Been subscribed for years but this is the first time TH-cam recommended your vid and I'm glad they did. Glad it's not just me that got sick of Gopro reliability. Try to make something good, something creative and then get back to the computer and find the Gopro has f...ked everything up. Been using Insta cameras for well over a year, no sponsorship, no affiliate links. I just really like reliability. Glad big channels like yourself highligh the poor service and reliability of Gopro. They are definitely not having any more of my cash.
When you plugged in the other mic in the beach I was like wtf all the wind noise disappeared. But yeah Insta360 is a lot better at listening to their customers, so much that the fpv drone users get their own version specific to their use. GoPro is getting by on reputation besides good color but unreliable; I don’t use my all that often but I’ve had bad luck with files getting corrupted.
This is why I come back to Jake’s videos time and time again. Jake doesn’t bullshit and tells it like it is. He’s a genuine dude and I respect his opinion & experience. Great stuff dude - cheers!
*_This is awesome, Jake! Thanks for sharing this. I can't believe it's been a decade and probably my first comment. I'm going to try one out. The biggest thing I hate about the GoPro 10 is it never seems to charge right from the camera. I hope someday I can also grow my channel and do this for a living. I think you have quite a bit more time invested._*
I like using the Zoom F2 audio recorder in my helmet and for mountain biking. Although it is expensive and you have to sync in post, the 32 bit float format is great when you want the microphone really close to your mouth without terrible clipping and distortion when you talk loud over the wind, shout with excitement, or the classic Jake woooooo
I too have a zoom set up. It’s not bad if you make videos from time to time. But when you make videos as often as I do it becomes a pain. Also any trip with days of recordings is a nightmare later. I’m looking at 50 or more video files, that’s 🥴. I’ll take direct audio in even if it’s not quite as good.
@@TheGardenSnake totally agree with the hastle, i've recently found that running a standard audio out line from the zoom ( H1N for me) directly to the media mod line in works great, zoom audio captured directly to the clip with no need to sync post. cheers from LA ✌✌
Damn it. The mic adapter update was the last straw. Now I'm gonna have to switch my setup. Sadly, they never got back to me but if it actually works I don't mind just paying for it.
I've never had a Gopro go wrong (had the OG Hero's, Hero 5, still using a 7), so can't comment on their support. But this does look like a great alternative to consider when I need another or a replacement.
I've been thinking about buying the One R a while ago but instead put money towards my professional photography kit. I do e-commerce full length model photography as a side/weekend hustle. I'll probably buy the One RS after I get a new lens for my Canon EOS R. I can use the One RS for a 360 cam to film the behind the scenes of my photoshoots. I'll make sure to use your affiliate link. I can also start filming my weekend rides since I have a 2017 FZ-07. I bought one because of your review of it. I don't regret it one bit, the bike is freaking fun to ride around Orlando.
Dude I left my monitors on when I clicked.. the sound is very good! bassy but not overly even in wind (eq?). Plus GoPro owes Ricky Powell a trillion dollars imo lol
How is the image stabilization on the Insta360 1RS? I've always had GoPros & the stabilization on the Hero7 upwards is still a selling point for me. I would jump to another brand if it had the same image quality & image stability... because I have also had many problems with various GoPros & agree that their 'support' is lacking.
Nicely done and I get what you’re saying. I’ve been thinking about getting a Insta360 camera. Just don’t want to get the camera and not have time to figure it out (software, etc). My time management has been bad. I find myself with less and less time to edit my GoPro & drone footage . Would hate to get it and it just sit there.
Looking into the insta360. helpful thanks. gopro has been going downhill for years and years. i just want something that works. cant tell you how many hours of footage i have lost from gopro over the years from corrupted files, bad software updates, or the user experience being so poor i turned the recorder off when i thought i was turning it on, etc. why cant these action cams be simple and designed for better use. I wish all of them had better tactile functionality. such as larger switches etc so you can feel what you are doing since these are often mounted in places that are not visible from your own eyes.
It is good that they seem to have fixed the audio on it, I used my One X2 the other week and the audio was terrible, had to boost it 800% just to be heard which destroyed the sound quality. I have the One R as well, and really wanted to like it, but it had huge gaps between files when recording long videos. I'd heard that that has been improved on, but is it a seamless gap not like GoPro has between longer video files where it splits them up? I still think GoPro has the edge on video quality and settings, but it is brill that Insta360 are chasing them hard and offering a better solution regarding the audio now. I currently use the Hero 10 with the old microphone adaptor, I hate the Media Mod so this was my only option, I love it TBH, have had no issues with it and the new white batteries are great for stamina in hot and cold.... but at the rate Insta360 are improving things, I could be tempted to switch over to them for a helmet camera as well as the third person 360 cameras I currently have if my Hero 10 breaks.
