I was crazy about Johnny Winter after hearing Johnny Winter And, Live! I saw him in concert several times. I went alone to one of his concerts at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium (now Georgia State University Alumnae center) and planned to purchase a ticket at the ticket window. After waiting for a long time I stepped up to the window only to be told that they had just sold out. Crestfallen, I walked up to the glass entrance doors and stood on my tip-toes to see anything I could. I could see Johnny on stage and could hear the music well. A security guard noticed me and after a while he came up and cracked the door open, asking, "What's your name?" I said, "Bobby" and he said, "My name's Bobby too, come on in, Bobby!" I couldn't believe it! I walked straight down the center aisle to the front of the stage and stood up on a chair that was in the aisle. I was right in front of Johnny Winter and he kept looking at me as he was playing his amazing stuff. It was as if he recognized what a fan I was and that fans like me were the reason for his success. At any rate, we definitely had a connection. I've saw him numerous times in those days, including the Fox Theater, The Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and the famous, Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom where you could stand right in front of the stage. I read where he is rated as the 60th something guitar player. That is disgusting. He is easily in the top five, right behind BB King who has been rated as being in the top three.

@@kbarchives8826 Sounds great, thanks in advance! What I really like is that you obviously carefully chose your uploads - the rare stuff, and avoid the usual Johnny Winter stuff - Beat Club, Rockpalast, session with Dr John - there are already tons of those uploads on YT, Vimeo, Dailymotion, russian sites, everywhere. So yeah, keep the rare stuff a comin!

"Are you supposed to be playing this music?"
    What an ignorant question!

They met in my hometown, Beaumont, Texas, at The Raven, which is just a memory. The Big Bopper and George Jones are also from Beaumont, and just down the road is Port Arthur, where Janis Joplin is from.

In his autobiography BB tells of their first meeting in Beaumont . He said some white boys in suits came in and two were “Extra white”. 😁 (Edgar and Johnny) What they don’t say here is that after begging BB to let him sit in, King did. Winter played It’s My Own Fault to a standing ovation. BB congratulated him and told him he’d see him again. 10 years later they played the Fillmore together.

What a class act for BB to speak so highly of Johnny in the face of this racist ass interviewer. She knew exactly zero about blues music but wanted to act like it belongs to her even though Johnny Winter devoted his whole life to it. Johnny knew how to answer that ignorant ass question by basically saying he never thought about it in terms of race. Two respectful legends praising each other. RIP to them both.
