I am impressed with the captain's skills. He didnt hit the concrete. I don't have much experience with motor boats, but i was a white water raft guide for over a decade. When fighting the current like that, the boat will get away from you real quick. Make one minor overcorrection and the boat will make a hard turn. For him to stall out and maintain his ferry angel is impressive. And he's doing it with his feet!
Perhaps I will be the only one not impressed, a lot of time, fuel and money was burnt going nowhere, had the vessel not been overloaded (Cpt's responsible) then maybe he would have made it through in one try, THEN I would be impressed.
Is overloading the barge really worth the wear and tear repair costs of the engine and boat? I would be willing to bet that they would make roughly the same amount if you compared price per delivery versus downtime spent repairing the engine and replacing parts. In fact I would also bet that the time spent broke down and doing these repairs would amount to at least one extra load each year... Maybe more.
Hi, thank you for watching the video, the overloaded cargo barge brings a lot of profit, although it will wear out the engine, but the cost of repairing the engine is not as much as the profit that the barge has carried.

Notice the one that went through easily was not wildly steering left and right. When you steer the boat you push your thrust sideways instead of forward. When travelling long distances novices will over steer the boat trying to maintain a strict course, this slows you down and can add hours to your trip. If you just give the boat some time to react you save much fuel and time.

One thing that "might" have helped was to cover over the bow anchor chain ports which would of helped reduce about a ton or more of water being carried across the bow causing the bow to dig it that little bit more. Two pieces of plywood, plus two 2x4's to put across the back of the anchor port holes and one long bolt or threaded rod and you could block off most of the water flowing in, plus pump out any water in the bow. Might work? Might not!
Not much compared the the huge wetted area and the many tons of sand. The issue they have is that they can't go fast enough to exceed the water current through the gate. These boats draw something like 10 feet, so a little bit of water on the bow is trivial. What they really need is another 100hp.
There is barely any math involved in knowing whether your barge can get through. If the current is flowing faster than the fastest speed of the barge you will not make it because the fastest speed indicates the point where the engine is producing the most kinetic energy.
