Norfolk Broads Boating: A very near miss at Ludham Bridge, 24 October, 2020

  • With the holiday season on the Norfolk Broads slowly coming to an end, its a dull day at Ludham Bridge, and there's a strong breeze blowing, too.
    But there are still boats on the move, and it is still easy to get into difficult situations aboard one of the very popular, but very large cruisers . . .

    It was just as bad at Brundall, in my youth. Saturday morning was when all the hire boats changed crews. If they asked, they got a quick 30 minute tutorage, but very few did this. The result, absolute carnage.

    Said it before, say it again, Ludham never disappoints. And that was one helluva near miss.

      Wasn't it just. Glad we weren't aboard that time, Andrew, although I doubt we'd have got into that position.

    I also film here, it seems to be the place for bumps and mishaps. Another great video . I even saw a boat sail away leaving a crew member on the quay!! 10 minutes later they returned for her 😱🛥🤷‍♀️

      @@HomemadeTV some just don’t care and that’s so sad. Damaging other people’s property should not be allowed in any way shape or form.
      No wonder private owners get so cross.

    Hope to return to the Broads next year. Last time we went boating there was 1986! The youngsters among our party have never been boating. Using your videos as a pre-cruise education. Many thanks. The River Ant is my favourite. ⚓

    Splice the mainbrace, hoist the yard arm and swab the decks and you won't go far wrong.

    No excuse for that Monaco hitting other boats. We had Monaco 1 a couple of weeks ago and with Bow and Stern thrusters you can place the boat anywhere.
    A lot of driving too fast in this video. When helming 'slow is pro'. We all make mistakes but the slower you are travelling the less danger of injuries or damage

    • @HomemadeTV
      @HomemadeTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very true. Thrusters really take away all the possible excuses for hitting anything at all, but going slow certainly is essential. I've had sailing yachts (with a lot of windage) and motor boats all my life, none have had thrusters, and have never had an bump . . . maybe tomorrow! 😃

    Boating on the Broads is a contact sport. It gives the workers in the boatyards something to do in the winter.

    Boat was giving way, can't help meeting someone head on on narrow stretches . It happens . Important thing he wasn't moving. ... I find mooring however easier coming in parallel myself . But if you have a big enough crew you can afford to plough full throttle bow first to the quay 😆😆I guess , just glad that wasn't me moored up next to it 😬

  • @darrenjohnson2836
    @darrenjohnson2836 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Both at fault:
    - Why did Fair Emperor just sit there, should of reversed or even straightened up using bow thrusters ?
    - Monaco 3 was going too fast and nobody sounded horn.
    - Monaco 3 could of also used Bow and stern thrusters to stop back end hitting both boats.
    In general we can use this as an example of what not to do at Ludham Bridge.

    I wonder if these people would treat their own boats the same. If they had one, of course.

    • @HomemadeTV
      @HomemadeTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol! The thing is that they're just hire boats, from the holiday-makers viewpoint, and many first-time hirers don't have the vaguest idea of how to handle them. The yards don't mind the odd bump, and if there's damage, there's insurance. But many frequent boaters develop some good skills, and it can be a pleasure to watch them.

      @@HomemadeTV I am a tourist boat-hirer and really, the companies only give a 20 minute lesson for people who have never tried rto handle a boat in their lives. Fortunately I have never had an accident and am now relatively competent but you have to remember that the average holidaymaker is both inexperienced and often lacking in common sense.

    Some people shouldn't be let anywhere near a boat.
    Almost five years ago now we were moored up at Ludham Bridge, when a moron reversed at high speed across the river and hit us then headed up the river towards Stalham.
    About an hour later this idiot came back to hit the boat moored behind me then bounce off it and hit me yet again, neither time did he stop and apologise and check for damage to any of the boats he hit.
    By then I'd managed to grab my camera and managed to video the idiot trying to get under Ludham Bridge, he hit that too, he'd got no idea how to handle a boat and shouldn't be allowed near anything bigger than a row boat for the rest of his life.
    My video of him hitting the bridge can be found here th-cam.com/video/mx8mqs8ay0U/w-d-xo.html.
    Every time we've stopped at Ludham Bridge we see at least on collision or near miss, Ludham Bridge seems to attract people who can't handle boats.
