We've always just stuck a nail in the ground directly touching the tomato stem. Cut worms won't eat it then, can't wrap around it. Leave the nail about half in half out of the ground. Cut worms like to wrap around at ground level and this stops them. Six generations of gardening you just take things for granted that everyone must know.

I'm so glad you didn't give up on the tomatoes. I was growing all kinds for market. Got the seeds from Baker Creek. You can put the transplants out bigger than that. Throw the seeds in a pot or box and plant them out when they get four or more leaves. Same thing with peppers. And plant them deep. The stems will put out roots and better support it as it grows. You can do it David. And you should seriously consider doing a music compilation of your songs.

Tip here! When I want to clear ground for a future plantation, I sow wheat in the end of summer, then during endish of winter the wheat has long since grown all lush and beautiful and the other invasive plants haven't been able to stick their heads out because of the wheat taking over.
Now all I have to do is pull the wheat out like pulling hair, it's super easy because you have lots of grip and their roots are very weak. Now you have a nice clean patch of ground to plant what you want :)
+ it's great to loosen up a hard ground too, their tiny roots make little tunnels through the soil, and if you want to enrich the soil just clip it down and leave it to decay on the spot.
++ And it protects the soil during winter like a nice thick coat ;)

    • @archenema6792

Rapeseed works well, too, because if you plant it in Sept/Oct, it doesn't have time to seed, and still stays kind of alive through the winter, and can be easily yanked or turned in the spring.

I did the egg trial last year. Broke an egg in one pot. Put in 4 inch transplant. Same size pot, same type/size transplant...no egg. The pot with the egg smelled bad. Like BAD. But egg tomato grew twice as big. I eventually had a creature do some digging in stinky pot but it was never a problem in the garden where I used the up-potted larger transplants and planted them and the egg much deeper.
Big win for the egg tomatoes with no chemicals required.

Try putting a PVC collar around each plant or even the toilet roll cardboard. It keeps them away. But you need a lot and you only have to put it around once. Push it down into the ground.

I'm not a big slash-and-burn kind of guy. I like permaculture, but in your case you are going to dig up all the routes put them in a pile somewhere else, and then put the ashes back where you working. Seems like you would be better burning them in place along with all the small Vine cuttings so you can stop the crazy growth. In your case, I think it would be a wise permi culture application

To fix the holes in your watering can, use sandpaper to roughen the area around the hole, then apply CA glue and sprinkle baking soda over it. Add another layer if necessary. It is waterproof. Works for gasoline tanks too. Good luck.

Do you ever use suckers to clone tomatoes? I try to keep my crop going by cloning and planting every couple of weeks. When I was in South Carolina, I just stuck the suckers into the ground and they rooted like mad, but here in FL, I have to root them before planting. Very aggravating.
Those are such tiny transplants! I'd be tempted to grow those out a little before I planted them. Weird that the plants just die here and there. It's almost like something underground is eating the roots off or something. Do you have moles or voles there?

Many people let their plants get just a little bigger and plant them inside a paper tube. (a toilet paper roll is great). The paper tube protects the plant as the cutworm can't get access to the tomato plant. The tube breaks down as the season goes on. Diatomaceous earth is another. Just a few thoughts!
