Ted there is a motor company in Florida that have 1,000s of OEM ECM motors rebuilt for all HVAC brands that are priced at about $325.00 with a 1 year warranty. They also sell just the modules that are rebuilt as well with a 1 Year warranty for about $169.00. They ship out very fast as well. I have purchased several ECM Motors and just ECM modules as well and have had great success. I will updated this post a little later today when i get back into my office. Cheers man. Peace

RJParker I don’t think they are selling them based on manufacturer model number they just go by the generic GE numbers and that doesn’t mean it will be the same motor at all as what failed. And are they unpotting all the silicone in the module to repair?
All these variable speed motors cost big bucks so to get you to pay a bit more money for a more energy efficient unit using them the manufacturer gives you a 10 year warranty on the motor! So after 10 years it will fail and now you are supposed to get a new unit because of the cost of replacing that motor on a now over 10 year old unit! Talk about planned obsolescence! there's a universal replacement now for new units with ecm, it takes the firm-wear from the main board. the main benefit of variable speed is automatically getting the correct cfm across a large static pressure range and maintaining it as conditions change like filter getting dirty, balancing dampers being adjusted. for those who want lower repair costs, can get a unit with an x13 and retain the energy efficiency.
It's somewhat better comfort, with the fan only running at high speed when really needed. Sell that to the customer, but let them know the ECM will go bad eventually. More service $ down the road.
@@johnhaller5851 the customer doesn't have a choice for furnaces - all required to come with ecm motor. a question of whether to go for the cheaper constant torque or the more expensive constant airflow/variable speed version. In general high end equipment is much more for comfort than energy savings. I'm a fan of 2-stage/constant torque furnaces - so much better than single, yes, a bit more to fix but repair costs aren't as astronomical as the high end units with variable speed.
My Lennox is still under warranty, it is just under 5 years old. The guy came out and spent a few minutes in our attic with me and said he would order a new motor. I don't think the motor is bad.
Great video Ted. Its great to see that there are still some good seasoned techs out there that do troubleshoot those modules on those Lennox ECM Motors. That system doesnt look to be too old considering it being a three stage heat two stage cooling. Great Job!!!!
I have had 3, yes three failures on my blower.. The coil windings inside the actual motor shorted out every time! (bent one straight and it burnt up somewhere else in a year) Replaced with a new motor and same issue happened.. On my 3rd motor with a spare ready now lol.. Wish I had that handy tester you made there for the ECM! That is cleaver!
I might be doing this same repair quite soon. My issue is that everything works but every day or two now, the thermostat will kick on and nothing will happen. The outside unit will come on, but the blower motor won't come on inside. If I take off the panel and decompress the door switch for a little bit, along with turning off the thermostat, everything will work again once reconnected. I have power going to the connectors for the ECM and the motor windings are within ohm spec from what I saw. I'm just getting tired of having to reset it every couple of days (or sooner). Hopefully this will be my fix as well! Any additional input is always greatly appreciated if there is something that I'm overlooking and might help me. Thank you for this informative video!
The variable speed blowers in Lennox furnaces and alot, if not all, of air handlers comes factory set to slowly ramp up to 100% operation. Takes 7.5 minutes to reach full speed. This greatly increases dehumidification.
Also Ted with the Lennox training I have had was informed all Lennox air handlers come set up as a straight cool only. You need to cut the blue jumper between the R terminal and the W2 terminal
Good repair ! Replace the part that is bad, not an entire assembly (motor and the electronics). It's amazing how the public is taken advantage of due to circuit boards and their cheap quality. It happens to cars and all kinds of things like microwave ovens, stoves, ovens, washing machines etc etc. CHEAP crap circuit boards while most of the mechanical stuff just continues to live and run and run.
We have a 2003 Heat Controller downflow furnace. We had it serviced and the Tech said we should replace it. I asked why and he said the new furnaces are 96+% efficient and have an ECM Blower. Our Furnace is 92% efficient and has never had a failure except for blower motor bearings failed. After seeing these videos we are not sure why we need to replace our reliable furnace?
@@Jon-hx7pe It has dual stainless steel heat exchangers. We have carbon monoxide monitor's in house in case they fail and contaminate living area. Furnace still looks like new in and out.
@@scotta9114 Many techs are likely commissioned. 10 to 15 years and it's out there door when there are 25 year old furnaces running safely and reliably. It's such a shame - a lot of good equipment gets scrapped and homeowners ripped off.
Even though it was a quick fix for the motor/module, I'd have pulled the cage out and cleaned it. And if that black residue is actually mold, I'd have taken the whole blower unit out and disinfected it before I put it back in. Also handy to wear your jumper wire like an HVAC Tech necklace.
lennox cbx27uh blower motor works fine on cold setting yet it does not work with heat or manual fan , what is in control ? is it a separate controller or is the same as the module on the back of the blower motor ? controller on the back of the blower motor was replaced not long ago with a manufactured unit . thank you

Hey Ted. Great videos. Lets me know what other equipment is out there and the problems and fixes. 99.9% of what i see is nat. gas. Have you ever attempted to repair the motor controller on a dc drive motor. I've seen other vids repairing thei rush capacitor on the 2.5 regal/beloit motors but mine has a burnt link on the backside of the motor controller board between the negative on the c10 and the red wire connected to the board. I was just going to solder a small piece of wire in there and test it but i thought i would see if you have ever attempted a repair like this
I ordered the exact motor and module used and when i hooked it up it only runs fast for 10 seconds and then runs medium speed which is not enough to push air..does anyone know why
Cost is $300 for module for these ECM disasters. You might save 300-500 over 15 years depends on kwh$, runtime, no one saves anything with these because they fail 3-10 years if lucky. Now since 2019 govt mandated these in all blowers, hopefully they fixed them to last like a PSC but I doubt it. In some cases with high SP they use same kwh anyway vs PSC which last 20-30 years.
Ecm are bad, bad, bad. At least this one was repaired with module only. Last year I had to replace my entire ECM condenser fan motor because The module was not separate from the motor. It was one-piece. That part cost me $900. Yikes!

@@publicmail2 high static pressure kills them. maybe contractors need to stop putting oversized units on undersized ducts. any product is junk if misapplied. hopefully the newer ones protect themselves better.

Do you have power surges in your area? Have you checked your incoming voltage to ensure it’s correct and tried a quality surge protector on the unit?

I heard variable speed motors don't last long. They did not say you could replace the module by it self. I love this guy. No homo.
High Static pressure in the hvac system is the #1 reason why the electronics fail
Fix the ductwork and they last their normal life span, 12-15 yrs
The cost of that motor is half the price of the air handler at the company I used to work for. Nice save!

On that Lennox model it uses the y terminal calling to ramp the motor to higher speed. Just a heads up for you

that motor must have a switch mode power supply inside of it
techs need to start testing static pressures, if you have high static it kills ecm motors. Poor duct design or not enough return ...
