- What's the best garden fertilizer? In our beds, in awful soil, this one performed the best!
It's almost the end of 2020! Today we plant some seeds we sprouted in the fridge, take a tour through the gardens, and wrap up the 12-bed garden amendment experiment for this year. I also share my plans for the 2021 gardens and how I hope to use the data we gathered from our fall garden to grow GREAT BIG HUGE TURNIPS!
Right now we are harvesting daikons and turnips and watching the winter cover crops grow.

Again, your 12 bed trial was good...unlike many contrived, half-wit trials by garden TH-camrs. I don't expect a rigorous scientfic approach, but some don't even try.
Its so great to have you back. I laughed out loud at 'let me have my moment.' I have these myself, and they're fun. There is so much joy in plants, if you're into that sort of thing.

I might be building up a stash of ziploc bags with apple and pear seeds in an attempt to grow them. There are like 5 ziploc bags in our cripser drawer and my family is like why are you doing this

Soil in south georgia and south alabama was considered pine barren in the old days. My grandfather farmed in Albany GA. He would plant peanuts to amend the soil and he said it really helped...

My wifes family farmed in Haleburg, ALA. Cotton and peanuts in rotation. Peanuts are big there.The farmers used the shells to bed cattle.

Hey David pretty great video. I make biochar every . I have lot of Fallen branches from trees and fire wood scraps did Apollo up like a bonfire. Then I'm ready. I go to my local Deer Processor and collect about a hundred pounds of deer bones. When I get my bonfire going I laid the deer bones into the pile and burn them. I scooped out the Embers from the bottom of the pile after it's burned down and put them in a barrel of water and spray them down to quench them. I have had great success with this method of making biochar and bio bone char. I supercharged them and they work great in my Gardens. Good luck buddy Happy New Year

Too many videos out there making complicated Contraptions to make simple biochar and bio bones. It's BS. A big pile of wood, a match, about a hundred pounds of deer bones free of charge add a deer processor. Some good music, a comfortable chair and some kind of container to fill up with water to quench The Embers. This is my fourth year to do it and I look forward to it because I know what great things that does for my soil and my plants and my life

Looking good despite the poor conditions David! I also love turnips and they're greens. Daikons stewed, and especially pickled. And as for that Daipro at the end, perhaps a more fitting name would be a DaiKONG! ;)
All but sold a kidney to get a couple of the American Pawpaw here in Australia (: Looking forward to getting fruit one day. My banana's are alive but not productive as yet, but my Babaco tree is doing very well with fruit just starting to go ripe. Push The Zone! Thanks for all your ideas and enthusiasm.
I have various fruits in various stage of rot lying around the kitchen. Not a seed escapes my house without being saved...
Soaking, sometimes over night, really helps to get the sand off. Looking good!

This is experiment has been eye opening. In Steve Solomon's new book He said that for the backyard gardener (which I am) the Down-To-Earth mix is very close to his own mix. So along with my earthworms I'm going to try it because I can't go all over trying to locate all those amendments. Happy to see the worm castings are doing well. I love my worms. 😉
The Down-to-earth Vegetable Garden 4-4-4? Looks like a 5 lb bag is enough for 100 sq ft, at $15 per bag.... Says calcium to magnesium ratio is 6:1.

The success of the lasagna bed points to the importance of organic matter in the soil. Cool to see the test beds in action.

Yes! Those tree starting pots are awesome and so affordable. Will definitely order some soon for starting tree seedlings. That sticky sand is why I grew up hating greens grown locally. My stomach would reject them the next morning, every single time I ate them. Imagine, if you will, beginning your Saturday morning by sitting up in bed; barfing up a pile of collards or turnips and then heading off to watch cartoons. I'm not sure why we always ate greens on Friday night. Despite that part of my childhood, I still managed to try greens again in my adult years and enjoy them to this day, when washed and cooked properly.

