    This video is exactly why I sold my boat on the Broads. Always makes me laugh watching people turn the wheel to the opposite lock when reversing on a shaft driven boat 🤣

      I agree John. I've been thinking of getting another boat on the broads but watching Ludham bridge genuinely puts me off. Another good film. Keep them coming. I do enjoy watching the broads.

      I don’t have a boat myself so have no knowledge of steering one. There are some very skilled helmsmen out on the water though.
      When I’m filming the boats at Ludham Bridge, there’s a good chance they only started their holiday around 2 hours earlier. It can be a bit chaotic at times but it’s not like this all season. ⛵️🛥📸 😅 thank you for watching.

    We lived on our boat on the Broads for 10 years and sold it to move into the Cambridgeshire Fens simply because of constantly being rammed by hirers, it was like living on the M25. We continued living on a 60ft narrow boat and had no issues with being rammed in the Fens

    This is my worst nightmare with regards to the Norfolk Broads. Fair play to you for capturing the chaos on so many occasions. Although it makes for entertaining viewing, it is a situation that immediately becomes unacceptable for other boat users. This in all fairness should not be happening and it demonstrates just how out of control the Norfolk Broads has become. Personally, I believe that if the hire boat companies that are heavily prevalent in this footage believe it is acceptable? then they are totally wrong and should be up at Ludham dealing with it so other people do not have to. Keep up the good work!

      But then again, the biggest hire yard is above Ludham Bridge. Their change over days are every day except Sundays and Wednesdays. Add to that, the boats/sailing boats visiting above Ludham, around Barton Broad etc, makes for a lot of traffic on the Ant. The Ant is one of the nicest stretches on the Broads, and is also one of the narrowest with many bends too. The biggest problem, as always, is speed. If, for various unfortunate reasons, there is a collision, if the boat is going too fast, it's a crash. If the boat is going slow, it's a bump.

    • @NewnameSameme
      @NewnameSameme  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I filmed there today. It was at times, absolute chaos. That video will be ready on Wednesday.

  • @oceancaptainbob
    @oceancaptainbob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Too much speed!!!. Also, some boats didn't seem to know which way to face. The boat at 5min 28secs was actually too long to try to turn at that point. There was some wind which didn't help. I know from my own experience that very low speed also makes steering difficult. Best to wait for the traffic jam to clear.

    I'm actually typing this at ludham bridge right now in the sunshine.
    This is our first time here and hiring a boat (Richardson Gold Gem for a week)
    We deliberately chose this week as its not school holidays and it's really quiet. Was easy to park.
    We have been from Stalham to Beccles.
    The southern broads are a lot quieter!
    Ours is not the easiest to park haha (next time Bow thrusters please) but I've not hit anyone even when going stern on.
    But I've seen some right idiots on the water...zigzagging everywhere.
    But to anyone new..try it. Really relaxing holiday

      Most of the "instruction" as about keeping the hirer safe, there's very little about taking care to avoid third party incidents or respecting other river users. I'm guessing this is prioritised so that the hire companies can claim due diligence when a hirer is injured or killed and they have to defend against litigation. There is nothing about why you should be moving slowly, what "slow" looks like, not creating a massive wake when passing moored or small boats, etc. Because it's all about the FUN... until it's not. This isn't helped by insurance waivers, which are basically a licence to do whatever you like as it will be covered by insurance. As long as the cost of damage doesn't exceed the £50k excess the hire companies don't even bother making claims. Where is the safety incentive?

  • @katej3z715
    @katej3z715 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The hire boats have got bigger and bigger and many of them are far from ideal. The long low boats go under every bridge and have few steps. The luxury cruiser type spin on a central axis. They are tricky for amateurs without being so very big. The lady riding the stern,- so very incredibly dangerous whilst boat under power. It pains me to say it but they should put a upper limit on the number of boats leased per week.

    • @NewnameSameme

      I think it’s simply because more boats are hired out each week due to the staycations.

    @astidog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    chaos? heck yes that all the fun :) I am sure I would do no better if I was on the water. We need to remember that about 95% of the time a boat hitting a boat is nothing like a car hitting a parked car, boats rebound, cars dont, carm mat end up dented, it's rare for structual damage to a boat (nothing a bit of paint cant solve!) Boatyards are used to it i'm sure and i bet the majority of the boats arent even insured for their own contact damage as the boatyards can fix almost everything themselves cheaper!

    • @NewnameSameme
      @NewnameSameme  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, I don’t own a boat , so I don’t feel I can ever judge others sailing abilities. I wouldn’t have a clue .
      Boatyards are amazing. I’ve seen a boat stuck under Potter Heigham bridge in the morning with damage to the roof …….. it’s been out on hire again later that day, fully repaired. 👏🏻👏🏻

      When you have spent in excess of 100k on a vintage boat I would like to keep it in one piece just because you scrapped a bit of varnish doesn’t mean it’s ok it takes a lot of hard work to keep a boat looking nice just because it’s a hire boat doesn’t mean you can use it as a battering ram.

    • @Malco1805
      @Malco1805 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don’t assume that accidents between boats don’t cause much damage. My boat isn’t painted and repairs to gel coat could necessitate it being lifted for repair. This could take weeks and deny me the opportunity using something that I have invested a lot of money into. It’s easy to be an armchair captain. But these boats are very hard to handle with only a couple of hours instruction. Being a boat user in Poole, I’ve seen very experienced skippers getting it wrong now and then when wind or tide catches someone unaware, and these are people who go boating on a regular basis. We can laugh at these people, but remember that some may have only been at the helm for a couple of hours and are in a very tight and busy area.

    I passed through Ludham Bridge twice last week, on Monday and again on Wednesday. There was no chaos and no sign of idiocy. There’s only one reason that these videos are filmed on a Sunday and that it’s the only day of the week when so many craft are there on the same day. Perhaps we could see a video made on a Tuesday afternoon. I’ll guarantee it would make boring viewing.
