      @@K4lr0b have you considered the benefits of being more well rounded? The video explains this with the discussion on transferable skills. Many of us in college/university don't see the value at first. Years later in the work force you will see the adaptability come into play. That's when you realize the benefit.
      The main thing I learned growing up and working in the blue collar sector while studying (twice) for the white collar is the division that exists. You see that hugely now with the anti-science BS. I don't treat people without degrees as idiots. I respect everyone. I can learn from anyone! One side bar: many trade degrees are in fields that can't be outsourced. Being a mechanic, an HVAC technician, plumber, electrician, etc. None of these roles can be outsourced since they have to be on-site. Ditto for many construction based trade degrees. Well done Brandon. Despite being a university graduate myself, I concur that trade schools can be a fantastic alternative. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is in many ways superior to many of the "low tier" university degrees like humanities, liberal arts, and so forth. Trade schools are also very practically focused. This was something that was a deficiency for me when I graduated from university with an electrical engineering degree. I was shocked by how ill-prepared I was for the necessities of working in a corporation. Honestly, most of the skills I leveraged when entering the workforce were those that were self taught.

    Most trade schools in Australia are 4 years for your apprenticeship. Wages are low but assured by the government. We have TAFE = Technical & Further Education college. After 4 years the student is qualified as a Tradesperson or in Business. I started here in Accounting & then moved to university. But there are so many industries including hairdressers / technicians, advanced education. Most of these people pay a few thousand dollars a year, helped by employers / government.

    Would a Mathematics degree be considered superior?

    • @GabeMcCarthy182
      @GabeMcCarthy182 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A mathematics degree is a far more broad qualification. With this you open up so many opportunities, but aren't funneled into a specific career path. A trade school is amazing for the specific given career, however fairly useless for anything else. I would always recommend the more broad option (the mathematics degree). Targeting a specific career is risky as you may not actually enjoy it. I was an apprentice electrician for 2 years and didn't enjoy it and am now studying a maths and economics degree. Ultimately you have to follow your own passions but the flexibility of a good degree shouldn't be underestimated.

      I have a Mathematics degree and it hasn't really gotten me anywhere. I don't like being a teacher (I tried). I've been applying to entry-level data analyst positions with no luck. I even have online certifications and personal projects to showcase my skills. It's seriously frustrating. I'm seriously considering a trade (such as being an electrician). Also, I've worked in an office setting and it can get seriously boring.

    Trades make much more than 50k. Especially if you're willing to travel. 80k for most entry level jobs in welding, electrical, diesel, fitting etc. Some of my HS friends were earning over 100k withing 3 years of graduation. Lots of hours, and manageable work physically. Many people working desk jobs aren't shining examples of good health physically or mentally, so there's that too

    I come from a blue collar family but went formal education after the military. I’d like to add that it is true that trades are not typically outsourced. But professionals that are good don’t get outsourced either.
    One thing about trades is there are an influx of immigrants securing these jobs and unionizing. They are essentially circling their wagons and taking care of each other. Which is fine they’re free to do that. Typically though immigrants avoid formal education because they lack the education to compete.
    So, keep in mind that you may have the skills for the job. But employers and clients are hiring labor that is cheaper. Professionals generally do not have this problem.
