Having seen multiple reviews of the tents, it's great to finally see a side-by-side review. Having the sleeping pad in the tent gives a great visual. Good job and thanks for helping us make a decision about which one to put on our bucket lists...
I initially bought the 1 Pro, then the 2 Pro. I was fully intending to sell one of them, but part of me wants to just keep both! I’m not rich by any means, but they’re both that good!
I have the 1P and the 2P (neither being the Pro). For the little bit the 2P increase in foot print it turns out to be a problem where a backpack. Having shrubbery in one vestibule is not uncommon. So I tend to bring my 1P.
Great review! Thanks so much. Just wanted to be clear that the weight difference between the two is 19.6 vs. 16.4. So for an additional 3.2 oz you get the 2 person version. That’s not a lot of weight for a lot more room in my opinion. Thanks again
Excellent comparison! I actually didn’t realize the only difference between the two is the width. I agree with you that the 1P is probably what I would use most of the time. I have the 2P (v1) and the 1P wasn’t out yet. I don’t think it was even talked about at that time. I think I would have picked the 1P over the two just because of how I backpack. That being said I do love my 2P and I don’t think it is too big for me at all. But the 1P would have been my pick. If I could only go back in time. PS I was impressed with your acrobatics. I would have broke a hip. 👍
I own the X Mid 2p. I'm 6"3 so I love the space but I saw a reply by Durston that said he may be offering mix and match fly/inner in the future. If that happens I'm getting a 1P Pro fly with a seperate mesh interior to better protect against condensation and bugs in this humid south, save weight and have more site options. My pick between these 2 would probably still be the 2P pro since there's less likely I'll be getting condensation all over my stuff (I can't help but bump into tent walls being as tall and lanky as I am)
I have to XMid 2P (non-pro) I love it. My only complaint is the footprint is kind of big for some of places I go. But, it has room for me and my dog so it's worth it. I recently picked up the TarpTent Rainbow so I have something with a smaller foot print for solo trips.
Thinking back to all the camp sites i picked during my this year' trips in Sawtooths and Eastern Oregon, none would have accommodated 2p version, but 1p worked well
This is the head to head comparison that should have been done awhile ago. Thanks for doing this one! Although, im still just as undecided as i was before, lol. I have the sil-poly 2p and my wife and dog now have the 1p sil-poly because my 2p was "wayyy to big for her and the dog!" I love both of our x-mids equally. I like way to much extra room but i like cutting weight when there is planty of room. Im really wanting an x-mid pro. Im thinking i will eventually have both and maybe even the 2p plus pro thats coming soon. I will most likely buy the 1p pro first as it will suit me well and price is definitely cheaper. Lets not forget the weight savings. Then the 2p pro and eventually the 2p plus pro. Yes, i have a problem. I might be addicted to x-mids and cant get over this addiction. To be honest, im not even trying.
You sleep in 2p alone, and your wife and dog sleep in the 1p together.....??? At that combined weight you would have 4.3 pounds to play with for a tent to house all three of you.
I have the X-mid 1P. With respect to interior room, I don't want a large space for my extra gear. I want little gear in my sleeping space. If my gear is wet or dirty, I don't want it touching my quilt or pad. The X-mid 1 has ample space for my extra gear on one side vestibule and it still leaves me an entire side vestibule for entry or even cooking in bad weather.
For me, it's the X-Mid 2. I often backpack with my partner, and when I backpack alone, at least the weight for the tent isn't too heavy while still being double walled. And when we car camp, we have the extra poles so we can day hike with our trekking poles. It's the most versatile, most lightweight that I'm willing to go.
Just bought the X-Mid Pro 2 Plus, because of the room. I do trail work for several days at a time, and need a place for all of my stuff inside the tent, and the X-Mid 1 (or most other 1 person tents) doesn't have the room for all my stuff, especially if I need to keep wet work clothes away from my sleep system. I suspect it would be the same story if you are the kind of backpacker that hikes into an area, then day hikes out to explore for a few days. Great review, helps make an informed decision.
Definitely will get the 2p even when solo camping. The extra space for stuff or a dog is great and the difference of the weight between either is negligible.
I have the Pro I used it on a thru of the Tahoe Rim Trail last month. Easy to set up, excellent pace inside and you can set it up on a variety of surfaces fairly easily. I've had a few other trekking pole tents that are very poplar and this on checks the most boxes for me.
Thank you!!!! You've helped me to decide on the one person.... I'm short and have a really small sleeping pad, so I think that the one person will work for me! Looks like there is space not to hit my feet on the end and get my sleeping quilt all wet from condensation.
Great comparison. I'd get the two person because cost, pack size and weight are negligible. Plus the extra gear I'd need to keep dry and safe wouldn't fit into the X1. This would be for an ADV motorcycle setup.
We have been keeping this in mind and the X-Mid Pro 1 has the smallest footprint of any tent we've released. It's still a spacious tent and not a tiny footprint, but we are keeping the size in mind.
I don’t have the pro but I love my regular x-mid 2p. The footprint is pretty big but I’ve never not found a spot for it. It’s so roomy and luxurious, I hate feeling claustrophobic so I’ll take the weight penalty to have more space! On the rare occasion my wife wants to come along too it’s also great for the 2 of us!
Neither. Went with the Pro 2+. Probably because it ticks every box. 2 big pads. Extra length. Still one of the lightest options out there for one person to carry. Remains to be seen about the size of camp spots. I can’t realistically afford getting two really pricey tents so 2+ it is. It’s due in the post literally tomorrow so pretty excited.
