This is the 1st video that has actually given me a quick straight answer I was in need of. Use 1/2 inch trowel for 16 inch and larger tiles. Thank You. The HD floor guys in the store near me are mostly not trained to answer anything but the most basic questions.

I’m going to be tiling for the first time tomorrow the tiles I purchased are 12” x 24” I’ll be using the 1/2” trowel and I will also back butter the tile but should I lift each tile up completely to see how the coverage is? I only need to lay (8) tiles it’s my floor in front of my fireplace thanks

You don't need to pick up every one but definitely pick up the first one and any that you feel might not be well covered.