If you don’t run an external mic with the Inst 360 the audio is trash if trying to use it for riding clips. The gopro 360s ability to use the sound from the mic with the least wind noise actually works really well. But now that you can run an external mic on these, it’s worth another look. Out of the box stock though, no extras, the Gopro 360 is still way better.
Yep. I’ve had a bunch of different generations and models of GoPros and they all have overheated and shutoff. Soooo frustrating when I’m rafting or kayaking.
@@TheGardenSnake I’ve had 5 of the models get hot and shutdown while on the water multiple times. Hero8 black, hero9 black, hero7 black, session 5, session 4
I've been having an issue with my GoPro where it will freeze the device up after about 2 minutes of recording and makes me pull the battery to get it working again. I can't tell if it's a GoPro issue or an SD card issue, but it's pissing me off that I can't properly create videos!
Man thank you for this info. My question is, Can i take the SD card and put it in my computer to edit with Vegas? Or do i have to use the insta editing program?
Well one I’d always suggest moving files off the sd card and on to your hard drive. The only thing you have to use the insta360 software for is the 360 footage. There is a plug in for premier pro but the work flow isn’t great.
@@TheGardenSnake yeah I didn’t mind using their program for the 1X and then moving that to Vegas to add. Not sure I’m ready to try premier. I tried it once and about punched my computer. Vegas Movie Studio is dumb enough i can use it. I meant easy enough. But good info, I’m sure it will work the same. Thanks for the info. I will definitely get one for my wife for Christmas 🤣
I just use a tascam and purple panda mic. Wipe the gopro audio immediately and overlay the tascam. Pretty simple, just make sure you do it before editing or cutting footage out.
I truly enjoy the insta360 line up. I personally use the Go2 to film my high performance RC car shenanigans. Clip it on my hat and I always get the good shots. And it's so very simple to use that even a doofus like myself can easily operate it.
I’ve been keeping my eye on these cameras and have been watching you long enough to know that you’re not in it to push affiliate links. You actually using the cameras for as long as you have says a lot about your views on them.
Jake I’ve got the 360 one RS and it fell off the bike while riding a wheelie. Scratched the hell out of the lenses and I didn’t have the protectors on. Have you had to replace yours? A new 360 mod is $269. 😬
Awesome review mate, and I will always value people who use a product fully otherwise they're just talking about the specs. It's the usability that really matters and you have a live with it to properly explore that. Curious if you find it better than the GoPro Max, this is what I use. Haha, "Gravel?!" and immediately turns into a 10-year-old;-P I would do the same. I feel, personally, that the Media Mod is the right step for GoPro. The constant updates in the Insta are a good point though, something to consider.
Love the video and I want to buy the camera but you have a link for 2 cameras. Was one mounted to your helmet and the 360 mounted off the pole? Im confused as to which camera was actually used, or both?
As a newer motovlogger that just bought this camera for their first one, I have put out a few videos. But I recorded a video recently where the camera corrupted the file. About 30min of fun footage that I can no longer get back. I also have been experiencing some freezing issues and in turn the camera gets extremely hot. Have you had any of these issues or talked with insta360 about possible bad eggs with the oneRS? I don't expect you to see this but I've been following you through the years and appreciate a genuine review that isn't put out before the product is even released.
That sticks. Maybe you got a bad one. Have you updated the software? Is the SD card a good one? Properly formatted? I’ve had mine in the North Texas humid heat and the desert. Never saw it over heat and I run constant power in. That leads me to think you got an ify one. Have you asked insta360?
My biggest issue with the Insta's is that you still have a 30 second gap between video files. I film for several hours at a time and it makes syncing up my footage impossible.
I feel like GoPro peaked at around the 4, and it's been all downhill since. I mean they're still good compared to some of the low-cost Chinese GoPro alternatives, but given how much GoPro charges you for their cameras there are definitely better options out there.
Modularity alone would be enough to sell me on this camera. Shit breaks and to be able to swap just one piece out instead of the whole camera is great.
Brand loyalty has always been odd to me. Like your paying for this stuff, you should get what’s best. I can see in some cases supporting a lesser product because you want to see the brand grow and be better. But I definitely don’t feel that way with GoPro.