You've sold it for me, 2 person is the way to go. Although I won't be trying the forward rolls anytime soon, not at my age! Thanks for the great video.
I’d still go for to 2p. I only own 2p tents (Nemo Dagger, Lanshan 2 pro and Blackdiamond Hilight) because for one I like to have enough space to put my entire gear inside in case of downpour and also to have the opportunity to have enough room for a second person if necessary. Currently typing this message while I’m in my Dagger @ the Baltic See in 10-12 Beaufort. I brought a beer crate to hold my tent down though. Could be worse
I have a X mid Pro 2 for solo backpacking. I want the space inside the tent. I'll carry the extra weight to have the ability to spread out my gear and to not feel like I'm bumping up against the walls constantly.
So nice to hear a review of a large tent without it being described as a palace. Such an overused term, and, as GOT taught me, the proper term for a truly palace-like tent is a pavilion.
I think the #1 reason to get the 1P is that it fits more tent sites thanks to the 17” narrower fly footprint. The weight savings would be a strong #2. Thanks for the side by side comparison!
I've used the X-Mid 2 (not Pro) version a couple of times and love it. It's a squeeze for 2 people but nice and roomy for one. Plus it's double walled, which is nice. Got the X-Mid Pro 1 as well, but haven't gotten to try it out yet.
I have the silpoly version of the X-Mid 1 and LOVE it! I really want the pro, but I just can’t get over it being single walled. With me being 6’4”, I feel like either my head or feet would l brush up against the wall, but I’m probably just overthinking it. Lol Great comparison!
Me not being a tall person, 5’9”, it’s harder for me to relate. That said, I feel like Dan can be trusted when he says the length is good for someone up to 6’8”. I bet you’d be just fine.
The X-Mid Pro 1 is quite a bit longer inside than the regular X-Mid 1 because you have space right out to the fly wall. The X-Mid Pro 1 fly is almost as long as the regular version fly (98" vs 100") so if you lay in your X-Mid 1 WITHOUT the inner and imagine it being 1" shorter at each end, that's how long the X-Mid Pro 1 is.
@@durstongear Yeah, I’m sure my single wall paranoia is just me overthinking. Lol I’m going to pick me up a Pro someday for sure. I appreciate your input, Dan! Loving my Kakwa 40 pack too btw! 🤙🏼
@@durstongearThis kind of info would be beneficial to have on your marketing, to help people know and understand de little but important details (IMO) :-)
Thanks for a thorough review Devin! I'm looking to get the Durston X-Mid 2 (Not Pro) for myself and Rugged Mountain Mister when we do Father/Son trips. I think its even a little bigger by like... 2" on the floor width. REALLY looking forward to the weight savings, the extra room, the two doors and the 2 vestibules. My only 2 person tent right now is a Trekker 2.2! No extra room, no vestibule and the pole is RIGHT in the middle of the door! Can't wait!
Love my regular 2P. It is 2 inches wider inside and an absolute palace! My wife and I have had both us and our dog in mine. Great tent. Takes up some serious real estate, but oh, so worth it! You're going to absolutely love it!
I loved the interior space demonstration, that trully showed the livability of the tent, but man, it was disturbing to see you stomping those sleeping pads. :)) I was so anxious. I know, they are fine, i guess, but it kicked in the babysitting of the gear feeling in my head. :)) Jokes aside, i don't usually coment on videos, but this was a great video that answered so many question. Thank you!
My sons and I use both backpacking. Both are great but if I had to purchase again I would go with (2) 2p and pass on the 1p. Because of the design, stability is compromised in the 1p because the poles are not offset as much as the 2p.
I went with the 1p one because the 2p has sold out 😂 but I don't regret my decision the 1p is great and as I don't like sharing a tent more than what I need
Great video, maybe the best ever. I have the 2P and I’m usually by myself. Most of my trips is one night trip with some hiking. For that I can take the weight penalty. For longer hiking in both distance and days I would probably get myself the 1P as well. Well well so many choices😅
Would you expect the 1P to be a little bit better in wind? I think this might benefits because of the smaller surface area (assuming you put it with the narrow and facing the prevailing wind). I believe that both tents have the same number of anchor (stake) points.
Great video with really good ideas. Unfortunately I think I'm even more indecisive now, lol. I want that space but I want less weight. I need to find someone with the 1P so I can rule it out.
I think you could, if you put the pack at your feet. I've also seen people take a small piece of cord and tie their pack to the strap of the trekking pole if you want your pack to not be on the ground.

Get the 2P Pro, the extra space is well worth the tiny weight penalty.
Thank you, glad it was helpful.
Yes exactly my thought’s!
@dougieranger Great advice...thanks.
Where were you yesterday when I was trying to figure this out.
Funny thing I went with the 1p!!
I also love that rei helix pad. It is my new go to.
By far the best design of a tent in the world. Durston is truly some kind of a genius.
Very debatable indeed
I got the 2P Pro and it’s absolutely worth the tiny extra weight penalty, especially if you live and hike in a temperate climate.
I now expect to see summersault testing in all future tent videos. 😂
Noted!
I just got the 2 pro. Tried many one person tents and you can not beat the extra space and having all of your gear inside in a clean space.
I initially bought the 1 Pro, then the 2 Pro. I was fully intending to sell one of them, but part of me wants to just keep both! I’m not rich by any means, but they’re both that good!

I agree about the weight and I think condensation would be less of an issue in the X-Mid 2 pro tent with only 1 person using it versus the X-Mid 1 pro
@@michaelbutler4961 that’s a good point, more air volume would ostensibly hold more water.