The big dicon radish is super good Fermented.. mine are doing good too.. but the greens go to the chickens who need green food in winter. Glad your well ..
I put pluot seeds in the refrigerator but I think my soil was too wet 'cause they're not doing anything but I do have three date palmes growing I just threw the seeds in the dirt in a pot they each have one real leaf now, BoyDavid I'm really impressed with your garden thank you for the update

Been eyeing those tree-planting starter things, but so far my cheapitude has won out and using yogurt cups with drainage holes drilled into bottom. You have inspired me to plant more varied fruit seeds. Have some satsumas sprouted from seeds waiting for spring. And a batch of black locusts. Need to stratify a bunch of chestnuts I got at local farmers market too. It is very satisfying seeing them sprout.
Have an 18" mango inside in a big pot too, but it's looking sad at the moment. Suspect it wants more light.
Need to get some mulberries going too!

Great job David. Hope your taste returns soon. Have you heard of tilling in your Daikon radishes. Farmeres in the south have gotten Amazing results. It makes for a super productive spring . Can you do a experimental patch . Your Daikons look damn Awesome
Fantastic. also, nice turnips. I prefer rutabagas--the turnip with a college education (as my Grandpa called them...lol).
I had success making biochar by building a char burner like this:
Take a 55 gal. drum. Cut in an access door and a few vents around the lower base. Cut a wide door at the top is next.
To this add a 30 gal metal drum to the inside.
A brick or two under the 30 gal, me thinks will help air flow.
To run your "burner":
Load the wood or organic matter, you wish to char, into the 30 gal drum, while it is setting inside the 55 gal drum.
Now load the wood or other fuel into the access door in the side of the 55 gal drum.
Start a fire in the 55 gal drum. Close the top of the 55 gal drum. Let'er burn.
Basically you have made a stove, with the 30 gal drum becoming an oven in the inside.
Charcoal = baked wood or like organic matter

Worm compost pile looks really good! Did better than 10-10-10, Dave fermentation mix alone. So worm was 4th place.

When i was a kid the neighborhood raked leaves in the fall. One guy close by had a bank and ditch, he wanted filled in. Everybody dumped their stuff there. The soil from this rotting stuff was incredible. When we went fishing we would always dig worms there .They were numerous and huge. I used a similar thing for my mothers flower beds. Raked the leaves into them and then cover with a pickup load of pine bark mulch. By the next summer, black soil. It takes a while to create the organic part of soil. The leaves were from all types of trees. Cover crops without some fertilizer, just wont grow well. Contractors here pay to illegally dig the black muck out of swamps. Its good stuff. they mix it with? Sand / and sell it to people as topsoil ,loam. For big $$. I tried Hugel beds and the results were good, soil, not perfect but good in about one year. I put turned over sod on top and covered it with black plastic to kill weeds. Love your content.
Sand pears the make the best Pear relish! They are hard to find. I'm trying to grow some from seed now!
Just learned you can use old tp and paper towel rolls as planters. You can direct plant them.
I used tubes one year and I had some that came unglued almost as soon as I added soil. I stuck some tape around them to keep them from unwinding.. Some folks make tubes from newspaper rolled and folded with no tape or glue but I couldn't get the knack of making them. Now I mainly use soil blocks.

Hey, David. I'm in zone 5/6. I put elderberry seeds in a baggie with wet paper towel in my freezer 2 years ago and forgot them. Do you think they might have survived and will grow? I'm gonna go ahead and plant them this spring, but I would hate to waste my time on them. Thanks.

Dang, FYI my friend had covid back in March and still doesn’t have his taste back yet... 😅 Might wanna just go ahead and pick them...
I planted daikon to help break up our heavy clay soil. The soil is so bad we ended up with pinky size radishes. I'll be chopping and dropping daikon and cover crops multiple times to try and get usable soil in a year or two.
Interested in this sand pear…. Is this a hard fruit? Where to obtain a tree of this sort without growing from seed?