Had one GoPro Hero3 with a bunch of accessories back in the day. It died. Bought new batteries, reset it, tried everything to get it to work, still didn't work. Will never buy another GoPro again
Appreciate the advise. I’ve been wanting to buy a GoPro but the cost has put it on the back burner. Instacam was like $269.99 on Amazon? that’s worth taking a stab
I think my next "main" camera with be this one tbh. Also very fed up of GoPro. I have the hero 7 black and it's made almost all of my videos with me. But the newer ones just....don't do it for me especially as I'd still have to keep using an external recorder cus those mic adapters are literal shit. My one X2 has literally never had an issue. So now that I can get an actual mic adapter with the form factor etc is the way to go really. I had high hopes for the new DJI but the form factor is just too awkward to mount to a helmet on the chin like I want to. But yeah. GoPro kinda suck. They should really just release one every 3 years or so and get it right from the off. This comment is too long. And you're one of the few people I'd actually trust on here when you make videos like this, come to NC when I move and let's go for spiiiiins :)
Wow - you just answered a question about 360 filming. Thanks. GoPro is financially rough, in addition to their so-so cameras so that might be why support is poor. I, personally, use SJCAMs on my motorcycle and 4-wheel - the A10 waterproof bodycams - one on the side of my helmet, another on my chest, then two more buried in front and rear light clusters. The Cops here in VietNam are always after bribes and about 95% of the drivers learned how drive on bicycles, which is why they have so many accidents.
I have to disagree with the GoPro support though. They have always been amazing for me, always available, and every phone call or chat has got to a resolution. Every single time. I had two Hero 7's fail in the field recently, I put them through hell, and they replaced both of them with Hero 9's. Everyone of course has their own experience, but fo me, GoPro Support is one of the best I've every experienced.
100% opposite of what I’ve experienced and seen with others. For the most part they do not respond and if they do it’s some auto response with no follow up. I have several open tickets that never got resolved. But how about make not break in the first place. Most everything I film is not just repeatable.
@@TheGardenSnakeI can totally understand your perspective as well, failures in the field just shouldn't happen. I have had to follow them up on open tickets sometimes, but for me, that's typical for any company these days. It's hard to find support staff at the moment.
Hundreds of hours of corrupt files, randomly freezing, randomly shutting off, no customer support, and just the Starbucks-drinking-IPhone-using-GoPro-Snobs in groups and forums have totally turned me off. I'll film with a potato before I buy another GoPro.
I mean it looks cool in certain features, but try to go trail riding with this sucker and how is it going to stay still and still give you the 360? A few whoops will knock it right off
So it looks like basically start buying all the add on's you can for the 360 R since they want to force us R owners to buy an RS. Example: Insta360 USB-C to 3.5mm Mic adaptor = you can't has Please tell me how this isnt like GoPro corp bs 'buy more' attitude?
I’ve had to do warranty claims through GoPro for swollen batteries and they do even like replacing those. They’ll deny the claim initially, but they honor after enough bitching.
100% agree on GoPro, they innovated the action came space no doubt, but start at the 6 or 7 they have just stopped giving a shit, they phone it in and just pump out garbage products. I work in a video production space on professional recording/streaming encoders and starting with the heroic they have a huge bug that can damage the HDMI input of many devices and they don't care to fix it. LG even had to put warnings on TVs that connecting a heroic would void the warranty. F$&k GoPro! Insta360 I have been keeping an eye on for years and they are absolutely crushing it right now! They are the innovation company now.
I'll admit, i dont watch *every* video, and sometimes it takes me days to see your posts of those i do watch. But ive been watching your channel for years. That said, I know you are not a "sellout" like that. I know you're up front about products and that you use what you 'sell'. So im sure most people who watch your channel know this as well. That said, I've never liked the idea of GoPro's. I still have a Drift-S for my helmet cam. Ive seen many channels praise them, but then also see a couple (you, and Chase specifically) having issues fucking with them, especially the audio, having to tape all this garbage to your helmet to make it work, and i think even in chase's videos he has had issues where the connection is loose and the audio would sometimes cutout. And the way you had to mount it to the helm just seemed massively bulky, which is why i never switched to it from my Drift, despite the drifts problems. This i may give a look at though. So thanks.
always the same, i saw so many, SO MANY youtubers making a video ditching GoPros, but whem you continue to see the videos they make over the time they STILL USE GOPRO as they main cameras... obviosuly they use the Insta but only for 360 stuff... every main footage are still made with GoPros, and thats stupid... making a video "stop buying gopros, buy this instead" and then in every other video still using gopros as main... i don't believe on any of you regarding this specific matter... i'm sorry...
