      That's because the voice in the hall is not thrilling at all. And looking at this I see and hear why. He's completely wrong for this role. He sounds like he's singing Nemorino. Nothing remotely heroic in this voice.

    I like Michael Spyres a lot and have left a lot of laudatory comments on his videos, but he is a tenore di grazia, not a tenore robusto and should not venture into such heavy roles as Polione. Fortunately, he adapts the role to his voice more than his voice to the role, although I find his tone more opaque than usual here, which is what may make some reviewers call it "baritonal" in some of the other posts... Hmmm, Mr. Spyres, come back to your previous roles to ensure a great longevity to your gorgeous instrument.

    Well sung. Beautiful. But using the term baritenor seems to be a gimmick.

    • @aaronmckone8973

      It absolutely is a gimmick the way he uses it.. I find his programming of baritone arias because he is a baritenor to be inappropriate for his voice and nowhere close to what a good baritone could do with that rep.
      I will say this much though: I actually like his approach in this much more than I usually do. I think his voice is on the lighter side for this role, but I find that when he sings lighter tenor rep, he essentially croons too much, and when he tries to imitate a baritone, he overdarkens and sings with ingolata, but this is actually much more balanced in general than most of what he does, in my opinion. I think he would be best to stick to Rossini, Donizetti, Mozart, and other baritenor, leggiero, and light lyric rep with THIS voice. It’s not too dramatic. It’s really not even dramatic at all. It’s just a little more pharyngeal space and more energized singing. Just make it a little less marcato and it would be totally appropriate for Nemorino, Almaviva, etc.

    as the French say: il beugle ... a vulgar imitation of the Grand Corelli ... the cabaletta is a mess : voice is unclear, lower notes are shallow, high (?) notes have a tremolo etc ... sorry but shouting not even a b flat is not singing Bellini

    Beautiful singing (except for bad choices in the last seconds)--but what terrible acting (by both singers)! Why does Michael not register a single emotion or reaction to the words he is singing? Is his always this inert? This is one of the great tenor moments of the entire canon and he is expressionless.

    He's a good singer though extremely mechanical in delivery. Having studied Roman history for some 55 years, I can say with some authority that centurions in the Roman legions didn't look like this. Maybe a clown in the Circus Maximus. What a travesty opera has become since Del Monaco shook the house in this role.

      The makeup and physical movement are hallmarks of a Robert Wilson production, which never goes for realism any more than Van Gogh in painting or Moore in sculpture or Picasso in just about anything. But representational accuracy is not a good benchmark for artistic validity. If it were, opera itself would be pointless: the characters should be speaking, not singing.

    I agree very much with S. Varzi below. First, it’s not completely clear what his voice type even is. I agree with those who think a natural baritone with a strong falsetto who might have trained as a countertenor. He opted for the middle ground with predictable results. In strange repertoire he can sing (or insert) very unpleasant super-acuti and appear remarkable. In standard repertoire technical problems become more evident, in particular the tendency to become ‘ingolata’ on the normal tenor’s money notes, B flat to C, and so lose volume. Add to that singing anything and everything, most absurdly Enee (just listen to the C in ‘Inutiles regrets’ - he is shredding the voice). And to me the real killer. The voice has no character, no striking basic timbre and no ability to create any variation in the blandness. S. Varzi is absolutely correct about this. I’ll add one picky thing, that he gets the words wrong in the repetition of the cabaletta, which indeed did not require that dying chicken high Q. And a last comment on the dreadful Wilson production. He’s been doing that Kabuki thing for a long time now, and Ben Heppner has said that being constrained by artificial postures in Wilson’s ‘Lohengrin’ began the vocal problems that ended his career prematurely.

      Al B.'s music It’s just the way you spell the name Aeneas in French. The opera is ‘Les Troyens’ of Berlioz.

      @Lady Izolde He's a bergonzi and corelli fan .he just goes round calling "vicious" anybody who criticizes one of his favs ,and posting "deep" thoughts about anyone who can sing low but also has the high notes CB hadn't and the very high notes FC hadn't , a better pronunciation and diction ,and can sing a more technically demanding rep than both .He has the classification syndrome too ,if he can't past a fach label on somebody it freaks him out

    • @wewper
      @wewper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or maybe what ended his career prematurely was singing Lohengrin, period. And if the postures gave him vocal problems, did he still not realize this eight years later when he returned to the Met in the same production? Or is he just looking back now to scapegoat just about anyone for his wrongheaded repertoire choices? After all, he made a whole career out of cracking on Tristan.
