, it can’t run. To remedy this, the console spews out junk data from the disc (again) in attempts to get something working.

The PS1 then gets corrupted by the invalid CD-ROM data and ends up glitching the Playstation audio driver, thus making glitched corrupted Harmony from the startup but looping it due to a error, and the console still wants the data so it continues to read the disc.
So, Sony did not do that?
I never had a PS1 so I cannot confirm, I don't do disassembly of consoles anyway so I cannot tell exactly what happens during the personified fear error.

Ah, that’s why it sounds so ethereal. When the files got corrupted, it probably couldn’t just be deleted, so it makes sense with the over lapping and repeating sounds.
Fearful harmony is the same sound at different pitches and speeds (I think. Correct me if I'm wrong)
AFAIK, that's the glissando that plays when you have inserted a regular playstation 1 disc, but slowed down

It almost looks like the fearful harmony was supposed to be some sort of credits screen, but it ended up being some kind of corrupted hunk of junk that was forgotten to be removed from code.
Never thought I would see a video that teaches you how to willingly brake your stuff....I'm impressed