But… I’m only using insta360 cameras in all my videos. And it’s been like that for over two years now. Just until now I had to record the audio separately. Now it’s all on the one rs. But hey I run the 360 cam in almost every video and you can see my main helmet cam is an instant360 cam in all my videos. Go look for yourself.
@@TheGardenSnake thanks for replying Jake, I believe you, probably after your comment, you are the only youtuber I've seen that keeps their word... not that using another brands is bad, but I don't really like the "do not buy this" titles... because it feels biased... anyways... Trouble with GoPro... they have the market of small action cameras, so ubiquitous they are like Kleenex, it's no longer a facial tissue, it's a Kleenex. People don't call them action cameras, they call them GoPros.
your whole spiel about gopro not caring about you... neither does insta360. they're both businesses; they're both trying to make as much money as possible. the only difference between them is that insta360 is the under dog, so they have to be better in certain ways in order to pull more business away from gopro.
I have to say I agree don’t buy GoPro but also BS on your insta 360 - my one R sucks..... I lose footage like a GoPro and Insta360 support in less than helpful. Nothing beats my Sony fdr-x3000. I paid for my insta360 one r, maybe if I got it free I could live with it.
Love my insta360 x2
That’s true
Very cool Camera, The only thing I don't care for is that some of the footage has that not real effect.
I just wish it looked more like the video I made. You’re seeing the TH-cam compression video. Not much I can do on that.
Maybe I missed it, but how do they hold up in the rain?
Fine but I do pop the mic adapter off and close the door.
There was some distortion in the video is that a characteristic of a 360 camera or can that be edited out?
You can change that in editing. I setting it pretty fish eyed to get a lot kn the shot.
Me over here still got the GoPro hero4 black lol
The hero 4 was amazing. Last good GoPro. Hold onto it as long as you can. Mine broke in a crash.
Thx for honest review
Hundreds of hours of corrupt files, randomly freezing, randomly shutting off, no customer support, and just the Starbucks-drinking-IPhone-using-GoPro-Snobs in groups and forums have totally turned me off. I'll film with a potato before I buy another GoPro.
😂 yeah man I feel that
I mean it looks cool in certain features, but try to go trail riding with this sucker and how is it going to stay still and still give you the 360? A few whoops will knock it right off
I trail ride with these cameras all the time. Just go look through my videos.
The lens distortion is the deal killer for me. Makes the shot look really ugly.
orientate the camera vertically that way when the pole flexes the camera does not see the pole.
pixelating like crazy at 4:42
Every GoPro I've had suddenly died on me and stopped turning on. Next time I'm buying something else, maybe this 360 camera!
I moved from GoPro to Insta360 in 2019 and never looked back.
So it looks like basically start buying all the add on's you can for the 360 R since they want to force us R owners to buy an RS.
Example: Insta360 USB-C to 3.5mm Mic adaptor = you can't has
Please tell me how this isnt like GoPro corp bs 'buy more' attitude?
Integrity for the win!
I’ve had to do warranty claims through GoPro for swollen batteries and they do even like replacing those. They’ll deny the claim initially, but they honor after enough bitching.
Great review
Buying this one next .
You won’t be disappointed
@@TheGardenSnake the setup you use doesn’t come off when riding?
Are you asking if wind or something knocks the camera off or anything else? If so then no.
I've listened to Jake with Kove, and with Raycon, and T-Rex Racing... please stop making me spend money, Jake!
Sorry
So thanks.
Jake... jake... jake... Jake.....JAAAAAKKKKEEEE.....that is all.
That be me
@@TheGardenSnake Man, thanks for the response. You've been one of my go to youtubers for going on 1o years now!!!
Nice just to have one camera
always the same, i saw so many, SO MANY youtubers making a video ditching GoPros, but whem you continue to see the videos they make over the time they STILL USE GOPRO as they main cameras... obviosuly they use the Insta but only for 360 stuff... every main footage are still made with GoPros, and thats stupid... making a video "stop buying gopros, buy this instead" and then in every other video still using gopros as main... i don't believe on any of you regarding this specific matter... i'm sorry...
@@TheGardenSnake thanks for replying Jake, I believe you, probably after your comment, you are the only youtuber I've seen that keeps their word... not that using another brands is bad, but I don't really like the "do not buy this" titles... because it feels biased... anyways... I'm not trying to criticize only sharing my point of view, you always can do what you think best
But look at how shitty the plastic lens flares in sunlight on your video .... it’s a great camera for Instagram, but horrible for vlogging
Well that’s my honest experience.
@@TheGardenSnake me too
Say GoPro one more time
Banana
What a horrible mic.
Jakethetruthsnake. Appreciate the honesty man.
