Yup, 40 year gardener here and that’s how I feel about my weeds. Green gold. I use all of your techniques and even grow a weed garden where I allow certain weeds to grow and then I mulch them with grass and leaf mold and compost. They are absolutely stunning and in flowering stage, the insects love them as do I. I tell people the birds planted the garden while the plant devas tend to them and I water and mulch around them.

I remember learning that weeds are full of nutrients and my first thought was how do I get to use that to my advantage in the garden? Then I learned about compost tea. I’ve actually made gallons of it, but never used because of fear of killing my plants. So, David the Good just answered my question…to dilute or not dilute! I’ll begin experimenting with both! Thanks, David!

I let one single weed take over my entire backyard this year in Arizona. I just removed it this week. It was a ground cover weed at least 25ft across. It started growing when I drained my pond water into my fire pit. It grew ferociously for 5 months, growing up the walls and onto my porch! I wanted to push that weed to an extreme that I didn’t know was possible. Thousands of little flowers. And it became a feeding ground for dozens of little birds. Of course it couldn’t have been possible without God’s generous supply of rain water this summer !

KEY TIP: If you call or stop by your local lumber company, they may just have giant FREE tarps that come covering their lumber deliveries. They are not always in perfect condition, but they are AMAZING for heating up your compost piles (or your freshly mulched beds) that will force any weed seeds to germinate fast. Leave the tarp on longer than that, and you will cook them. Ta Da, seed free mulch! Use the black (or darkest color possible) side up to produce the most heat. You can also cut these traps to the exact size of your raised beds and reuse them every Winter. Just clear and mulch your beds in the Fall, tarp them for the Winter, and by Spring you can just remove your tarps and start planting ! The more prep you do in the Fall, the less rushing around you have to do in the Early Spring. Happy gardening!

I like to use a modified version of #5. I'll call it the "Pull and drop." You pull the weeds up so you get the roots out of the ground and then you drop 'em to slowly add back to the soil.

Just be sure not to put too many weeds in an enclosed worm bin, it can lead to over heating as well as dead worms. I so much prefer giving my worms an escape path, they always come back when the temps are more ideal for them since the bin (feeding station) is full of worm food. And while they are gone they are checking out the closest garden.

If I have no crops immediately where the weeds are coming up then I let the weeds get up to about 3-4 inches high so I get a nice green mulch on top of my soil. If I have existing crops I then keep weeds below 1 inch high. The only sad thing is over time as I never ever let the weeds seed there becomes less and less weeds to mulch with .😩😩

Thanks for the great video, Mr. the Good! I'm in zone 9B here in central FL and I'm slowly growing my food forest. Thanks for all the great info in your books. I've pre-ordered the new one. I appreciate your research and sharing of info about how to grow in my beautiful home state.

@@andreathenotsoterrible2939 I only had 2 grow. 1 just dropped off the vine, while small. The other one is growing right now. I haven't seen any critters yet. But I'm not quitting... going to try Seminole pumpkin this fall. Best of luck with your garden!

I watch your videos in down time and in sure I havent but I feel like now I'm caught up on all I need yo know on what applies for gardening in my climate. At this point I'm just watching for entertainment. One thing I do not understand is if bananas do not have seeds and can no longer be produced that way and only by the pups then how do they end up in ditches and random places on the side of he road

Yeah, my seedy weeds go into the DFSW. Same with scutch grass (cue horror scream). I want a worm bin, but I am a little weary of bringing stuff in to the house during the winter. Need to figure that out, first.

This was such an excellent video! Love the idea of getting to know your weeds and use them! So many amazing ideas here. Gratitude to you for taking the time to make these amazing videos! We are so stoked to get planting. Gonna start our seedlings soon. Green house will be going up too, so hopefully once they start to sprout up, we can take them out to the green house. Big love from Missouri. - Erin + Brian

Chop and drop question: do more weeds come up from the roots? If so do you just continue to chop and drop?
